      A lot of these videos aren't directly related to what I need to do to my car, or even something I'm likely to need to know in the long run, but he makes everything so interesting and engaging and fun, I just can't stop watching! I feel like I'm passively becoming a master mechanic from all of the tips that took him a lifetime to accumulate.

      +lahbl Wipers will always make a sound when dry. Even a squeegee will do that. His point still stands, worn out wipers will leave streak marks because they are worn in certain areas, also loud.

      +Hector Cortez , i noticed that many black "rubber" wiper blades have a graphit powder coating on it. Wipe one brand new with your fingers and you will see. I guess if this coating goes of the wiper will not slide so nicely on the glass surface and you will have that strange noise when they are dry.

    • @Plur307

      +bunsoft2 I've tried graphite blades a few times and I don't notice any improved lifespan.

    Right! 13 years ago, I bought a pair of silicon wiper blades for my '98 Toyota Camry. 110,000 miles later they are still working great! Every time I wash the windows I use the squeegee scrubber to clean the blades too. Then I wipe them dry with a paper towel.

      Nice. By his logic he would change his baldes every 6 months. This is so unrealistic, ive had two different cars for over a year, bought them used so god knows how long they havent been changed. One worked fine until i sold it, other still butter smooth. I guess ill consider it if i ever have to change them

    Scotty, you're right about the silicone blades. I bought a set of triple edge brand blades and installed them on my 2002 dodge truck when I bought it new. They're still on there doing just fine. I also installed some of the same kind on my other cars at the same time and they too are still on there and no problems. Silicone blades are the way to go. I will be cleaning them tomorrow.

    Silicone wipers are the bees-knees! Much like yourself, I live in Texas and that hot summer sun beats the heck out them. Buying quality silicone will actually save you up to about $100's in the long run. I will usually side on the "buy once, cry once" philosophy but thee wipers really aren't that much!Thanks Scotty. • @sheldonm3535
      @sheldonm3535 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Francis G yup and since I’m in NY meaning cold as crap! I run the orange rain X washer fluid. Find them on sale and buy early. Once it snows they are all gone. They contain more alcohol so they clean super well and doesn’t freeze like the cheap blue stuff at gas stations.

    • @fixedgearforlife
      @fixedgearforlife 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      QuickCarCare, driving on the interstate highway I don't even use my wipers with all the RainX I buff onto my windshield. At that speed all the water beads off. The only time I have to use the wipers is when I'm driving thru urban areas at slower speeds.

    • @sheldonm3535
      @sheldonm3535 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      fixedgearforlife yea the aerosol Rain X is really good too. I use that and also Rain X washer fluid. The orange stuff. The blue stuff freezes for me as I live in NY. The rain X aerosol also doesn’t require buffing. It also makes ice and snow stick less.

      It may be because, it really doesn't do any more than just washing them with the soap and water while washing the car; or it may be because they believe the alcohol will dry out the rubber; it may be because they are too lazy to do it and would just buy new ones. It's not as likely that thumbs-down from the people here means "you suck" as much as it means "I wouldn't recommend or agree with that".

    • @zeffur7
      @zeffur7 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Lou Fazio
      Agreed. I also thought the recommendation was unnecessary & possibly harmful to the blade material.
      I just wash my blades with soap & a sponge--clean wipers work great with good windshield washer fluid. Silicone wipers do in fact last longer, however they are much more expensive. It would be interesting to compare standard wiper life to silicone wiper life to see if the $ & hassle is worth it--for many people--I doubt the extra cost for silicone wipers makes any difference to them.

    • @louf7178
      @louf7178 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +zeffur7 Yep. I've tried it. It doesn't recover the edge. Haven't tried the silicone ones for the same reason. I've been finding refills for $2...just gonna go that. FYI, I've noticed that RainX seems to break them down. Not doing the windshield where the wiper rests seems to help. -Then I think, boy, do I need a life? But hey, I hate crappy wipers, and I'm not ignorant (for the most part, lol). Have a good one.

    Another good video Scott never really thought to bother going out of my way to clean my wipers but I guess it makes sense! The point about it stopping them making that irritating sound when they get old all dirty is probably the best one!
    I think for most people the bog standard ones are so cheap (about £10 each) you dont really bother thinking about maintaining them. But when you consider you have managed to get 6 years out of one set it is quite cost efficient.
    I think I usually get about a year and a half out of a set if I am lucky! Cant believe the auto store was so honest to you about the situation but guess that is how business works!

    Way back sometime in the 1980s, I got a pair of Bosch silicone blades. They were terrible. I went back to ANCO AeroVantage.
    Back when I lived in snow country, every October was winter blades, every April was summer blades. Been doing that for about four decades.
    Now that I live in a Southern state, Woo Hoo! No more winter blades. I still change them every six months. Even with periodic cleaning and treating them to Mothers VLR, that seems to be their life span.
    Oh, how I miss the days when cars had a pair of 18 inch wiper blades on the front. Now I have that funky setup of a 26 inch and a 16 inch.
    When my 2017 car is paid off in a few years, I may sell it and get an older, less computer-controlled car. I hate it when the car tries to think for me. And I want a rear wiper again.
    I have several gallons of the blue stuff in stock. I may slip in a bottle of orange Rain-X washer fluid to see if I like it.
    Thanks for all the videos, Scotty.

    • @nunyabiznis817
      @nunyabiznis817 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Actually, it was much less. Reason for the squeaking this time was because the window was too dry after the first swipe plus, over time the factory coating has worn off. The blades aren't ever going to be as new, but they will last longer if you clean them, just like anything else. No need to waste denatured alcohol. Glass cleaner will do the trick just fine.

      Treat the windshield with a little bit of white distilled vinegar (same active ingredient that's used in RAINx) I did that and I was in a POUR-DOWN right after--really didn't even have to turn my blades on. When I did, no squeaks. Also.... might ask him a question above...something that i don't know about--so... check out that....

    • @lanceemil3208
      @lanceemil3208 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yorick Aname wrong: the main ingredient in Rain-X is hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane and acts like a silicone coating. Although, it's good to clean glass with acids like white vinegar, it wipes off nearly immediately, whereas Rain-X stays behind & coats much like car wax.

    • @Qui-9
      @Qui-9 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @doceigen
    @doceigen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do this, but I do one more thing too... after cleaning them, I apply a coating of some hydrophobic fluid such as Rain-X, Prestone AS240, G-clean... That protects them from a certain amount of UV destruction and stops water from penetrating the porous damaged surface and leaving deposits. While you're at it, you can coat, then gloss, the windshield itself.

      My thoughts too. I would rather use something that treats the rubber, than something like alcohol that can dry them out. As for what chieftp said, I can see his point but there are rubber treatments that are not oily. I use one from Germany called Gummi Fusslig or something and it's not oily. I believe I may experiment with it. I just don't like the idea of something like alcohol that is known to dry things out. Much as I like Scotty K. I don't think he is correct on this one.

The inspection stations seem to have racks of wiper blades on display and they tend to fail good wiper blades. Before the last inspection at a VALVOLINE Franchise, I inspected my car before taking it in. The failed it for wiper blades, and when I checked, they had torn the blades on the end on both blades.

    Helpful video! One thing to keep in mind of denatured alcohol is that it can actually eat materials softer than metals, I'm not sure what it does to rubber but plastic and fiber glass (printed circuit board) are susceptible to its affects. A gentle concoction I use is 1 part isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, 1 part simple green or purple power, and 1 part distilled water. Good stuff although if SG/PP is left long on softer materials that can be bad too from what I've heard. This can be used on just about everything aside from anti glare coating :)
