    Freddie's face at 10:10 breaks my heart and is why I am so hesitant to take one of these tests. She kept a brave face, but must have felt the same way when studying history in school and realizing on what part of that history she fell (I know I felt horrible, especially because my mom's side of the family is significantly lighter in skin tone than my father's even though they are from the exact same place and can only tell of ancestors that were born and raised on that exact island). A very eyeopening video. I might still get one of these tests done.

      white people now have the upper hand in the world, i have no worries that im going to be denied a service for being white or that i will be racially profiled because of my skin tone. people of colour (especially black people and especially in america) are still oppressed and marginalized, and white people are the reason for this. they can be upset about a terrible event that still shapes their lives today if they want to be, they have plenty reason to be.

    I feel for Freddie, her entire ancestry is a history textbook for slavery, she has west African genetics, which in slave trade era was primarily the spot where Europeans would pick up the slaves (due to the ports) and her European % is because somewhere along her family's history, the family member who was a slave was most likely raped by her owner 😞, I can understand her disappointment, all the other girls are happy at the surprise of their genetic make up while Freddie's is the reality of black Americans. 😣❤️

  • @LouNeptune
    @LouNeptune 7 ปีที่แล้ว +180

    We think of slavery as something that happened a long time ago, something that is distant. But. Here it is. When you're taught in history class about the trade triangle between the continents you are never taught about it in the full gravity that people were taken. Lives were stolen. People were raped. The reality of slavery in the US is never really given the gravity it deserves when we are taught about it. And that is evident so much here. What Freddie knew of her background was minimal because of what others did to her ancestors. Most African Americans do not have the knowledge of their own history that people like me do. And. I don't know. It just makes me so sad. I don't feel like there has ever been a formal acknowledgement of what we did to those people so long ago. We have not given them a chance to grieve.

      Clorox Bleach Crystals First of all of you’re going to comment on another persons history please have your facts right. Africans back then did not see themselves as the same people Cultural, Ethnically, Religiously and they were from different tribes so no they did not see themselves as all the same that idea came from you people.The whole idea “of blackness” wasn’t a thing for them just because they were from the same continent did not make them the same so saying they sold “each other” or “Africans sold other Africans” is an ignorant statement. And also you can’t tell a group of people that they can’t grieved their ancestors and family members because it did not happen to them. Slavery wasn’t just for a few months it was for Over 300-400 YEARS! So the trauma they went through has been passed down through generations after generations. Even after slavery black People were still oppressed and put down by you people with your Jim Crow laws and Police brutality. So we never really got a chance to grieve! And lastly grieving doesn’t have nothing to do with something happening to “you” specifically. If your grandmother got raped and beat wouldn’t you grieve ?

    • @Nolozone

      I know right! I was saddened by it because it shows that part of her heritage was fully African around the 1800s meaning that one of her Black ancestors (probably women) was raped, or had some type of relationship with his/her master. Maybe I'm overthinking it but Black people didn't have it so well in the 1800s and I don't think a relationship between a Black individual and a European individual came about all hunky dory.

      Well, while it's probably likely it was rape, there's no way to know for sure. There were a lot of black mistresses at the time, and I'd say 1/10 slave owners weren't super abusive. Some even had friendly relations with their slaves, and affairs. While it doens't make slavery okay AT ALL, I just wanted to point out that not all slaves were miserable all the time. There's a mild/decent chance that Freddie's ancestor was a lovechild. (says the optimist in me lol)

Like blacks in the USA know about slavery but a lot don't realize it happened to their ancestor. Which is messed up!! Like even if it people you don't know most Black Americans can't trace where they come from. Compared to African- Americans who can trace their ancestor history and bloodline.

      I can't wait until I have some money to do this. My brother is interested, too (which gets us a bit more info, on the paternal side). Our paternal grandmother was adopted at a time when children were often adopted as free labour, not so much because someone wanted to be a loving parent to them. So she was quite disconnected from her roots. She claimed half Ukrainian, half Scottish (very typical of the Canadian prairies), but we've seen with these tests how wrong relatives' claims can be.
      On my mom's side, my grandfather was probably 100% Dutch. He was from a less populated area, a village near Groningen (northern province). My grandmother, we suspect she is mixed with some other ancestry, possibly Spanish or Indonesian (yay, colonialism). She and most of her many sisters had dark hair and pale, olive complexions. She was also from the city, Rotterdam, so an urban area where there's more variety in ethnicity.
      I just like imagining the history of the people I come from, so it would be nice to know.

      Yeah honestly anyone who descends from a most likely interracial couple more than a few generations back, whether they're white with a little bit of African ancestry or black with a little bit of European ancestry, that bit of DNA probably got into their genes through some unpleasant means.

    • @betrousaltaweel
      @betrousaltaweel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Laura Gill no it wouldn't. interracial couples have existed in Europe for thousands of years. The Roman empire spanned 3 continents and was pluralistic, open and multiethnic. interracial marriage occurred frequently over the course of thousands of years as race laws didn't exist. Its the same story in North Africa and Western Asia too.

    • @betrousaltaweel
      @betrousaltaweel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Alter Ego yes Freddie's ancestors probably were raped. its not "for a minority in a minority" most North Africans and most Middle Easterners have some white European ancestry as a result of the Ottoman Empire, the Roman Empire and the Islamic Caliphates each lasting for centuries, spanning three continents, and each being multiethnic with open borders. Interracial relationships were extremely common.

    I really like these types of videos, but it always frustrates me that people don't seem to understand how migration works (maybe it's more of a failure of how history is taught, especially in regards to non-european history and pre-renaissance european history). Of course someone with ancestry in the British Isles is also going to have Scandinavian and French/German ancestry; Anglo-Saxons, Normans, and Vikings have a significant history of exchange. It also makes sense that Freddy's ancestry is largely West African, since it was primarily West Africa that was involved in (and targeted for) the slave trade.

    • @JustAnotherBuckyLover
      @JustAnotherBuckyLover 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I'm from the UK and my ancestry is pretty much entirely native to mainland Britain - so actually you CAN still have relatively pure DNA results, despite all the migration (and invasions) that went on. My surprise was finding the tiny, tiny percent that was Eastern European and that there wasn't MORE from Scandinavia or Northern Europe, considering there are "English" people in my history. but yeah, I think a lot of people fail to understand how the human race spread across this planet.

      I think it's 200, that may have changed, it's been awhile. But it's worth it in my opinion, you learn about your heritage, your genetic predispositions to certain illnesses, like cancers. They even predict what your physical appearance isfrom your DNA, even down to what type of earwax you might have! (Ew, but so cool at the same time)

  • @melinaDom
    @melinaDom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +217

    Watching these videos and seeing how uninformed people are is so frustrating. Freddie thought she could have caribbean ancestry even tho black people from the caribbean, like black people from the US, are the descendants of west african slaves. The half Mexican girl was surprised to have native American although most Mexicans are mestizos, meaning native american and European. Kristen thought all her southern European would be completely Italian, which makes no sense because even people who are straight up from Italy have some other type of southern European ancestry, which explains her Iberian ancestry.

    • @pangi08
      @pangi08 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Agreed. What was super frustrating as well is that the 23&Me rep harbored the misconception that latinx people have only some African in their blood. Tell that to the Caribbean, Brazil, Colombia, Central America... Afro-latinx are already so underrepresented and this just further perpetuates colorism within previously colonized countries.

      It really annoys me as someone from the Caribbean every time I watch these videos and they think their DNA test will say Caribbean. Each island has its own history and is so unique that makes no sense. As well as the Hispanics always expect their test to say Mexican or Spanish and are shocked when there is no such thing 😢

    • @Beaneabean
      @Beaneabean 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      pangi08 Why do black looking latinos have to be called “afro-latinos” and the white ones are just called latinos and not Euro- latinos? I just find that putting “afro” in front of “latino” is undermining their latino culture and that they are not truly latino.
