- When Abiy Ahmed unexpectedly became Ethiopia’s prime minister in April 2018, he rapidly unleashed a wave of liberal political and economic reforms and shocked the world by making peace with longtime foe Eritrea. This earned him international adoration that culminated in the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.
Just a year later, however, Africa’s second largest state descended into a horrific civil war that left hundreds of thousands dead and tarnished Abiy’s reformist image. Though his regime nearly collapsed during the war, Abiy ultimately emerged victorious and now rules over a country that is at once internally unstable and regionally ambitious.
The Economist’s Africa correspondent, Tom Gardner, joins Hudson Research Fellow James Barnett to discuss Gardner’s new book, The Abiy Project: God, Power and War in the New Ethiopia, and Ethiopia’s future in the volatile and strategically vital Red Sea region.
For some reason, these institut always talk to ethnic violence when it comes to Ethiopia. It's political, not ethnical. Anyways this interview is a waste of time
this is there long year Programm to destroy ethiopan nation as he said, Yugoslavia. Its not about talking about ethiopian culture. its geopolitics.
Tigrayans were targeted because of their ethinicity only!
Its ethnic
Tom Gardner has made an astonishing effort not to study the subject matter, preferring to dabble in free-style psychoanalysis of Abiy Ahmed. Pop journalism at its worst.
can you show us ur side of study,

Yes, thanks for asking. Just google "GETTING ETHIOPIA DEAD WRONG", and perhaps "Substack Rasmus Sonderriis".
Tom hasn't even scratched the surface about this sick leader.
Hahaha as Uhuru Kenyatta once said about western journalists, this guy will be saying “I’m such and such from Nairobi, Kenya”
This whole discussion is about Abiy and lacks a whole lot of detail what led up to now. This was all along TPLF’s plan if it’s not them no leader will lead the country.
You look very worked up judging by your repeatative comments. You must be sick and an imbecile like Abiy to defend him after all that
Yet hes teamed up with them to massacre amhara
Thank you!!!
Do you know any theology or what a Pentecostal movement is or what prosperity gospel is. The thin line Tom Gardner uses to connect all of this, when it is very clear he understand none of them. Grasping at its straws!
Ethiopia is a civilization state that has evolved over the centuries.
Interesting insight. For a son who followed Ethiopian politics since TPLF was a rebel fighter, I think you captured most of what is going on currently. What was the last thing that sparked the war in Tigray? You omitted that. I old like to know what you think was the final draw
Ethiopia was constituted into an ethnic state following the London conference on what the British call the Lancaster template. Melese and lencho took the cue from Britain. The the ethnic structure was imposed on EPRDF for two main reasons the Lancaster template: make sure that marxit ideology is weakened and the Ethiopian state remains in western camp.
“the eye has to see beautiful things, to create beautiful things “ that Tom quoted Abiy said in 2019. Tom thinks it has prosperity gospel roots. I think partly right. My observation is that quote and Abiy’s obsessive projects are inspired by Singapore and its charismatic leaders. Looking forward to reading the book in print.
Rubbish talk. Packed with lies and hypotheses.
Liberal economic reforms are not holy, they are not necessarily good. It depends.
"...to use force to reclaim territories that they said Tigray had illegally annexed from them"...
Northern Gondar and parts of ancient Angot (Raya) were annexed by TPLF and added to Tigray in 1995. Why are you denying this?
You can blabber to justify Amhara's genocidal adventures. You can't. And you'll pay dearly for murdering and cleansing Tigrayans.
@@mulugetakide964 Go look at the definition of blabber. Nobody was justifying anything. I only stated a fact. I get you have animosity against Amharas but I grew up taught to respect others. And don't threaten random strangers online by saying "you'll pay dearly". Like who does that???
@@amdetsion3256 Alluding 'forced annexation' in the context of ethnic cleansing is not justifying? You say who does that? People were uprooted from their livelihoods by savages; people who were wronged by those whom they saw as countrymen.
@@mulugetakide964 Try to calm down. No need to desperately make-up your own context over a fact in order to spew hatred. So when the Amharas of Welkait in the 1980's were massacred and uprooted by the TPLF that was fine? The difference between me and you is I don't support tribalism, ethnic cleansing nor condone violence. Instead of referring to a whole ethnic group as "savages" like you did, acknowledge TPLF leaders lasted through terror and debauchery, and heaped decades of vendetta from those suffering onto their blind supporters.
@@amdetsion3256 Amharas living in Welkait, according to surveys during the Derge were around 5%. And there is no evidence that the TPLF massacred these Amharas. None! In fact, the stupid TPLF allowed Amhara expansionist narrative for all these years, which culminated in Tigray Genocide. And I am clear as to whom I call savages: those who maimed and cleansed a million people and people like you who are defending these atrocities.
Advice to the journalists and international observers: please stop calling it “Tigrayans” did this and that, please use “TPLF” . In the same way you use “Abiy” not “Ethiopians”, and “Putin” not “Russians” to what happened in Ukraine. Since “TPLF” has chock hold of the “Tigrayans” life at home & abroad. A small ask but a giant leap in objective analysis.
Tom Gardner nailed it. Those complaining in the comments are people who want him to parrot the Amhara unitarian narration and blame the Tigrayans for everything under the sky.
Ethiopia has witnessed much more conflict and suffering under centralized dictatorship of Abiy in those short 5 years than in the previous 30 years of national federation.
ADI5 is that the discount code ?
Scavengers of Abiy at work in the comments here!
Why don’t you mind your North American issues that needs critical attention due to the war in Europe, the inflation and political instability and let Ethiopians find their own solutions however the figure it.
🧐
Waste of time. Just TPLF talking
This is all TPLF talking points from Pro TPLF corrupt journalist.
💯
Observing what Abiy the maniac is doing we Ethiopians would like to apologize to TPLF. TPLF era were the golden years of Ethiopia.
@@Archfs go to Tigray Tplf is there you can enjoy your golden years. Don’t ever think of bring that that misery to the rest of Ethiopia though . Abiy in his worst days is better than ethnic intoxicated gang Tplf
@@abenezersalemu6146 eshi balegeze!
This conversation is extremely biased against Abiy. 50min plus conversation and not a single mention of how corrupt and distractive Tplf has been to Ethiopia and are the main cause of the war. This is ridiculous, clearly you guys have an agenda ur pushing.
Abiy oromo expansionist dreams are thr problem
@@shafsteryellow clearly it’s not even an issue if they are biased can they at least be open about it? plus, can’t you see the discussion they were having and what he thinks of Ethiopia’s future? They are anti-Ethiopia, they think so little of us, the way they talk about us like we are some ant colony they need to study🤦♂️
Who are displaced? 😂👈 The Amhara! You ignore the genocide, rape, looting and apartheid on the Amhara. Tomy, don't waste your time, we already know what you can say and write.

Clowns 😂
It is very funny and sad at the same time how a lot of people claim to have knowledge and even go as far as writing a book without even getting 50% of the facts right. It is this kind of misleading journalism that I have brought not only Africa, but then Taiwan to the knees, for those that want to control it is very threatening to see the past, pays gross from Africa, without the hand of a white man. Therefore any African leader that brought girls to his country, and his people is called different names and labels that will fit the narrative. I was a white man.
WHT are you always negative on Ethiopia! Stop using words like tumultuous! Stay out of our country!
