Bons filmes!

The dancing scene (which will eventually become cinema's very first freeze frame ), begins at around the 46:03 mark; the freeze frame itself occurs at the 46:21 mark.

Yes, except it isn't really a freeze frame, but an edit (splice) which cuts from video of the dancing couples to a framed photograph of the scene. The idea is similar, though.

The director later said this was the least favorite of all his films!

+Hailey Shannon Certainly it's much better than "The Pleasure Garden" or "Downhill" (a.k.a. "When a Boy Leaves Home"). Probably better than "The Ring" and "Easy Virtue" too. Could think of a few talkies I'd put below it also.

I think the men and women in the 20s where far better than the 30s. Better looking better style.

why the weird omissions? for example i'm pretty sure at 1:01:18, there were sheep in the film.

It is in my opinion that this is the worst Alfred Hitchcock film he made between 1925 and 1928 inclusive. The plot is rubbish and the acting is not much better. I also found that a lot of the scenes are utterly meaningless. Not once did I express any concern for any of the characters. Why was this film ever made? I shall keep watching each of Hitchcock's films in chronological sequence. I started with The Pleasure Garden. The Manxman is next.

I just looked this film up after watching an interview with him while promoting Family Plot, his last film. He was asked if he could obliterate one of his films from history, which one would it be. He said Champaigne. He said filming was completely improvised. Without any script. I'm sure its terrible, but interesting that a film maker so taut in process and pre production, who claims that he has no creative exploration during filming-that it'd all been put on paper, would be haunted by this film. Perhaps this terrible experience made him afraid and in turn brilliant.
