I should have known this might happen. Delivery day, with a twist. Winter in Canada.

  • Winter is upon us again! In this video I pack my truck with a bunch of stuff to take to the cliff - sawhorses I recently built, the halved logs I prepared for the walls, gasoline, and a few other odds and ends.
The snow was much deeper out there than I thought it was going to be, and under the layer of fresh beautiful snow was a sheet of ice. 🥶
The actual delivery of my load of goods didn't take me as long as I thought it was going to, which was a bonus. I thought I would need to make at least a couple of trips up and down the mountain, but once was enough in these conditions!
I have spent oodles and oodles of time trying to make a decision about how to work around my wall issue (the issue is that the subfloor is a little bit too big, so there is a lip of about 1/2 - 3/4"). The way I really wanted to do this (after a lot of thought) was to shim out the posts and upper beam to match the subfloor, and this would allow me to run my wall boards down over my rim joist (allowing me to overlap a wall board and cover my rim joists in a flush manner). As things are now, the wall board is sitting on the lip, and I'm not keen about that. But, I will just have to work with what I've already got going, otherwise I am basically taking things apart and starting a new process over, and that is taking steps backwards instead of forward. So, I will move on with what I've got going on currently, and make it work!
I achieved what I set out to for this trip - I never know how long something is going to take me with weather conditions like this. Low and behold, my casual thoughts about getting stuck in my little parking lot came true. It wasn't the amount of snow, it was the fact that under the snow was a solid sheet of ice. I was stuck there. Getting close to dark, I was rushing to gather branches and bows (using a hatchet I had in my truck, luckily), and just as I was about to drive out, someone drove by. Up the lake there are a few properties with people who access their land using the same off-road trail, and this guy is one of them! He is also the guy that ploughs the trail for everyone, and that's the reason he was out there (he had just started to clear things up near his property). Anyway, I was VERY glad to see him, although I was confident that my work/plan would have got me moving forward enough to get back in the tracks again. I would have needed to drive up towards the other peoples properties in order to turn around, though, which would have just added a chunk of time to my already 2 hour drive home.
As it was, it all worked out and I was home about 7:30pm.
I am picking up chains for my truck in a day or so! (although I anticipate things being ploughed by the next time I go out there).
Fun times! Arriving home that night kept Steve off of P.O.F. 😂😂
Thanks for watching my friends, and see you in the next video 😊

At the risk of being a Monday morning quarterback, I had one thought. As a SAR pilot, we train that "if it isn't attached to your body, it is useless luggage". I know it sucks climbing down with your pack, BUT if your survival supplies (emergency shelter, fire, water, food, protection, and signal/comms device) is in your pack, the pack needs to stay on your body. God forbid, you slip and bugger up an ankle or two on the climb down. Having the pack is literally the difference between a minor injury inconvenience and not surviving. At the risk of being overly dramatic know that we have recovered (versus rescued) many with seemingly mild injuries. My packs are split, so if I have ditch the "luxury or excess" items, I can pull out a single bag with the 72-hour critical items and attach to my body. Oh, my second thought was "I achieved what I set out to for this trip" is a very powerful statement. How cool it is what you and Steve are doing? You are kicking butt up there both at home and with the cabin. Enjoy, keep dancing, and rock on!!

Cable chains on ice is like playing tug of war on roller skates...with wires stuck into your tires. Stick with cleated chains (4 since you don't have lockers and probably like to steer). For tensioners, have back ups to your back ups and a 15' piece of 550 cord for each chain. Kneepads and nice weather practice will help. Chains and tree branches don't mix, so put them on before you get stuck. They are a tool not a weakness. A winch (or small come-a-long) can help get you onto your chains if there is an "oops". Stay safe.

If you send the rope from the SkyMule through the brake first and then the dead leg from that tied to the ladder you would be able to keep the SkyMule in place without having to try and hold two ropes at once, and it would also put the pulling force on the ladder towards the rock wall instead of trying to pull it away from the wall! 👍
Let the anchor for the brake take the load instead of trying to hold it back while you raise the load with the pulley on the SkyMule!

Saw horses. What if you take a piece of plywood (1/4 or 3/8 inch) cut to size to replace the cloth shelf. Put a piano hinge on one side so it would fold up between one leg. You could put dowel pegs near the top of all 4 legs so when panel is vertical and sandwiched between dowels it won't fall to either side. Providing the panel is short enough to fold up inside the leg.

In a pinch you can loop rope through your rims to simulate chains . Doesnt work on most wheels because it will snag on your disc brake calipers . Odd your rear wheels werent turning . Try very lightly touching the brake pedal to slow the wheel that spins . It can help get the other wheel turning. Rock back and fourth a couple inches slowly going further each time as opposed to spinning warming up holes for your tires to sit in. Keep a normal dirt shovel with you. Try and chip gravel out of a bank somewhere and tuck it under the tires. If that doesnt work , get to starting a fire. Stay put.

Hmmm, watching your rear wheels doing nothing in the snow. One thing I've changed on all my 4WD vehicles, is to have the innards of the rear-end swapped out for a posi-traction unit (sometimes called a limited-slip differential). Makes a massive difference in traction, as without doing that, you still get that one rear wheel spinning and the other one doing nothing. I've never needed chains since I did that. Costs about $1000, and beats having to deal with putting chains on/off.

Good video and great effort getting down with the gear etc! Glad you got help getting unstuck/getting out safely! Place is REALLY coming on great the drone shots really make you realise how far you've come with it and got done! Considering there was LITERALLY NOTHING there! Amazing effort 99.9% single handed! Very impressive! 💪

The plans are less then $20 a month and they could save your life in the back country. They also let you send messages to anyone.

Gas Can. If you had a plastic bag (1qt/1gal.zip lock, garbage bag, grocery bag, any kind of plastic bag, you could fit the corner of a bag over the gas can opening, then screw the cap down over the plastic bag and opening of the can. The plastic should act as a seal and keep the can from leaking fuel. Very temporarily. More than likely the black soft plastic seal that fits on the bottom of the cap, is now missing, torn, or no longer round, hard and not pliable any longer, or flat. The O-ring should be soft and pliable, and round. Amazon sells sets of gas caps and the little funnels that go with them, in small sets. I had bought a new gas can with the new pain in the arse cap. I bought the old reliable kind of caps and funnels off of Amazon. That's how I know what they offer.
Getting down the mountain from the lift. All you need is one of those little blue plastic sleds, they sell in all the hardware stores for the kids. Sit down in the sled just past the lift point, lift you feet, give yourself a little tiny push and weeeeeeee! over the icy rocks, twigs, leaves, branches and all. I would highly recommend a good snowmobile helmet with a full face guard and shield. Easy Peezy. Now that sounds like real fun!!
Another great way to increase you traction is to slightly lower the tire pressure in all 4 tires. This increases the contact patch between the tire and the ground. Don't forget to reinflate your tires once you get back to the main road and find a gas station with air.

      Great tips! Thank you!
I would never sled down that mountain. It would be a death sentence 100%. Too many downed trees, stumps, branches, rocks, and not really enough snow to cover it safely. Plus the grade is insanely steep (I’d ski that grade but not sled it as you have no way to control your speed on a little sled).
      I’d rather live. 😂

@@michygoss7148 Hi Mich, Yeah I was just kidding about the sledding part. i have used the plastic bag trick myself returning from the gas station with the cans in the back of the SUV. I was so afraid the gasoline smell would never come out of the car. I was lucky, I had a thick plastic mat underneath the gas cans. Washed the gas right off. Found the new gas can caps immediately after that. BTW, your hubby dresses up nicely. I didn't realize he was so tall. You make quite an attractive couple.

Beautiful work! You should just put the floor boards down and tack them with one screw each then remove the screw and slide them together after they dry to take up any gap then add a filler strip against the wall. Keep it up.

    • @michygoss7148
      @michygoss7148  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, I was half contemplating that. Maybe even just a brad nailer, although getting all those nails out would be much more of a pain than one screw.
(I was also trying to be cognizant of the fact that I have am the ice and shield membrane and don’t wanna put a bunch of holes in it with the walls still open as it’ll trap moisture potentially). 🤷🏻‍♀️

Michelle, Does your truck have true four wheel drive: Does all four wheels turn when you are stuck? Years ago I converted to limited slip differentials in front & rear axles on my old 80 Bronco, before doing that, I actually only had 1 wheel in front, 1 in rear turning when in 4 wheel drive when stuck. Since then I haven't had to use the mounted winch or chain up to get unstuck at all. Even if just the rear diff has limited slip, most times you can power thru snow and mud, especially if you carry a couple bags of sand over rear axle. Much easier than struggling with chaining your tires.
