This track was probably the most inspirational song to me that led me to become a rock keyboardist. UnEarthly sounds from Tony Banks. Little did I know just that one Synclavier keyboard was worth as much as our house. The technology in his rig wasn't available to the masses for many decades. Now largely lives in my laptop of synths.
I would have paid good money to sit in the corner just to watch these guys. I enjoy watching the process, unfortunately I am not a musician but knew many young bands growing up that let me sing because I knew the lyrics to most songs. This was in the mid seventies. Then I met and married a sound guy for my bosses band. We are both enormous Genesis and their individual works fans. I was 11 or 12 when I found them. I must admit I can't remember all of the early Genesis lyrics as they were deep stories that I loved being mesmerized by.
Not a musician also, i discovered Genesis when i was like 18, a little more than 10 years ago, and i can recite the entirety of The Battle of Epping Forest out of memory because i'm a bit nuts.
This was their magnum opus along with the epic “Second Home By The Sea.” Most definitely their greatest work ever recorded. I’ve melted away every single time of my countless listening since the album’s debut. The surreal segue between the two songs is unparalleled in rock music history.🥰

Ah, the Mateus Rosé. Ruffino if you were feeling posh. Happy daze. The full Vari-lite rig right down for pt.1 then rising up for the creshendo in pt.2. Still raises the hairs.Bravo!
Usually the person that wrote the lyrics to the song (Mike or Tony) would sing it to Phil to give him an idea on how it would go. And most of the melody is taken from what Phil would sing during the jam.
Its a self recorded documentary made by Phil, owned by Genesis recently, never officially released yet it was available on youtube, all i did was paste together the parts of the documentary where they are making "Home by the Sea" while also cutting out some excess dialogue and jokes... though i think this one is the less affected by my cuts.
Absolutely brilliant video into the lives of our prog rock heroes in their recording studio from the 80s, building my favourite track/s on the album 1St & 2nd Home 🏡 By The Sea, absolute genius, of course not forgetting that it takes a brilliant team to produce equally brilliant track's, from the manager to the sound engineer at the multitrack mixing desk, many many hours of the guys practicing & recording their masterpieces , team work at it's finest period.👌
What a treat this is! Even watching this i still don't know how they put a song together with all the different elements and making it interesting, so amazing. If there's anything better than watching Phil play the drums it's watching him play his jumper drums 😂 he's so cool and funny. Did feel sorry for him there right at the end, " i was only asking" 😢😄 Love it

@@SteveJones172pilot Interesting point. There are certainly segments of songs that all three of them just said, “This is IT!!”. But there are probably more where it wasn’t unanimous and that one version won out over another. Or the segment immediately before or after that WOW portion had to be changed to something not quite as good. Plus, what we are hearing likely hasn’t been polished. Any of those riffs that HAD been incorporated would have certainly have ended up sounding much, much better than what we heard. Part of my work is to help Japanese researchers that can speak decent English in writing the English version of their articles for scientific journals. Ah this must've been the winter of 1982. Or so. We were awaiting the next Genesis album; Abacab was so big around here. I still remember when I heard the 'first song' of this new Lp. It was the opening notes of "Mama" on the radio. I thought to myself, "what the hell is this?!". That was my first impression. I went on to really like the album though.
This song has the most unique sounding reverb on Phil’s vocals-like a reverb with a delay and then another reverb on the delayed vocals! I’ve never heard it on any other song and when Nick Davis remixed the song in the 2000’s, he didn’t even try to replicate it. Too bad the video didn’t go into how they created this effect.
This just popped into my head because I was listening to Strawbs earlier . . . Can you imagine Dave Cousins singing this song? I think it'd be interesting to hear. Regarding Tony's voice, yeah, he's great. It's a shame he didn't develop the courage to sing lead like Steve Hackett did. Yes, he did sing lead on some of his solo works, but not nearly as much as Steve. And Steve has gotten better in more recent years. Give At The Edge Of Light a listen.
