The F1 looks almost tiny next to those new Mclarens, and yet it seats 3 passengers and a 100 L more luggage.
its all the safety equipment and crumple zones. wont help you at 200 mph but ok.

i think the mclaren f1 is better than the Bugatti, even tho its like the new king just because you can allways make a faster car, but like the era when mclaren f1 was the best were better

I wish it was still the fastest car with 3 pedals on the floor (that's important), but easily held in a higher regard than most modern supercars 20 years after the XP1 first started demolishing records.

the mclaren f1 is the tip top of my dream car list. i have dream cars for every possible life direction i could take, and if I'm a successful person, then the f1 will be the car i'd die in. but today, i "own" a 997, sitting at a bmw dealer...

imagine a top gear episode where all they do is make lap times with old supercars, Jaguar xj220/s, Porche 959, Ferrari F40/50/Enzo, Bugatti eb110, Lamboghini Diablo/Countach/Miura....... etc. etc.

F1 is impossible to beat but the MP4-12C is a good 'new' start. Really looking forward to see what Mclaren's next move is.
why didnt you compare the MP4-12C to the base F1?

I love the McLaren F1 it is awesome
We were in Italy in April. Went to the Ferrari museum in Maranello. They had 2 F40's there. One was a works race version which had around 750hp. We were also in Bologna when the Lamborghini Grand tour passed through. 350 amazing cars. These cars are rare in NZ. Although one of our Pizza franchises uses a Diablo as a delivery vehicle.

I believe the standard F1 would beat the new car by the same margin or more on a dry track with a pro driver. Even the standard F1 requires much more skill than the new car to drive quickly. The new car would not even be close to the F1 LM on a dry track. The new car is super or hyper, but the old one is a brutal monster.
I Fuckin hate when super cars are compared in wet conditions. You can't really open them up fully. Waste of what could've been a great video.
They always seem to do that on British shows, baffles the hell out of me, maybe they have no choice due to time constraints with the cars?

How do you gather that? This is an Autocar video which happened to use Dunsfold Aerodrome (aka Top Gear Test Track) which is used by other companies and I guess hired out by Autocar for this feature.
Actually that Mclaren was the GRR limited edition built after we won Le Mans in 1995. We made 5 off commemorative editions an sold them for about £780k instead of the £540k of the standard car. The real LM car had a roll cage, restrictors on the engine and even lead in the passenger's footwell as it was underweight. I thinlk we got it down to 900kg. That orange car wasnt built to the same standard as the race car as we beefed up certain bits to improve reliability.

Doubt it! The production F1 is still nearly half a ton lighter and has fan-assisted aero. McLaren themselves said the MP4 was not a successor to the F1 (we now know that's the P1) and is their "entry-level" Macca

The road car would be considerably slower than the track car round the track, and the track car ONLY JUST beat the MP4, so the road car would probably loose the MP4

Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't the F1 GTR geared for a top speed of 180-something? For tracks rather than top speed?

Thought they were going to compare it to the regular F1. OBVIOUSLY the GTR destroys the 12C. I would compare the F1 GTR to the regular P1 see how they compare
That's an LM F1 not a GTR
it actually is more likely a 95 or 96 F1 GTR converted to road spec and painted orange like the LMs. I think there are only 2 LMs out of 5 in public, the other 3 are owned by the sultan of brunei.
If they removed the limiters then it pretty much is a lm
A K that's the point though because obviously p1 gtr faster than F1 gtr so the comparison of F1 gtr vs p1 would be interesting
@@theacehd1742 P1 GTR is slower than a 2015 GT3 car around Red Bull Ring, which is around the same pace or slightly slower than 96 F1 GTR ran per lap in qualifying trim. Long tail is much faster than both. P1 GTR isn't as much track focused as a real race car.
Though if you are talking about a drag race, maybe P1 GTR would win.
MP4-12C is for girls. F1 will always be the king.

Considering that the Mclaren F1 had 3 seats ( one in the "middle front" and 2 in the "rear") is the insurance "lower"?
I know that probably it doesn't matter cause is a Mclaren :P but i got me wondering if other companies could use this configuration, after all is better having 3 functional seats instead of 2.
@Rick258442 Yeah it is true that it is very hard indeed to judge cars and their performance in the dry by looking at how they perform in wet conditions.

Another trivia info.
Senna's MP4/4 was powered by Honda, which designed the NSX.
The NSX suspension and chassis was tuned by Ayrton Senna.
Gordon Murray(sp) the designeer of the McLaren F1 stated that after driving the little Honda NSX that all other benchmark cars like Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini were out. He used the NSX as its benchmark(of course with a lot more power)
Interesting circle.
He's just showing how the F1's design is immortal, it is so beautiful even today because it's not set to any time period, it doesn't look to 90's and could even look modern today.

damn, I saw the F1 for the first time when I was just 10 years old and to this day it still blows my mind. The MP4 looks pretty promising though. Wish I could have me one of those!

@89ford150302 Actually, MCLAREN uses the "top gear test track". The whole development process of the MP4-12C was made around that track. So pretty much every tv program that had acess to the MP4 so far was recorded on that track.
The old one is a masterpiece, one of the kind

yea they are, this is actually developed there. the TG test track was made by Lotus

I believe it is the Top Gear test track considering that is where the mp4-12c was developed.
@jdnic1 i beleive they have an 'LM' version of the 12c.. could be wrong, think i saw it in a mag....

@Sprebound It's only at the TopGear track because the car was being developed and tested there, nothing to do with the show.
The headset in the GTR is painted to match the bodywork. Wonder how much extra that cost.
Among advanced countries, there is a lot of rain in Britain. It's actually a good place to test drive new cars because many countries in the world have rainy weather all year long.

You are halfway right. Yes, the Ultimate Aero was designed for one main purpose: top speed. Jerod Shelby himself said he is not a designer, but an engineer. Style wasn't his forte. That is why he hired Jason Castriota for the successor, the Tuatara. The Ultimate Aero's purpose was to establish SSC, get the record to show what they can do. It served its purpose and set SSC up for the future.
Don't forget the UA also set the slalom record. The car is an all around amazing performer.

I saw an MP4 C parked near me recently and it is a very nice car indeed, but if money was no object you would just have to own the legendary F1, twenty years old and still as good as anything that exists today

Ps. My favorite back then was the Ford GT90 (little kids like strange things and the GT90 was very, very strange), followed by the F1

I think it's hard for McLaren to make a successor that can surpass the beauty and uniqueness of F1. McLaren only needs to renew the technology that is used in F1, like using more powerful v12 engine, dual clutch gearbox, paddle shifter, traction control, digital cockpit, improved suspension, DRS, KERS, etc. The bodywork only needs a minor facelift, like rear lamp.
Look at the Porsches, they changed the appearance slightly for decades, but they improved the technology
the thing i love about the f1 is the drivers seat on the middle. they are both SOOOO damn awesome! i cant wait to finish looking at the video! i believe the F1 will win. lets see

no, it's also called a wing, you'll actually find in the racing world the word spoiler is rarely used. I never heard someone call a wing on a F1 car a spoiler for example.
Mclaren GTR has been my favourite car since the first time I saw it on Le mans when I was 6, and it still is, there's just nothing that's been close to take over its place

Because race cars have no mufflers and no sound proofing. Its is about as loud as a Dragon Force gig in that thing at full song.
Drag racing proves only speed, so I will agree with you. Going around a road circuit test every aspect of the car, from aerodynamics to top speed, from gearbox changes to the handling qualities.
I am a big motorcycle fan. One of the great things about it is, as much as supercars are awesome, motorcycles provide nearly all the performance at a price anyone can afford. I can afford a basically factory race bike.
looking at the f1, and the p1, it's a question of , why and where did they go wrong?
Bo Huggabee the thing is: The F1 was a car that completely relying on the driver like the Ferrari F40. Which made it much lighter and quicker at corners(RWD has a huge effect on corners. MP4 is AWD) And the important thing is power:weight ratio and weight distribution. The F1 has the driver seat in the middle to distribute the weight equally to both sides of the car which affects cornering. In the end: RWD, Light construction and high power, good aerodynamics and weight distribution are the specifications that made the F1 faster.
@mofunzonecom Yes they are... not that that means anything. Although made famous by Top Gear it is really just part of the runways and taxiways at Dunsfold Park aerodrome and available for hire by anybody wanting to test or film cars.
