    Extremely consice, well written and animated.
    A bit much probably for new players but you can always go back to it as a reference.
    Solid 10/10

      Thanks! Yeah, this is definitely more intermediate-expert level detail, but hopefully will be helpful to everyone eventually.

    Super thorough, I appreciate it. I think I could benefit from another one that covers like… the most common, simple, turn without the sub phases that don’t happen as much.. or maybe like… 3 examples of turns in a row… one very basic without optional actions… one with more complex actions.. and one with the most complex actions and responses.
    But, I’m still a beginner. And this is helpful. I’m gonna watch like 4 more times. Thank you!

    Great explanation. I am a complete NOOB with only a handful of games and this video answered a lot of questions and doubts I had about timing. Thanks. Subscribed and liked.

    This is perfect when set at .75 playback speed. Good stuff!

    what a wonderful video.
    all magic players should master these sequence of events for magic.

    This was a wonderful but I have two suggestions. 1) you mentioned how exactly you move to another phase really only once which is during the end step. It would be great if you either reiterated or started by saying the stack needs to be empty. 2) to my knowledge first strike damahe and normal combat damage are different steps with the first strike step only being created if a first/double strike creature is put into combat before it would occur. If this is true the video kind of skips that.

      @StrataGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You're correct, I missed the fact that first/double strike adds an additional combat damage step. There's always more to talk about!

    You said that in the declare blockers step the attacking player chose what order the attacking creatures will deal damage to the stacked blockers but then in the next step you also said they chose that order again. This is confusing.

    • @StrataGames
      @StrataGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I maybe should have explained it better:
      During Declare Blockers step, the attacking player chooses the ORDER in which they plan to deal damage to creatures.
      During the Combat Damage step, the attacking player chooses how to deal damage; in the example shown, the ember beast deals 1 damage to Thieves' Guild Enforcer and 2 to Lurrus. However, the attacking player could have chosen for Ember beast to deal more than 1 damage to the Enforcer. It could have dealt 1, 2, or all 3 of its damage to the Enforcer. This is relevant for cards that benefit from excess damage being dealt to a creature, or if you want to refrain from killing a specific creature during combat for whatever reason.
      This is what I meant to convey.

    If there are no upkeep triggers for the active player, do other players still have priority before draw step?

  • @trevor228

    Im told i can interact at the end of an oppents begining phase even of no ability triggers have hit the stack yet, (lets say board has only basic lands). However every magic game online ive played does not allow this. Opponent's always draw and play a land before i can interact with instants etc.( as long as no triggers have hit the stack) Im so confused...pls clarify

    • @StrataGames
      @StrataGames  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, you can interact using instants and abilities in the upkeep, which happens before their draw for the turn. This comes up rather infrequently, so in order to do it, you have to place a "stop" in they're upkeep, by clicking on the phase in Arena or right clicking on the upkeep phase and pressing "create a stop" in MTG Online

    Question after declaring attackers, you mentioned both players can cast instants before the next step. If I am attacking, I declare blockers. Do I then pass priority or do I still hold cast my stuff then pass it over?

    • @StrataGames
      @StrataGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The attacking player has priority first after both attackers are declared and blockers are declared. If that player passes, all other players gain priority in order. And if no one does anything, you proceed to the next step

    How many creatures can be assigned as blockers to an attacking creature under normal standards? Is it only one, or can you assign more than one? Thanks

    • @StrataGames
      @StrataGames  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Under normal conditions, any number of creatures can block a single attacking creature

    So when is the right time to Vial-in Jadar, opponent 2nd main phase? Or is there priority before end phase?

    • @StrataGames
      @StrataGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each player gains priority in the end step. This would generally be the last opportunity to tap any permanents you want to untap during your next turn. Jadar only triggers on your end step, but if the permanent you're vialing in would trigger on your opponent's end step, yes, you'd want to do it during their 2nd main phase.

    I'm new to mtg. So if a card says "cannot be targeted THIS turn" it does not mean both my and my opponent's turn only 1 person's turn?

    • @StrataGames
      @StrataGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct. Each turn is controlled by a single player. Effects that say "this turn" or "until end of turn" will stop once a new player starts their turn.

    I have a question
    In the cleanup step when the creatures are healing. Which creatures heal? Your creatures? All creatures? The creatures of your opponent?
    Also happy new year to everyone

    • @StrataGames
      @StrataGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damage wears off of ALL creatures simultaneously during cleanup

    Im trying to get into this game but man, is it seriously this complicated? Its very deterring. I understand the complexity of the cards create infinite possibilities but there has to be an easy basis to follow in order to just be able to play. I feel like i gotta put 100 hours in just to understand the phases and 'stack' I dont want to play until im ready to play, seemingly like a vicious cycle for me.😮

    • @StrataGames
      @StrataGames  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't be discouraged! This is a very high-level overview of the combat phase. All you really need to know is:
      1. Declare attackers
      2. Declare blockers
      3. Combat damage
      Most everything else in the videos is corner cases and extreme examples. Just remember that you and your opponents have a chance to cast spells before each of these steps.

    Comprehensive video... but WAY too fast + too concise.
    I had to watch at 0.5 speed... and still had to rewind about 40 times!
