Exactly who Genesis were - just three blokes enjoying each other's company, writing, playing and performing together! (and goofing off with each other as well!) :o)
It's really cool watching how these songs that we now know really well develop and seeing and hearing the different stages they went to in (kinda) real time.
Though the official title of the album is Genesis, Tony, Mike and Phil themselves sometimes refer to it as the Mama album in interviews, perhaps because the song "Mama" was the most memorable track for them. In any case, I agree that it's a cool video.
How cool would it be if they did something like this for one of the earlier albums - anything from Nursery Cryme through Wind & Wuthering. It would be awesome to see them working through those much more complex song structures. This is still great though!
Black Cap Baron there are a few on TH-cam during the Selling England sessions. No visual however, just audio. Just type rare Genesis and you’ll find a few. There is also a series of early versions of pre 1975 songs you can hear as well. They are all titled “...tion”. Stagnation was one of them...
Interesting bit of equipment trivia: Mike was apparently using the ARP Avatar guitar synthesiser at the time. He used the Roland GR 500 previously and I think Daryl Stuermer used an Avatar then.
Compression (intro) live by someone on the guitar (Mike Rutherford’s composition) or Don’t Let Her Steal your heart (intro) live (Phil Collins composition). Really Nice! ✌️
Ladies and Gentlemen, as of the last week of March 2013, Part 1 through Part 5 of these videos will officially be 30 years old! Happy 30th Anniversary, Mama album! Too bad I was only 3 years old when this was released.
I'm sure a lot of people assume that Phil came up with the beat for "Mama" given his experience with drums and drum-machines....but it was actually Mike that was the brain-child.
Ah the old Pearl DLX Concert tom kit should of bought it when I had the chance customized with Gretsch fittings the owner was using the bass drum as a coffee table...lol
This video is great for more than just the "behind-the-scenes" aspect. First off, Phil, Mike, and Tony didn't have a "look". They didn't dress like rock stars. Sweaters, T-shirts, and Rugby shirts! Just normal blokes! Second, what's for lunch? Not steak and lobster washed down with Cristal. Nope. Just a good ol' sandwich! Man. Not only were they awesome talents, they seemed like genuinely cool dudes who loved making music. You think Jay-Z or Kanye would eat a sandwich? No way. Spoiled brats.

It was filmed in Surrey UK at the Farm Studios circa 1982 I think for the eponymously titled 1983 release from Genesis. By far from their best works albeit apart from Mama and Home by the Sea!
It sounds like Silver Rainbow or even Second Home By The Sea over the drum track for Mama. To my ear it also sounds a lot like some of the keyboard parts on Peter Gabriel's 'Games Without Frontiers'.
It was home movie filmed by Phil ( mainly) during recording sessions for the self titled Genesis album from 1983 and was filmed at the farm Surrey which was Genesis own recording studio which they’d acquired, I think, a year or two before.
Ya see, that's where you guys went wrong, substituting a drum machine for Phil's organic drums. That's where things went to shit. Pop shit. Yeah, you did SOME good stuff.
of course there would have to be the usual comments of this album is not good,so tired of hearing this bullshit christ it did not end after 1975 or 1977
Phil "Squiggy" Collins definitely has "diarrhea of the mouth". He's the ultimate jabber jaws and he had to get on Mike and Tony's nerves. No wonder why all 3 of his wives have left him. All I can say is it is a good thing Mike and Tony are on the quite side or the three of them wouldn't be able to communicate.
This is pure gold.

Wow, thanks for posting this. Amazing to see it come together. Also makes me sad that they can't do it again.

Self-titled albums pretty much always get a nickname, it's way too confusing otherwise.

Incredible. This is pure You Tube gold. Thanks for uploading!

What a wonderful insight- early home video, priceless. Thx ;)
So cool to see them working up home by the sea!! Great footage!
@9:56 It's so interesting to hear the early stages of their hit song Island in The Sun!
Superb. Thanks for adding. I'm always fascinated to see how songs come together.
5:20 - a seminal moment, the start of Mama being composed.

this is way to cool!
glad he went for VHS over beta.
I agree!! Phil knows his technology :P
This is hilarious! Are you going to upload the rest? I'm dying to see it!
Lol people who think Genesis was phil’s project just need to watch this. It’s so much improv and collab.

At 11:39 Phil Collins is as darling as I've ever hoped to see......
Phil is so proud of his new VHS. No,no, it's NOT beta.
Fantastic to feel the band camaraderie
Love this. Those guys are fun, I'll take all the BTS I can get.
I like how they start writing "Island in the sun" by weezer at 10:09
NO, its a popular chord progression, you will find it in lots of songs
No gimmicks ... just pure talent
Amazing .Thank you.

Genesis Day 1... haha good one!
THIS IS GREAT!!!!!!
Well, of course Moot is a member of the tribe. ❤️
Wish there was more footage of Phil playing his Pearl kit, Didn’t stay with them too long (unfortunately)
the mama drum beat didn't sound like that in the final version. it was ran through an amplifier to get that powerful sound
Yes definately home by the sea. I you get the Box set you can watch the complete movie with all the creation of the songs.
Great stuff here, man.

I like how you can see the thing (Like HBTS) take form.
The newspaper headline at 3:08 dates this as Monday 7th March 1983, the day after the German election.
