So fun fact.. I suffered a brain injury from septicemia meningitis.. doctors wanted me on big pharma, meds.. I found a study from the Ukraine about treating sever mental illness by using creatine.. needless to say, I went that latter route.. I honestly never felt better and ended up recovering 100% and then some.... Just a thought for someone experiencing brain health illness.

Creatine is the truth!!!!!! Oh my goodness,. I realized the effects of it unintentionally. I was simply taking it for strength benefits and realized my depression and anxiety/ my memory significantly improved. It was so weird! I had no clue what was happening or the reason for this improvement until I stopped taking it and my depression restarted and the light bulb went off! I’m happy it happened in this order because I know for a fact it works!

I had a severe concussion this year. For a month after I stuggled to exercise, even walk, although my body wasn’t injured besides my head. I had trouble concentrating or reading. I would get very dizzy while driving so I had to stop. I read about creatine for people with traumatic brain injury and started taking it. Within 24 hours all of those symptoms disappeared. I started exercising and driving again. It was very dramatic how quickly it worked.

Pretty much what happened. For almost 5 months I was going through hell gradually. Never had depression before in my life or anxiety etc .
My life was perfect but after a retina detachment operation I started developing insomnia, almost 50 days with maximum 2-3 hours of sleep a day. Lose almost 10kg in the time. Tried everything acupuncture, medication, reiki etc . Nothing worked. Stopped eating gluten.
When I started taking creatine at end of May , my palpitations & tremors subsided. I thought it was what a therapist told me, right about that time- she told me to stop taking the medication & start riding my motorcycle & have faith that I don’t have depression. It was everything opposite what everyone else told me.
So I was told I was ok , maybe psychologically it helped & creatine replaced the medication & 2 weeks after that I went through a spiritual retreat to detox in Vellore / Chennai India . There it was confirmed that I didn’t have depression. Whilst trained doctors claimed I had depression, PTSD etc. it was weird but it been more than a year, I only had a very slight symptom for a day. But I kept telling myself Fuck off & went on with my life. I still sometimes shit in my pants thinking of how I should deal with this if it comes back again but I challenge it daily. Exercising & socialising & drinking with my friends & just not worrying a bit .
I NEVER WANT TO EVER GO THROUGH THIS HELL AGAIN.

My autistic daughter has had only a single meltdown in a year and a half since we started giving her creatine. The one meltdown she had was after two days of being lax with supplementation. Before supplementation she was having two or three meltdowns a day...
However, when you mentioned that it's a slow process for creatine supplementation to effect cognition, and that it can't be used as a "nootropic," that is definitely NOT our experience. When we started supplementation it only took a minute or two for the creatine to effect her behavior. We could also tell when she had a hard day at school and gave her "extra" in the evening to replenish her supplies. When we know she is going to have an extra stressful day (when she will be forced to socialize with a large number of people, for example) we give her extra beforehand and have absolutely seen cognitive improvements with supplementation vs without on an acute basis.

I lost two pant sizes in three weeks.
    Ballooned to 265.
    Lost two shirt sizes.
Had a massive mental change and started looking at life through the lense of joy for the challenges ahead.

Overwhelming feeling of solid vs spongy muscle tissue.
    Endurance massively improved.

I can exercise again and fully functioning, no braces. Doing squats and kettle bell work outs now. Best anti-inflammatory is Noni juice, about 2 tbs a day. Used it for my friends pancreatitis, couldn't produce insulin because of it. After a few days on the juice he was fine, Alive to this day and started the juice 9 years ago. Correlation/Causation ... you gotta separate out three things: 1) meds, 2) Creatine, 3) exercise ... if the reason someone starts using Creatine is because they are beginning a weight training/body building regimen, then that itself could be the reason for the decrease in anxiety, not the Creatine.
That being said, I would not be surprised if Creatine helped.

I noticed it had a subtle mitigating effect on my depressive symptoms, especially when I had poor sleep due to insomnia or graduate school. Similar to the mood-buffering effects when I’m on my standard ketogenic diet. I also noticed that the loading 10 mg dose seemed to occasionally trigger very minor gout flareups - still researching what that mechanism is. So I’ve tried to keep myself around 2.5 mg Creatine (half scoop) most days, sometimes 5 mg when I train hard, and that seems to be sweet spot for me.

Here are the key takeaways from the discussion with Dr. Darren Candow on the potential effects of creatine on mood disorders and brain health:
    1. **Emerging Research on Mood Disorders**:
    - Creatine supplementation is being explored for its potential to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
    - These mood disorders may reduce brain creatine stores, which are crucial for brain bioenergetics.
    2. **Mechanism of Action**:
    - Creatine helps reduce oxidative stress and improves mitochondrial health in the brain.
    - This process could translate into better cognitive function and mood stabilization.
    3. **Current Evidence and Studies**:
    - Most studies have involved participants who are also on medication for mood disorders.
    - There is promising evidence from rodent models, but human studies are still emerging.
    4. **Dietary Impact**:
    - While vegans and vegetarians have lower muscle creatine levels, their brain creatine levels remain similar to those of omnivores.
    - The brain can produce its own creatine, independently of dietary intake.
    5. **Dosage Recommendations**:
    - Higher doses of creatine (around 10 grams daily) over extended periods (weeks to months) are recommended to see significant benefits in brain health.
    - Lower doses might benefit muscle creatine levels but are less likely to impact brain creatine stores significantly.
    6. **Anti-Inflammatory Effects**:
    - Creatine may reduce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, linking muscle, bone, and brain health.
    7. **Sleep Deprivation and Cognitive Performance**:
    - Creatine seems to benefit cognitive performance more than physical performance under sleep-deprived conditions.
    - It helps mitigate the cognitive decline associated with sleep deprivation.
    8. **Creatine Synthesis in the Body**:
    - The body produces creatine through a process involving the amino acids arginine, glycine, and methionine.
    - This synthesis occurs in the brain similarly to how it happens in the liver and kidneys.
    9. **Use as a Nootropic**:
    - Creatine is not effective as an acute nootropic for immediate cognitive boosts.
    - It should be taken consistently over time for cumulative benefits.
    10. **Overall Health Benefits**:
    - Creatine is not just an ergogenic aid for physical performance but also offers recovery and overall health benefits.
    - Its benefits extend across various age groups, from children to older adults.
    11. **Practical Application**:
    - For those considering creatine supplementation, a whole-body perspective is recommended, with patience for long-term results in brain health.

I hate to brake it to everyone but the most likely reason for creatine improving depression anxiety and other mood disorders is probably that the people who started taking it ALSO started working out and or becoming more healthy and eating better and sleeping better.

Don't get your hopes up if you've been dealing with depression for a long time, but there's no harm in trying. It may help a small amount, maybe?, but my depression is too strong for supplements like creatine and fish oils. I still take them daily, but not because I'm entertaining any hope that it'll help - it never has in the past. Perhaps there's more efficacy with these when you're already taking depression meds - like the subjects were doing in the research this doctor is citing.
