- Although the rise of animal life on Earth has fascinated humanity for centuries, tracing its origins to an exact point in history has proven difficult.
The Ediacara Biota-approximately 555 million years old-are recognised as the first known macroorganisms. Yet their assignment to the animal kingdom remains controversial, with some scientists believing animal life didn’t take off until the Cambrian “explosion”, around 20 million years later.
New research conducted jointly by the University of Adelaide and the South Australian Museum, however, aims to resolve the debate. Comprehensive comparisons are being conducted between Ediacaran records and those from Kangaroo Island’s internationally significant Emu Bay Shale Cambrian fossil site, with findings tested against modern marine invertebrates.
The understanding of deep time takes a long time and many separate discoveries. The Ediacaran's importance is only now beginning to show itself.

I used to watch the short educational TH-cam videos for people with short attention spans and low IQs. Now I'm trying to get more in-depth educated. Glad there's videos like this out there. Boring to some, but really intriguing to me. TH-cam would have never recommended this to me, glad I stumbled upon it.

So too, Palaeocast podcast, Royal Tyrrell Museum Speaker Series, Jason Loxton, Historical Geology with Christopher White, History of the Earth Dick Gibson, Oxford Museum of Nat History, U of Chicago-Neal Shubin, PGP Geology. That will get U started and lead to new sources. Once U get the google algorithm working for U, stuff keeps on coming. Persevere in learning the greatest story ever told.
YT definitely doesn't encourage us to learn, only to be shallow and easily distracted. We have to go out of our way to find substantive content.

A Dikansonia fosdile was grounf up and tested for molecules. It contained cholesterol like molecules in animals. More to come.

He might have mentioned that the black splotch on Marrella splendens is its actual ink, an extremely stable compound. The overall presentation is excellent and highly informative.
Some years ago I read of a creature that looked remarkably similar to one of the Ediacaran impression fossils that had come up with a bottom dredge in the Bass Strait. So incredibly long, and still in the same general area? That would truly be a living fossil! At the time of the article no further bottom dredges had been planned (as they are quite expensive) but clearly this is something crying out for more research. Do you know if anything has been learned since?

The professor's answer (~"it depends on what the organism does", iirc) to the last question (~"why did these organisms live in the deep ocean when shallow waters would be nicer") contains an element of the truth, but could have been more direct: Ecological niches get filled because the demand for them is unlimited, while the supply of organisms to fill them is not. The Inuit don't live in the Arctic because it is the easiest place for humans to live, but because the supply of humans is effectively unlimited and SOME humans figured out that they could live best if they moved away from more competitive if otherwise more salubrious climes.

Idk, it’s not that “uninteresting”. I have four boys and if this was something they would be studying in science class I can envision them being interested in learning about some of these early creatures. I mean, they learn about photosynthesis and the different parts of a flower, etc. Well, this seems more interesting than that-strange , alien-looking creatures with thousands of lenses in it’s eyes crawling around on the ocean floor
