Brompton figured out a raw finish that works, but the only thing I remember about it is that it's two layers of lacquer. There must be more to it than that. You should ask them.

You two are fabulous creatures. I'd give anything to hang out with you and dissect your brains. I'm a DIY'er self-taught, have never been to school, and own a shop, I build motorcycles (choppers) mostly and just got into mountain biking and was looking up videos on making mtb bikes, and low and behold I found you two. Lol, new sub here great stuff. Does Austin have a youtube channel also? Or Instagram only?

On your weld rod tube holders drill a 1/8" hole in the top cap. Then you can store your short pieces of weld rod in the hole by bending the end of the rod to keep it from falling in the but easy to grab.

try linseed oil on the bike frame. it leave a pretty good finish. it sticks around a lot more than just motor oil

Joe, didn't realize you were from MI. I just bought some of your miter tools. Im also from MI. I actually went to college there worked at Village Bike Shop. I built some wheels for John Black the owner of Velocity before he passed. I also worked for NukeProof and built wheels. Small world. Keep up the videos I enjoy them.

Were you the order to Kalamazoo? I have some friends there. I'm from the thumb and went to college at CMU 2008-2012. Small world indeed.

I was thinking about that raw frame...I live in Madrid (Spain),not a very wet area and I have a few raw frames too and they are not so hard to maintain. 1 of them is clear coat and it is fine but it is true it can rust anyway...Maybe you can blue the bike like the old guns,it is one way to preserve the the steel.

There are always options for a sort of raw finish, but they are almost never trouble free and require care and oversight to keep rust from advancing.

It's not 100% permanent, but you can coat a bare frame in clear epoxy. See www.flickr.com/photos/duncancycles/4057587744/
