There were few times my mum let me stay home from school poorly and this was one of them… I watched this on my little portable TV and I’ve never forgotten it… oh, and guess who my FAVOURITE director of ALL TIME is? I have all of his films on DVD, (watch ‘Frenzy)’, and I didn’t realise when I watched this as a poorly child that it was the magnificent Hitchcock! The Master (with a capital M)… he might’ve Directed a film called that, too!☺️

Some will be disappointed because they expect a Hitchcock flick, accompanied with a pretense for Hitchcock style.
I say let them, because I loved the story and especially the music.
The blue Danube is arguably one of Strauss Jr's best pieces, and the emotion evoked from the scene with him conducting (if you know anything about his father's real-life contempt for his son's choices) bring the tension of the situation boiling over the top!!!
I thought Sr. was going to storm the stage and tackle him! Hahaha!
I have my own biases as a lover of classical music, so I can relate to Hitchcock lovers possibly being disappointed, but this is a GOOD movie. I don't care if Hitchcock himself "hated" it.

A viennese pastry of fun, frolic & romance.
Hitchcock fans fully appreciate his brilliant flare for comedy, with which he deftly relieved the exquisite tension of many suspense thrillers. Few may realize he ever turned out a light-hearted rom com like this.
Although from relatively early in his career (1934) this was a classy little production. The cast is excellent, and photographed with much of the penetrating glamour later lavished on stars like Cary Grant & Grace Kelly. Dotted with incidental performances of the well-loved Strauss repertoire, the music & singing are surprisingly good: well above the norm for movie musicals of the period. And, albeit in black & white, its glossy art direction foreshadows, on a smaller scale, the striking visuals of his later films.

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" with Robert Montgomery and Carol Lombard was another light Hitchcock comedy. A favorite of mine.

Interesting to see a Hitchcock "non-thriller." While this falls short of his other work, it is revolutionary for the way that music was incorporated into the highly fictionalized account.

it was one of his first "talkies" just a bit before works like secret agent, the 39 steps, sabotage, and jamaica inn

It doesn't fall short of anything except your mindless insistence on comparing apples to peanuts.

„One of bis first talkies“ is a bit of a stretch. He did at least 7 talkies before this one. There are directors who don‘t direct seven films in their entire career.

I don’t see why this is considered his worst/one of his worst. It’s definitely not great, and in the lower section of his work, but it’s much better than most of his earlier ones, apart from the (few) mysteries he did early on (where it was evident he excelled). Some of his earlier and silent comedies and romances were even cringey in some places, or otherwise uncomfortable to watch. I agree, it’s not among his best though. I believe Hitchcock didn’t view this as his worst, but as his second or so to worst. He apparently said champagne was his worst. I personally disliked The Farmer’s Wife, The Ring, and The Manxman more.

I thought Under Capricorn was a decent one, and better than others (Torn Curtain, for instance). However, the true Hitchcock touch probably didn’t work as well with period films.
I partly agree about the 39 Steps, although I think he was there or almost there with The Man Who Knew Too Much, from the year before.

Not only that, but the movie was so corny it lost any credibility.

Not for me. MTF voices too shrill to take.
