Shed camping on a snowy Canadian cliff (while roofing my tiny cabin).

  • Well, I think we can determine that I didn't die in the camping/roofing endeavour! I am unharmed and safe at home, as predicted 😊
Welcome to another overnight on the cliff, and my first time 'winter' camping! Now I know it's not even winter yet, but I feel like we all still call it winter right now. There's snow!
I spent quite a bit of time by that burning barrel that evening, and I even charmed you with some fireside chats - get to know me better! 😉. It was so warm and cozy and I sat there alone with my thoughts, and nothing but the sound and heat of the crackling fire and it was honestly such an incredible hour of my life. No talking, no music, no agenda - just sitting there soaking in the heat and enjoying the stillness. I envisioned what my future nights will be like there when I have the cabin closed in a 'liveable' - will I build a sauna? Will I build a micro hot tub? Where will I put my outhouse? So many ideas were coming to my head.
When it was time to tuck into the shed, I had the generator running with a ceramic heater warming the place up, but then - it ran out of gas! Whattt??!?! I swear I hadn't used it much and was sure it would have lasted longer than half an hour! So - I just made do with a few other tricks up my sleeve and managed to stay warm and get a decent sleep.
We have morning coffee and my interesting breakfast (which was super delicious actually!), and then it's time to get roofing!!
Oh, the roofing. All I'm going to say was that I felt like things were going so well, and then things popped up, as they do, and I was feeling the panic. I time-lapsed pretty much most of the footage for the sake of time, and safety - I was really focused, and methodical in everything I was doing while up on that steep roof. And I'm sure everyone would agree that should have been the priority.
So, the roof is on, and although it's not complete and I need to go back, it's on there! I am writing this on December 10, and as of today, we are being completely snowed in. It is getting more and more challenging for me to be getting out there, but I will be! I intend to pick away at the cabin over the winter, cuz, well, I have too many other things I want to start in the spring!
Thanks so much for joining me - I hope everyone is having a lovely December so far. See you in the next video!
    M 💕

You NOT being intimidated by some of the things you do is such a refreshing thing to see. So many of us are afraid to try new things for fear of failure or being embarrassed,/etc., and you just dig your heels in and go for it! Keep up the great work, stay safe, and thank you for entertaining so many of us!

For anyone then if you already know this Michele, Robert Murray Smith recently discussed what is called a Dutch Heater, although all peoples probabably used the concept. It is where heated rocks are placed into a nonflamable container with holes in it to make heated air.

You talk ALL of the time, you know. Gotta admit, I like that! So many TH-camrs seem to try to get by ASMRing about 2/3 of their video. They'll pan the camera around showing the scenery....forever. Then they'll put the mic over by the campfire to capture the snap crackle pop....killing more time. Ya know Michelle, "I've seen fire, and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end" (THANK YOU, James Taylor).😝 When YOU aren't talking you're putting captions up. In other words you're making an effort to make BETTER videos. You're not just coasting. And that's refreshing....in TH-cam Land. So THANKS!❄❄❄❄🎄

It was a nice one, so thank you!
Some people hate the talking, and other like it. Some people just want to see the job done, others enjoy getting to know the person doing the work. So it’s a balance. I’m glad to hear that some people enjoy the chatting. But in the end, I do like to try and mix things up and provide different types of videos.

I have lived in a 18x 12 cabin for three years with a single extension cord and no water in the middle of nowhere. In winter it often is below 0 Fahrenheit and I use a big buddy propane heater They are great and last for days on a single 5 gallon tank and are indoor safe
As for the ridge. You can attach the peak with shorter screws into the ribs. Also. Most people never look up at the roof after it's done so you could paint it purple with pink polka dots and it still looks good ❤

If I planned to sleep overnight in the same situation, I would get one of the many ‘Portable Power Stations’ that are available on Amazon to power an electric blanket. It’s not quite as low as zero here, but it’s been down to 31 degrees, and for years, I avoid leaving the whole house heat on overnight, by just using an electric blanket. There are a variety of options for power storage/output capacity. The batteries can be charged with solar panels, or charged at home before you go to the site, to make sure that it’s fully charged.
As with most things, it just depends on your budget. They have some costing over a thousand dollars, that would surely be able to power an electric blanket for 7 or 8 hours. There’s one for about $400.** that’s rated ‘600 W’ which seems worth a try.
Whatever the case, keep up the good work, but also keep safety first. The cost of having no broken bones while working on ladders and roofs, is eternal vigilance. I think Thomas Jefferson, said that?
We always think that we can get more stuff built, in less time, for less money, than it usually ever turns out to be. Any tv show that’s about people building houses will show it happen, (unless they own a source of lumber) 😅 at least 80, to 90% of the time.
Check out ‘Grand Designs’ here on TH-cam and it happens nearly every show/project.
You’re getting tons more done than lots of people who like to think that they’re pretty handy with tools would, because you continue to focus and keep at it, and not let a lot of things be excuses for taking a day off. So just be safe with it all, even if it means going slower than you might think it should be. At least you’re getting the roof on before winter really hits, and that’s something to feel good about, right? 🎄Happy Holidays to y’all’s there 😊

Bonjour Michelle. Many thanks for your most recent vidéo. It's cold here too in the north of France. -2 C this morning and just cold all day. watching you throw logs in the burning barrel made me smile. i felt the heat and watching the sparks rise into the sky was quite beautiful. as for the tin on the roof and the scaffolding, nice job. what a inspiration you are indeed. if i may ask please, from your cliff cabin looking at the lake, are you looking north ? stay safe, stay warm and i'm sure that the puppies were glad to have mom home. cheers

You are doing a great job. Do you realize how many people, man or woman, young or old, couldn’t or wouldn’t be able to do what you have accomplished? You are awesome. Keep pushing forward. Stay safe and well and don’t tell the old man you haven’t cleaned up or you’ll never get him in bed with you again. lol 😂

Exactly. That’s what my goal was. I could have easily drove home that night and came back out early the next morning, but I knew I needed to step outside of my comfort zone and test the waters.

Hi Michelle. Pushing your limits again I see. Good to see you. This is the way to learn survival skills. In a way. Need to think about what you are forgetting so to have backup for backup. Either way looked like fun sort of. Great video. Be safe and happy. G

When winter camping you actually will stay warmer by removing your outer clothes and get in your sleeping bag. That’s what we did when we winter camped in Minnesota in zero Fahrenheit and below weather. Put your clothes in your sleeping bag with you and in the morning they are warm. Your boots on the other hand will be colder then sh/:!

The Girl From The Night Before did a fantastic job getting the roof up and dealing with the cold and with the challenges that popped up (as they do). The Outsider made a DIY shed heater stove that uses "emergency" candles made from an ammo box around nine months ago that turned out really good. 09:42 - "We won First Prize, and we also got a call from Child Protective Services."

"Men's small dress shirt" - Is that where Shaun's inspection uniform came from? 🤔
Chalking gun above the bed for defense - Well it DOES qualify for a GUN I guess. 🤣
That breakfast looked absolutely awful 😖
All the struggles are going to make you appreciate it that much more when it is completed. And know somewhere out there, a group of us are going to give you a standing ovation and round of applause on that day.

Why don't you do the boiling inside?
The energy lost I to the wild would then heat up the cabin.
