Wilssenton R8 (stock tubes for now) and 40 Anniversary Conetes in the very same color as you have is my home setup and I totally LOVE it! Thanks for a great review!
I want to thank you for piquing my interest about this speaker, I've seen it go on sale from a local vendor due to their comete being a demo piece that hasn't even been properly broken in yet in great condition. when it went for 1100$ I knew it was the time to buy this majestic piece of audio equipment, I've tested them out and they indeed didn't disappoint :) thanks for the great reviews over the years, and happy holidays tarun.
@@Finn_2187_Binks same here, ive heard decent things about kinki studio lately, but they dont have a representitive locally in my country, id have to look into searching for an amplifier for quite a while it seems :)
@@Finn_2187_Binks ive bought the speakers first, and still have them in the box, although my quest for amps is moreso about getting them as neutral as possible, since in my subjective opinion id like the speakers themselves to color the music the most, and then the other components coloring hopefully to a minimum. ive seen though that throughout journeys in audio peoples opinion changes, thats what makes the hobby so much fun in my opinion :)
Tarun, it’s great to hear that you and your family are on the mend. Another outstanding review. I really like your take on audio gear. Thanks for creating such great content!
I'm so glad you like this speaker. I have the Titus EZ which has many of the attributes you're talking about and is an excellent speaker. Who cares if it's "coloured"? Its voicing is just so vibrant and full of charm: detail without harshness, punch without aggression, rich mid range without verging into over sweetness. Vive La France!
Hi Tarun, I bought the Comete 40th(blonde sycamore) anniversary a few months ago, I pair them with a Naim uniti atom and a SVS Sub, and I must say I am in Love with these Speakers, even my Wife likes them, both sound and looks. (the finish is just perfekt, very beautiful speakers, integrated nicely in our livingroom) I think you describe the sound very acurate, romantik, sweet sounding, very smooth sounding, what i Really love about them is the midrage, just sounds so natural, and the best Part is they Sound very good at low Volume. The tweeter is also amazing, when I got them I could not believe I am listening to a horn loaded speaker . They work perfekt with the Naim uniti atom, very easy to drive. My only complain would be, they dont have a lot of body in the midrage and, I am missing a bit of the guitar strings decay, but I guess It has to do with the paper/Cellulose driver. The SVS subwoofer Was helpfull with the body of the midrage. I also wished I could get a REL sub, but Rel customer Service answer my technically question after 4 months, so in the meanwille SVS was very helpfull buying and setting a sub. Due to my room restriction I had to place the speakers directly against the Front wall, just 2 cm away, and still Sound very good, not the deepest soundstage but still decent. I also must say I got room treatment from Gik Acoustics. Thank you for you rewiew, and as always great Job my Friend Greetings from Austria
Hi Tarun, great review as always. On tonality, I’m convinced this is a red herring. It’s fairly easy to pick a pair of speaker based on tonal balance from a shop demo. In fact, I think that’s about the only thing the shop demo can show. My Monitor Audio GR20s were chosen for their tonal balance against some much warmer or softer speakers from the likes of Spendor and Rogers. However, the transformation to something approaching true high end was achieved by replacing parts in the electronics as well as in the passive crossovers for much higher quality items. Along with some other tweaks, I steadily removed all traces of harshness in the treble and looseness in the bass as well as dropping the background noise floor. The result, no change in the tonal balance, but a huge increase in the ability to hear the music rather than the hi-fi, if that makes sense. The same speakers that showed up every imperfection in poorly recorded or compressed music, now reveal every nuance or inflection of vocals. Images are locked solidly in place, even when seated well off the sweet spot central position. Guitar strings are easily differentiated, as are horns and so it goes on. My conclusion is that once you have a pair of speakers which suit your tastes tonally, that are capable of resolving the highest level of detail, then keep them. Spend your money on better source and amplification and don’t forget all the noise reducing ancillaries such as cables and power.
Glad to hear you and family are well. Ive not had the pleasure of listening to triangle speakers, but im liking the description . Fantastic review again, always informative and well presented, thanks.
Thank you Tarun, your review encouraged me to purchase those beauties and I am close to Heaven. Maybe is only a sinergy between my room, my amp and my ears but I am really happy with my Cometes. Keep your good working. All the best from Romania!
I aim for a warmer sounding speaker that reproduces vocals in the most natural way. If it can't make vocals sound real I have a hard time listening to them, no matter if they are impressive in the bass. As always great job describing the sound of these speakers. You paint a descriptive picture with your reviews!
Thanks for another fine review Tarun. As I've mentioned before B&W 702 S2 for me these days although in the past I did like a warm & romantic typre of sound.
Hi Tarun,.. as Nico said: "An absolute pleasure to listen to. Anyone who watched any of your presentation will continue to do so." ...and I add, not without the valid reason. Regarding tonality...I have the both worlds...with two diferent kinds of audio systems, depending on my mood and the music genre. You made me smile and glad regarding the ProAc praising. Kind regards.
I have a friend that just got a pair of BRO 3’s. He loves em, he’s listening to his music collection as if it’s all new. I haven’t been over there to hear them yet but I’m lookin forward to it.
Hope you are feeling better soon. There are so many good speakers around at this price. I prefer sound as it is, especially piano and cello. Thanks for another very interesting video.
My word Tarun, I've never seen Comete speakers in Australia. They are simply stunning. What are they like with orchestral string sections? If there is anything that makes me want to move the spectrum slightly to the warmer, it's the strings. My Dynaudio Excites were a touch on the bright side, but improved after 100 hours or so of use...which brings me on to the issue of speaker choice... Armed with 5 CD's I spent quite a while auditioning many speakers back in 2000 and that really made me realise that there are always trade-offs. The most stark were a pair of Tannoy floor standing speakers. As I listened, my immediate reaction was a definite no, but then the vocals started and wow! Still to this day I remember the beautiful way they reproduced the soprano and tenor in a duet. That said, it was not enough to overcome the shortfalls, but nevertheless a great lesson on the differences between speakers. And, even though I've had the Dynaudios a while, I still get the spine tingles with their reproduction of particularly the woodwinds. Two further points...I missed the video last week, so I am very relieved that you and your family have hopefully come through covid without serious problems. I hope all symptoms abate quickly. Lastly, my listening to your excellent review was somewhat interrupted by my dog snoring under the bed...a different take on a sub-woofer...I think your reviews put me in a good mood which seems to manifest in the irresistible urge to make cringeworthy comments!
Every word in this "flick" is spot on. Iw got the Triangle Signature Theta,s, wich gives a tad wider and deeper soundstage, for +twice the money. I bought mine used for the same price as the Cometes. If not I would have cried blood,, 🤬😂. The Cometes are a steal, if that soundsignature is what your after.
Thank you Micheal. We are all doing well, so kind of you 👍😊👍 The 40th Ann Cométe have great tone in the midrange, including with strings. They do a fair job with big orchestral works due to decent dynamics but would be better by some in terms of speed and clarity 😊👍
@@abritishaudiophile7314 This is merely an aside Tarun prompted by your highlighting the characteristics of speed and clarity. Perhaps this is why I'm such a fan of planar magnetic headphones for large orchestral works....and pretty much most things...
Hello TARUN, enjoyed this review, again thanks for the measured approach. Sorry to hear that you were all sick over the holidays, sadly I’ve heard this same story from many friends. Glad no one was hit too hard. Just got my booster this past week :) All the best for 2022!! R
😞SORRY TO HEAR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WERE SICK 😷 BUT 🤗 VERY GLAD EVERYONE IS DOING BETTER TARUN A BEAUTIFUL SPEAKER TO SEE 👀 AND FOR MANY …YOUR DESCRIPTION SHOULD ENABLE THEM TO ENJOY THE SPEAKERS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME 😍😍😍
Thank you Tarun for another interesting review. And I'll say again your comparisons of the product being reviewed to similar products is most useful. Turning to the speaker question, I really don't care for bright, forward sounding speakers. But too much warmth can also be bad. What I really appreciate is soundstage depth. As for the British weather, my forebears moved across the pond! (Though I doubt it was the weather)
Thank you for sharing buddy. I am sure the weather was a pleasant surprise for your forebears. Little did they realise that many generations to come would still be benefiting 😊👍
I have to say, Tarun…that your photography is getting as refined as some of the gear that you review….Your improvements in framing, lighting and just general care visually is noticeable! The shot outside with the speaker on its back, taken from the bottom of the speaker with the word TRIANGLE across the foreground of the image, and your beautifully lit slo-mo showing of the movement of the woofers were highlights for me. 👍🏼 Nicely done!👍🏼
Another excellent review. Glad to hear you and your family are feeling better. I prefer a more romantic sound. I want to be able to listen for hours without fatigue. I must also admit to being a fan of the floor standers and of Andrew Jones' designs. I have the Elac Debut 2.0 F6.2s powered with a Cambridge AXR100. Maybe not the last word in detail, (what the heck I can't hear anything above 10K Hz anyway,) but pleasing to me. You have me curious about the Willsenton R8 so thank you for that review.
Hello for the new year Mr T, Hearing approximately what the producer was aiming at is my personal hi-fi ambition, so the ATC type sound is what I prefer, honesty is by far the best policy for me.
Hi Tarun, glad to hear your are all recovering from covid. I really like the sound of Triangle speakers and thought the review of the Comet anniversary was very good. To me Triangle have a nice mid range that agrees with me. I have another product that would be interesting for you to critique and that is Isoacoustics which manage vibration of the speaker through the stands resulting clearer base and tone? You are someone I feel will give your followers the straight goods on this tweak. Cheers
Thank you for reviewing this! I JUST bought a pair of the standard Triangle Comète in walnut finish during the holidays, and after finally pairing them with an Advance Paris A10 Classic (after being disappointed in the sound with an SA3 + PA3) I absolutely fell in love with them, and the way in which you describe the sound signature of the 40th Anniversary edition certainly describes my experience with the standard edition. I originally wanted to decide between the Comète and Aria 906 but ended up keeping both, playing music on the Comète in the living room with only the Christmas tree lights on was a surprisingly warm, inviting and "romantic" experience, something that Focal and Fyne Audio just couldn't replicate as perfectly. When I discovered there was a 40th anniversary edition though, at albeit over double the price I paid for mine I was still very interested and curious. I am not sure the sound difference would warrant the expense but considering how beautiful they are, that beautiful dark finish blended with an elegant rose gold...Just wow.
Tarun, You do an exceptional audio review. However, it’s that “British Disposition” of yours that just make them shine so well. At least for this old dude outside of Houston on the other side of “the pond”. Well done and Happy New Year. Glad you and the family are doing well after the “bug”. Mitch
You are spot on, well said. No BS waffling, interesting what age and experience teaches you and how to respond and ask a question precisely & positively. I wish there were many more like you out there. I am even further from the source than you are English not my native language, but the internet is an amazing media when you get to know it. I am in one of the once the best first world environments on the planet. (South Africa) Which, was dumped into darkness 27 years ago.
Glad to hear on the family recovery as well. In my younger days, I was all about the cool analytical and more V shaped end of the spectrum. Loved studio monitor sound too. These days and with some hearing loss impact, I can enjoy klipsch or my small paradigms though with such a presentation, only in limited doses and at lower listening volumes. I now lean toward the warm / warm side of neutral on audio over all.
I have some Comete EX with upgraded crossovers and I really appreciated this review with similar speakers (if of course better drivers). I learned a lot of good tips on placement and it was also interesting to know how good you find ProAC's previous attempt with the SC1 To answer your quesion, having BR08s too I look for the triangle sound, I'm sold they are a great match for my ears. Somewhere in the middle with their own instrumental component they can add to the sound which complements the vast majority of radio and recordings.
What I love about this review is comparing the speaker with a benchmark speaker regardless of the price (people can judge how close these speakers come to perfection) Another thing I love is comparing how different amps power the speakers differently (so people can decide how much they want to spend on an amp).
@@abritishaudiophile7314 Tarun, you always tell it like it is, brother. You aren’t trying to be a crowd pleaser like some of your American counterparts. Things are way over customer friendly over here to the point of skewing the facts. When I listen to your reviews, I am confident that I am in good hands….Can you do a comparison review of the Dynaudio Heritage Special ??
Great question !Since I listen 2 to 4 hours of music almost every single day, linearity and soundstage are paramount . On the other hand, I wasn't surprised when you said the Comete didn't image well. The mediocre quality of the x-over parts was a dead giveaway. When I upgraded the x-over on my present speakers, they went from dull to fantastic. Hope you get shipshape soon! Keep those old speakers. I'm sure you won't be able to find something better under 10k$!
@@abritishaudiophile7314 Hi Tarun, it seems Yves is another convert to the crossover upgrade school. Tempted to do your Proacs yet? I’d have thought it would make an excellent topic for a video. And it’s not as if you don’t have other speakers around whilst doing the upgrade. I’m just pulling together a parts list to upgrade my study system speakers later in the year. Go on, give it a go, you know you want to. 😉
@@abritishaudiophile7314 Hi Tarun, it was a big day when I dived into the GR20s, however, nothing was irreversible. Having said that, I did drill a couple of extra holes in the back to take the third pair of binding posts! I can’t wait to hear how you get on and I’ll be happy to share the components I picked if it helps.
Hi Tarun, great review! I have a dilemma you may be able to help me with. We live in an old Italian palazzo with huge rooms and I think I need bigger speakers. Currently I have the Titus EZ running off a Primare i15 prisma connected to a sub. They sound great but I’d like more depth of soundstage. Which would you say was the better option from the Comete 40, Genese Trio or the KEF R3… My wife would probably appreciate an answer more than me because it’s driving her mad! Best wishes Darrell
I have just completed a review of the Primare I15. Link below… th-cam.com/video/WvxRDrl7aOU/w-d-xo.html I haven’t reviewed the R3 but it sound like you may want to consider floor-standing speakers in a very large space. I don’t know what type of speaker I’d prefer. That said I’m fairly young and have only just started on the speaker journey. If it isn’t cancelled I will be hoping to attend the UK HiFi Show Live at the Ascot in September to figure out where I stand on the romanticism vs realism spectrum. But to ask you a question to your question, why not both? I have a pair of warm headphones in the Sennheiser HD6XX and a pair of energetic, zingy headphones in the Ultrasone ED8. While I must admit that I prefer the Ultrasone ED8 over every other headphone I’ve ever heard, (HD800S, Beyer T1P + T5P, Focal Clear, Hifiman Arya, Audeze LCD-2, Sony MDR-Z1R) it doesn’t do warm and comfortable when I’m feeling in the mood for that - which is where the HD6XXs come in. But at the end of the day, I go back to the ED8s and let my jaw drop at how incredible they are to my ears.
Hi Tarun, great review. Comparing triangle comete with dali menuet se, which will be better for small room with position about 20cm from side and back wall? I'm using Willsenton r300 current with dali spektor. Will be great to get advice from you. Thank you very much
I like a warm tone, a gentle smiley face for frequency response with a slight BBC dip to avoid sibelence. I find this is the best for low and high volumes. Anything with boosted mids ruins the sound, I like to hear the vocals coming from behind the speakers which helps create depth. You did ask Tarun.
Great review. Will keep these speakers in mind if I decide to change the Quad Z-2s. Apart from your Highly Recommended, the built in France fact is a big attraction. Also that you’ve tested them with the Exposure 2510.
Hi Tarun, great review as always, really appreciate all the info you provided. I am having a Triangle BRO3 paired with Rega Brio - do you think switching to Triangle 40th Anniversary Comete would be a clear step up? I feel like BRO3 is a bit too forward in the midrange for my taste. I would like to see more balanced presentation and more refinement. Also, I am leaning toward a slightly warmer signature. Thank you.
Thank you Aleksander. Much appreciated. The 40th Ann Cométe should be a significant improvement over the BRO3 when partnered with your Brio amp. As always, I would recommend an audition before buying 👍😊👍
Hi Tarun, I'm glad you escaped any serious consequences from your illness. Great review and now you hav me curious abut the Triangles. Maybe you should call yourself the Audiophile Enabler. Personally, I really dislike harsh or overly bright a speakers and go for full bodied richness in tone. Needless to say I'm a soft dome tweeter fan and always take claims about metal dome tweeters with a pillar of salt. That said, the JBL 1600 HDI speakers are not at all objectionable. With no pretensions of audio purity, I just want to hear what I like. Speaking of which, I just found a used pair of red Dynaudio Special 40 speakers and made them mine. I really love this speaker and the red finish is stunning. I found the Evokes to be too sleepy and laid back. Thanks for the tip on PS vane tubes. I slipped a 12AX7 into the preamp section of my amp and it is lovely.
Just a note on BBC LS3/5a related speakers: try the DIY kit Q7 Mini Monitor with the Gold Badge Crossover (very easy to build, less than GBP 1,500 per pair). Not warm and romantic, but very balanced. Really well balanced, no midbass bump. Very nice stereo image. My Dynaudio Special 40s sound dull in direct comparison (and smooth and heartwarming), until you're used to the Dynaudio sound again.
I really believe that people should stop obsessing about perfect technical performance of components with their eyes, and start trusting their ears more. Just because a component mesures close to perfect technicaly, doesn't mean it sounds pleasing. Case in point, take the R8 for instance. I'm positive it doesn't mesure well technicaly, but sounds really good. We are not machines. Human beings should own hi fi components that bring them pleasure and stir emotions out of their music collection.
Great review thank you. I must admit I went from Elac to Klipsch and they are not fatiguing at all. Went from accuracy to a more lively sound and more engaging for me at lower volumes. I know many will disagree but I am not looking back.
Hi Tarun, a little late to this review but what an excellent job (as we have now come to expect from you). With speaker tonality, I am not in to brash and bright speakers. I like them to extract the detail from the source but not be in your face. I am listening to Audiovector R3’ Arette, not by any means inexpensive, but ended up there for good reasons. If you have not listened to them may I recommend that you do. They also have the R1 Arrete stand mount version which for me required a sub which I didn’t want cluttering the floor. For me it is difficult to find single system speakers that will not mask terrible and over bright recordings without losing quality and detail in the music one loves. If I was honest with myself I lean to a richer sound, I’m using a hybrid amp specifically for that reason, it is sometimes hard to find speakers that will give clarity to vocals, hate it when I listen to a piece and can barely understand what they are singing, again somewhat down to recording, mastering and pressing I think. Keep up the great work Tarun, you do an excellent job with the quality and detail in your reviews. Happy to also hear that you are all well following the undesirable Xmas events.
Hi Tarun, Just wanted to say thank you for the high value and good quality reviews that you do. I enjoy your clear, measured, and unembellished reviews. Your channel has only recently been discovered by me and am thoroughly enjoying your approach. Keep more coming and I appreciate the amount of work that goes into these reviews. I have recently purchased Floyd Toole's Sound Reproduction Book (3rd Edition) and am enjoying the insights and science of acoustics. I valued your series on how to's and selecting HiFi components. I am getting back into HiFi after many decades of being away from it. My system comprises: Prima Luna EVO300 integrated amp. Rega Planar 3 TT, Marantz CD6007, Lindemann LimeTree DAC/streamer and have a Nakamichi LX3 coming so I can play some old cassette tapes (I finally own a Nakamichi LOL). I look forward to watching more reviews and wish you well for the future of the channel. Cheers Tony
Hi Tarn, love your comments on this speaker. It is soundwise compareble with the speakersound of a Focal speaker? Manu Thanks, keep up your fine work and stay healthy for you and your family! Warm greetings from the Netherlands, Bram
On that last bit, I do like a touch of air on top, good bass weight plus a small lift at 350-400hz for slightly rich, warm side of neutral presentation. The comment about upper midrange of Triangle, guessing this wd be around 1000hz?
Thank You Tarun for another great review, I'm looking forward for your new REL T7 Subwoofer, and would love some tips on integration with stereo setup, specially it was setup by John himself who assisted you, I have REL-T5x with Raidho-X1 speakers that I need to set it up. thank you once again.
Well … I am watching this review with the sound going through my Atoll IN100 and the Blonde Sycamore Comètes. (BTW, the pronunciations are ‘koh MET’ and ‘es PREE’ - Francophile here!) Yes, the 40th Anniversary models are built in France rather than China. It’s interesting that while the user manual and website state the sensitivity as 90dB, the outside shipping carton says 92 dB. By my subjective listening I would not disagree with the 92 dB rating, as they can be driven to high levels by my DECware SE84UFO Zen amp, single ended triode - and they sound particularly glorious with the Zen. I suspect, however, that the more important factor is that they are a pretty easy load. Triangle have sworn me to secrecy but I’ve seen the curve which seems to confirm this. I agree that bass extension (and definition) is more than might be expected for a 2 way with a relatively small mid-woofer. I’m satisfied with it, but if I were move to larger room and play more bass-heavy music, yes, I would explore a subwoofer. I might somewhat disagree with setup and partnering equipment. I admit to being set up in a small room that has more furnishing (read: “stuff”) that it probably should, I find the Comètes to be pretty sensitive to positioning. Both soundstage and imaging can change markedly with positioning. The last mile for me, however is the ROOM. If the room does not have proper acoustic treatments, we’re not hearing the best that any speaker and system can deliver. (The same goes for cables - I am currently using WireWorld Mini Elite Silver which have proven much better than a much more expensive AudioQuest that I tried. But that’s another story.) And as I alluded earlier and you referenced, the partnering amplification plays a huge role. My DECware all-tube SET gets more out of the Comètes than the Atoll, but of course the Atoll has gobs more power in reserve. The Atoll is by NO MEANS a slouch and I’ll admit that my sample my not yet be fully broken in. And it’s interesting that you also found a valve amp your favourite combination! 🤔 I did purchase the accompanying stands for the Comètes but have not yet done the mass loading, which I am pretty certain will add another level of performance. The Comètes bolt on to these bespoke stands which not only stiffens things up, but come with a variety of spikes and feet to suit whatever floor one has. All in all I mostly agree with your review, which should be very helpful to anyone considering these speakers. And given the same listening space and careful setup, a comparison to the ProAcs (ignoring price difference) is useful. Since the 40th Anniversary speakers from Triangle are limited editions, anyone considering them should grab the opportunity to audition or demo them. They won’t be around for long and I suspect owners will keep them for a long time.
Hi Tarun, Thx for another great review I ve been using triangle for years and most say i have a soft spot as well for triangle sound. I running a pair of Triangle Genese Trio with Cyrus one amp and most say since the swoop to Cyrus my Trios got there new fresh youth 😊 but still that triangle smooth sound.. after your Trio review and now comete 40th do you think the swoop from Trio to comete 40th is a night and day upgrade? Besides the slightly better mid control is it worth it? I heard the standard comete and comete 902 they where good buy for money. But can comete 40th do overall better than Trio or is Theta the only option 😊 B regards Z
Thank you Zoran. It is hard for me to be sure as some much time has passed since I reviewed the Trios. They are similar speakers in many ways as you may expect. I wouldn’t upgrade Trios to the 40th Ann Cométe. You should look higher up the range 😊👍
@@abritishaudiophile7314 thanks for you reply Tarun, Which other up the range speaker do you think will out perform the trios? And match the Cyrus one 😊 B regards Zoran
Hi Tarun, glad to hear that you and your family are ok. Very nice review as usual. I am interested in triangle speakers. Do you think that an audiolab amplifier could be a good match? I like a Natural presentation.. It seems that those two products could pair well. Thanks a lot!
Hi Tarun!Great to hear you and family are ok!!Can you explain me wich relationships are between the crossover set up and the tonality and Sound Signature of the speakers??? Thanks and cheers!
Tarun, I appreciate your refined and elegant reviews. Thank you. I am not in audiophile territory yet. I'm running an NAD C740 35-Watt receiver driving an old pair of Boston Acoustics A70. I like a smooth midrange and open airy high end. I am willing to sacrifice some some bass response to get it. The Bostons were a great value, "Back in the day." One question that perhaps you have already addressed: Do you still see any advantage in acoustic suspension loudspeakers over modern ported designs? Or has the port been so optimized that there's no reason to avoid it? Thanks again.
Thank you Tim. Very kind. In my book, all you need to be audiophile is to love music and care about sound quality. There are plus/minuses to both ported and acoustics suspension designs. The popularity of bass reflex (ported) designs is due to the extended bass response but nine times out of ten it will be less well defined than a sealed box 👍😊👍
From what you describe this seems a very nice speaker and on paper you get a lot for your GBP500,- to upgrade to the anniversary model. Though I have to say, when I saw the picture of the cross over, I could not help to envision what Danny from GR research would have to say... Are you sure you showed the better cross over? I could not spot air core coils, but I did see electrolytes from what I thought. My tonal taste for music, I like fast base (within reason I prefer speed over how deep it goes) and I hate sibelence (how do you spell that any way). But other than that my mood often dictates my taste for tonality.
Thank you Hugo. The picture was taken directly from their webpage. I noticed that along with the air core inductors were some iron core ones. Probably not avoidable if they are one the woofer as an air core would be too big 😊👍
Hi Tarun, I saw you have really audiophile equipment and a great room for lessen, can I know why you prefer bookshelf speakers over tower speakers? ✌️🙌
Hi Taren, I am happy to hear you and your family are on the mend. I am interested in these speakers as a tv/2nd system. What do you think? Keeping in mind I usually listen on atc scm 19.
Thank you Stephen. They aren’t at the ATC SCM19 level of clarity. Depending on the sound characteristics you want and the accompanying amplifier, either the 40th Ann Cométe or the Amphion Argon 1 should do nicely as a second system 😊👍
Hello Tarun, quality review as always. I still continue to appreciate that you compare speakers under review to your Proac’s. It give us a base line to how your judging other brands / models. I’m so tired with the two extreme camps out there (objective vs subjective) and like your middle road approach to reviewing. The Triangles might not be the best measuring but that doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy or appreciate them for what they are. My pair of Davis Acoustics Olympia One Masters are very impressive. Not be the best measuring I’m sure but the tweeter and mid-woofer (fantastic mid-woofer) integration is very good - almost coaxial like. Take care, Brian
Thanks Tarun, as you know I have both the Comete's 40th and the R8 with upgraded tubes. I would say you are spot on with your evaluation of the Triangles but I have yet to listen to them with solid state ( I will soon with the Parasound P5 & A23+ combo ) In comparison I have listened to the Genese Trio...less refined and the Borea Bro3...more engaging..more lively...great speaker for the money, loved them ( now gone :-( ) Take care...Alain
Have you reviewed the 40th anniversary Antal ? I have the Borea br08 and now that they are broken in I am starting to really love them. Thinking if upgrading to another level and am wondering if I should stay with Triangle at the price of the new Antals.
@@oluhamilton2121 thanks Olu. The ATC SCM19 is a superior speaker to the Triangle Cométe 40th Ann. It is also more expensive. You need a good quality high powered amp to get the ATCs to sing. Your TFM-35X should do just fine 😊
Great review. I don't think the larger Antal tower speakers would be for me, based on what was described about the Comete. Thank you for keeping me from making an expensive mistake. It's pronounced "comm-ett". The "eh" sound has accent "aigu" at the end of the word.
I think I'm still learning what balance I like. I like the warmth of my wharfedales and I hate the brightness of my monitor audios. Although I've just changed from a bronze 2 to a bronze 100 and I think the 100s are a bit more neutral. So somewhere between warm and neutral I think I lie. When I heard some wharfedale Linton's the vocal clarity was superb and probably the biggest trait I look for. Still learning and unfortunately no Bristol HiFi show again this year
Thank you for review! I have Triangle Comete EZ powered by Pier audio ms 480. I’m very happy with this combination, but have to be honest- I miss the transparency. To my taste bass is enough, trebles too and good timbre balance.
Thank you for the review. I have the non anniversary edition of this speaker. I find it to be a little too bright on top and lacking punch but that might be partly due to my amp (Marantz pm8005)
Hi Spuddy- my opinion is it’s the Marantz that is not completely up to the task. I have the same speaker but use a Hagel H190 and the amp has a heavenly grip on them. Granted, a totally different class of amp, but I thought I’d share. It is also possible that subjectivity accounts here and you would feel just as displeased with my setup. If you have an opportunity to try something delivering more electrical current, try and see what you think.
Hey Tarun,I have been following these speakers for quite some time now,Mainly for their looks & their lively sonic signature and I am glad you reviewed them ..Thanks !
@@HiFiMusicLover Thank you. I appreciate the offer but I shy away from getting viewers personal gear. The amount I have to move things around damage is always a risk.
Another great review. What I really appreciate with your reviews is the lack of of pomposity that so many reviewers seem to have. You have a reviewing style many could learn much from. As for speaker characteristics, really starting to experiment with open baffle, have you experienced open baffle before, if so what's your take on it?
Thank you kindly. I have heard open baffle speakers but not in my home. They normally require a bit a space around them so I need to find one that will work in my room 😊
@@abritishaudiophile7314 a little trick I experimented with in situations where not enough room behind them is placing different materials on the back of the driver's, you can use various thickness of foam etc to kind of attenuate and slow down the rear wave amongst other things to kind of manipulate to different room size within reason, kind of an added layer of fun, lol, or faff depending on how you see it. Almost a little bit like tube rolling in some ways I guess, the product can be altered with various ease. As a family man they are probably not ideal though, kind of a selfish speaker in some ways given the narrow spot of perfection, lol, my eldest always sat in the seat where I had them set up for to be in best position, and the cat despite beforehand favouring a different seat.😂
Hey Tarun. Firstly, I'm so pleased that you are better and your family is well. In terms of tonality, I have an interesting observation: I'm currently listening to some new Buchardt S400 MK II's (run in for a couple of weeks now). What do you think they would sound like with my Hegel H190 Amp? I was concerned that the combination maybe a little on the dull side. I'm finding that they are actually a bit 'bright', especially on average recordings. Still, a lot more experimenting to do but I reckon, yes -I really do like a lush warm sound! :-)
Well you've just bumped up the 2nd hand value of the 1Sc again Tarun 😂 Ive had the Rel T7X around 4 weeks and its just amazing the difference it brings to a stereo system, tried with the studio 100 and now with my Reference 8 and i just love it look forward to your review
Hi Tarun lovely review for lovely speakers! I have listened to the 40th Anniversary Cometes in my place and I really really liked them. So much that I considered buying them. The only thing that I might have missed was some body in the midrange (at least on my 30 m2 room). Since you have also reviewed the Genese Quartet I was wondering if those were as refinded and tonnaly pleasing as the Cometes but would give more body and fullness to the mids due to their much bigger size. Also how was the bass speed and quality compared to the Cometes? I can buy the quartets used at a significantly lower price than the Cometes new so your opinion would be really helpful. Thank you!
Thank you buddy. I feel the 40th Anniversary had a more even tonality and better refinement and clarity over the Quartets. However, my room may be a little too small for the Quartets 😊👍
Hi Tarun. Another great review. love listening to your channgel. you asked what we like. here is mine. The tonality I like is the Spendor A7 powered by the H390 (or 190). Detailed. Warm. High notes rolled off but without sacrificing detail. A Contained sound. doesn't try to impress you. Good sound stage. Makes you pay attention and quite down. unparalleled intimacy. Being a long term exposure and hegel fan myself, i'm wondering. any change you can do a H190, A7, Gaia III review. please please please :-)
Hi Tarun, thank you for this amazing review as always. I'm consider to buy a pair of this 40th Comete to pairing with my new Musical Fidelity M6si, do you think there will be a good match? Thank you so much for your nice work helping us.
I'd like some comments on the pros & cons of horn loaded tweeters. I read an article on the history and physics of horns years ago. Basically it said that the higher the frequency, the more the on axis response is reinforced and the off axis response is attenuated. Also departing from a round horn causes the dispersion pattern to become multilobed & this becomes worse in higher frequencies, so it's ideal that those horns are round. From my experience in PA where horns are common place, I have grown a deep hatred of them because they cause all sorts of tonal effects around a room that are practically impossible to resolve. But, I get the point that it's difficult to get a lot of high frequency response at the power levels used in PA, at a reasonable price point. That said, horns can work decently well in an outdoor setting where the audience is reasonably close to on axis, because the excessive off axis bass just disperses away. But in a room with little to no acoustic controls, it can be a real problem to deal with. I suppose that isn't such an issue for a HiFi listening room tailored to favour a single listening position. However, if the tonal dispersion is too pattern is too varied across the spectrum, you could end up similar issues with friends spread around the room. The worst case scenario I found in PA was a corner stage where the stage monitors (designed for balanced stand mounting) were placed on the floor and pointed directly at the performers. This meant that for the performers to have balanced on axis tonality, the excessive off axis bass was reinforced by the corner surfaces to bounce out into the audience where it made the front of house sound extremely muddy whenever the stage monitors were at a level to be useful for the performers. This situation could be mitigated by not running them at a useful level or offsetting stage EQ so in favour of not muddy the house tonality, which made the stage sound very tinny & metallic. The frustration of this situation is why I have a strong natural hatred of horns now. I guess I have become heavily biased against them and would favour a more balanced tonal dispersion if at all possible. But of course, unbalanced tonal dispersion is exactly the mechanism that HiFi purists exploit when adjusting speaker proximity to walls and toe in to balance tonality for that sweet spot listening position. So I recognise the applications are vastly different & PA does not relate well to HiFi but include it as my experiential background to springboard comments on the pros & cons of horn loading tweeter in a HiFi setting.
Hi Tarun. What with a good deal of well spec'd speakers out recently, I wonder if you might be able to get hold of a pair of Yamaha NS-3000 to review. I mean, the Joseph Audio Pulsars are considered state of the art and not shy at $7000 a pair. I would be interested to hear if you think the Yamahas' asking price of £9K to £10K is justified. Just asking >).
@@abritishaudiophile7314 - Looking forward to it Tarun. Their performance will be the critical factor, as I must say I'm not taken with the aesthetics - clinical NHS look. (I do like a bit of timber to match the timbre!)
Thanks for your review, I rather something with good tone but not shy on the extremes of the spectrum but a little bit forgiving for the bad recordings. My question is neutrality (flat response) equals to musical "organic" or cold presentation . Can I have good tone and depth in soudstage at the same time .Thanks. I hope you can review the entry level Borea BR 08 Tower from Triangle
Sorry to hear about your COVID exposure but glad to hear you have the anti-bodies now and well on the way to a full recovery. Another great review with a nice 360 look around with relevant gears to put things into context with your consistent reference point, the Proacs. My Atlantis stands for the 1SCs look just like yours, and are 27 3/4 inches from top plate to bottom plate without spikes, with spikes they’re 28.5 inches. How tall are yours and do you use spikes with them? The Triangles are very handsome looking, maybe just a tad too tall with the ports below. Have you tried pairing a tube preamp with an SS amp as a way to get the best out of these bookshelf speakers, warmth and control? I haven’t but might try some day.
Well,, if it takes a "creep" to loooooove Triangle speakers,, then here I am,, 🤪😂👍. Speakers for tired audiophiles they are,, 🥰 Iw got my tweeters 80cm from the wall behind the speakers, and got +2 meters to the sidewalls. 2,2meters in between the tweeters and 3meters to the listening position, aaaand ca 2m to the wall behind my head if Im sitting with military style straight back. That doesnt happen soo often,, its more like a slow wrestling match inbetween myself and my two youngest ones, 10 and 12 years old. 🤩🤩 Everything you said about the Cometes fits 99% about my Signatur Theta,s. The only thing that differs, in my listening situation, are the width and depth of the soundstage. Iw got a wide open stage, and very well layered and good depth. The imaging are as you say a tad unlocked, but with DIRAC room correction the wall behind the speakers disapears totaly and the imaging locks, in a realism that are on the edge of scary, still without loosing the warmth, speed and the non tireing but highly detailed treble. You have ansvered three for me very important question,, do they work with the Hegel 190, the Exposure and most important, the Willsenton R8. Thank you soo much my friend 🥰. A Willy R8 it will be in the future. To anybody whos searching for the truth,,ish music played by speakers, I can highly recommend Genelec 8331 -8241-8351 or 8361 with Genelecs SAM room correction. I work with these "monitors" daily, and better sound microscopes doesnt exist today in my not so humble opinion on that matter. 😋 (Iw worked with Genelecs since the late 1980,s, and that can of course make me lean a tad against that brand, 🙄😅) The three first needs a sub if you like to listen to the 20Hz organ in Also Spracht Zarathustra at full "swing",, the 8361 doesnt, in some rooms. Thank you, thank you, thank you Tarun, for speaking understandable English, for not rushing on like you were on fire, for sharing your knowledge, for all the work and time your putting down in the reviews of yours etc etc. Cheers, and all my best wishes goes to you and your family.. 🍻🍻🍻🥰❣️❣️❣️. Iw got Covid two times. Early last year, and it was scary bad. I got super depressed and tired beyond anything Iw experienced before,,😬😥😴. Second time 2 weeks ago, even thou Im dubbel vaxed, and it was like a beautiful summer breeze in comparison with nr1. // Oooops,, almost forgot to tell that Iw/wew got two XTC 12" Edge subs, placed directly behind the "listening sofa", ca1meter from our heads, to fill in for the deepest octave. There will be "better" subs in the future, but the XTC,s are hard to beat, especial price wise if living in Sweden.

That is great. Thank you for sharing your experience 😊👍
Still have mine new in the box, saving up for the amplifier though..not a big fan of tube amps but I've read that these will sound best on tubes.

Thank you for sharing your experiences Robert 😊👍
Hi Tarun, I bought the Comete 40th(blonde sycamore) anniversary a few months ago, I pair them with a Naim uniti atom and a SVS Sub, and I must say I am in Love with these Speakers, even my Wife likes them, both sound and looks. (the finish is just perfekt, very beautiful speakers, integrated nicely in our livingroom)
I think you describe the sound very acurate, romantik, sweet sounding, very smooth sounding, what i Really love about them is the midrage, just sounds so natural, and the best Part is they Sound very good at low Volume.
Thank you for you rewiew, and as always great Job my Friend

I have the Triangle BRO3 and for the money they are fantastic speakers. Very happy with them
Cool 😎
Thank you Mark. I really enjoyed learning about your experiences 😊👍
Glad you and your family are doing well. Thanks for all you do for the audio community.

Thank you Richard. Much appreciated 😊👍
Interesting review of a very good looking speaker, it seems to have a strong family character which is good for a bit of variety.
It is so, and that by design.

We are all doing well, so kind of you 👍😊👍
The 40th Ann Cométe have great tone in the midrange, including with strings.

Hi Tarun, glad to hear your are all recovering from covid. I really like the sound of Triangle speakers and thought the review of the Comet anniversary was very good. To me Triangle have a nice mid range that agrees with me.
Thank you for sharing your experiences Eric 😊👍
I got a pair of the 40th: #288. Simply put, they sound spectacular!

Thank you Wolf. We are doing well. Great to learn about your experiences 😊👍
I have some Comete EX with upgraded crossovers and I really appreciated this review with similar speakers (if of course better drivers). I learned a lot of good tips on placement and it was also interesting to know how good you find ProAC's previous attempt with the SC1
To answer your quesion, having BR08s too I look for the triangle sound, I'm sold they are a great match for my ears. Somewhere in the middle with their own instrumental component they can add to the sound which complements the vast majority of radio and recordings.
Thank you. Much appreciated 👍
What I love about this review is comparing the speaker with a benchmark speaker regardless of the price (people can judge how close these speakers come to perfection) Another thing I love is comparing how different amps power the speakers differently (so people can decide how much they want to spend on an amp).
Thank you Gökhan. Much appreciated. That was my intention 👍😊👍

Which would you say was the better option from the Comete 40, Genese Trio or the KEF R3…
My wife would probably appreciate an answer more than me because it’s driving her mad!
Best wishes

Thank you for sharing your experiences Shan-Jun. It is great that you have speakers/headphones with different characteristics 😊👍

Thank you Ada. I appreciate you sharing 😊👍

Alway great to hear from you my friend. I have hear some impressive demos with the Special 40s. Thank you for sharing 😊👍
Thank Bob. I appreciate the heads up 😊👍
I really believe that people should stop obsessing about perfect technical performance of components with their eyes, and start trusting their ears more.
Thank you RM 😊👍
Great review thank you. I must admit I went from Elac to Klipsch and they are not fatiguing at all. Went from accuracy to a more lively sound and more engaging for me at lower volumes. I know many will disagree but I am not looking back.
Thank you Andrew. Many people enjoy the sound of Klipsch speakers 😊👍
Thank you Christopher. Very kind of you to say. I really enjoyed learning about your experiences 👍😊👍

Well … I am watching this review with the sound going through my Atoll IN100 and the Blonde Sycamore Comètes. (BTW, the pronunciations are ‘koh MET’ and ‘es PREE’ - Francophile here!)
Yes, the 40th Anniversary models are built in France rather than China.
I did purchase the accompanying stands for the Comètes but have not yet done the mass loading, which I am pretty certain will add another level of performance.
Thank you for talking the time to share your experiences 😊👍

Hi Tarun!Great to hear you and family are ok!!Can you explain me wich relationships are between the crossover set up and the tonality and Sound Signature of the speakers??? Thanks and cheers!
Thank you Mailany. Great question. Unfortunately, you can’t consider the crossover in isolation when determining the tonality of a speaker 😊👍

Thank you for the review. I have the non anniversary edition of this speaker. I find it to be a little too bright on top and lacking punch but that might be partly due to my amp (Marantz pm8005)
Thank you. It could be but the 40th Anniversary model is heavily revised 😊👍

Do you think they still make sense in 2024? How do they compare to kef metas or dynaudio evokes in sound profile?

Thank you for sharing your experiences Ken 😊
Hi Rafe. Funny enough, I am planning to review those at some point 😊
@@abritishaudiophile7314 - Looking forward to it Tarun. Their performance will be the critical factor, as I must say I'm not taken with the aesthetics - clinical NHS look. (I do like a bit of timber to match the timbre!)
Excellent review. Are you planning to review the other 40th Anniversary speaker- Triangle Antal?
Thank you. No plans at present but appreciated the suggestion 😊👍
Hi Luis, thank you for sharing. You can certainly have great tone and soundstaging. Those are two reasons why I love my ProAc Response 1SCs 😊👍
@@abritishaudiophile7314 do Pmc speakers have similar sound voicing as the Proac ? thanks again .
@@luislunacortez1929 PMC sound very different to ProAc 😊
@@abritishaudiophile7314 really, in which way?, thanks for your reply.
Thank you buddy. My stands are 24 inch Target R4s. I have sorbothane feet under them. I am hoping to try some hybrid amps with the 1SCs this year 😊👍
Hi. Great review. Please can you tell me which stands are used in your review?
Thank you. Target R4s 🙂
Good stuff! Glad to hear you are on the backside of the covid.
Thank you Paul 😊👍
Well,, if it takes a "creep" to loooooove Triangle speakers,, then here I am,, 🤪😂👍.
Speakers for tired audiophiles they are,, 🥰
Iw got my tweeters 80cm from the wall behind the speakers, and got +2 meters to the sidewalls. 🤩🤩
Everything you said about the Cometes fits 99% about my Signatur Theta,s.
(Iw worked with Genelecs since the late 1980,s, and that can of course make me lean a tad against that brand, 🙄😅)
The three first needs a sub if you like to listen to the 20Hz organ in Also Spracht Zarathustra at full "swing",, the 8361 doesnt, in some rooms.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Tarun, for speaking understandable English, for not rushing on like you were on fire, for sharing your knowledge,
for all the work and time your putting down in the reviews of yours etc etc.
Oooops,, almost forgot to tell that Iw/wew got two XTC 12" Edge subs, placed directly behind the "listening sofa", ca1meter from our heads, to fill in for the deepest octave.
There will be "better" subs in the future, but the XTC,s are hard to beat, especial price wise if living in Sweden.
Great to learn about your experiences Irene. I am very grateful that you took the time to share them. I would also like to thank you for your support. It make doing this so worthwhile 👍🥰👍
My wife got Covid last year before the vaccination program. She was ill for quite a while. We knew at the time there was a fair chance that she was going to catch it. She had stayed with her mum who had contracted Covid in hospital after a hernia operation. Unfortunately, her mum didn’t make it. My wife was with by her bedside for two days at the end. Then had to come home an isolate in a bedroom for 3 and 1/2 weeks from me and our son, quite ill, having just lost her mum. I don’t know how she got through it. She is made of special stuff 👍🙏👍
@@abritishaudiophile7314 I truly feel for your wife and you all Tarun. 😥
Iw been lucky enough to not loose any one to covid, even thou Sweden got struck extremely hard when kids came home fully loaded with Covid from February Winter Holiday Week in Italy and Austria, and we stood 100% unprepaired.
Pffhhh,, tough times it was. 😬
I lost both my parents many years ago and we had time to say all the important things and "see you on the other side" ❤️❤️
I lost my oldest son to suicide some years ago, and that was a similair situation to your wifes,, to stand there totaly helpless and out of reach, unable to help. It took me years to get out of the chock, and Im still on psychofarmaca for the chemichal imbalance that trauma caused. But,, were all different conected in the junktionbox in between our sholders and it is impossible to fully feel another humans suffering. "All" we can be is the best we can be and that have to be enough, or we all will go totaly nuts I truly feel for your wife and you all Tarun. 😥

A dear friend of mine often says; Nothing makes me so happy as to make other people happy. I totaly agree.
I say; Sometimes life fucks up beyond recognition, even thou you have carried it like the last drop of water in the desert.
A simple truth that hits most humans that have lived.
When the "British Audiophile" makes a new flick, its like Little Christmas here, and if a few words from the "admirerers" makes it worth it, Cheers again I say/write. It is of course easier to speak/write when the subject falls straight in to my own field of interest 😅. I do not envy you when you "have to" listen to gear that you dont like 😂. I guess its something like recording an artist or band that I dont like 😂. Anyhoo Tarun. Take care of yourself and your beloved ones. All my hugs and luv to y´all, wonderful humans. 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️
(please remember that English is not my native language, and it is near by impossible to find the right weighted words sometimes, or more than sometimes possibly? I have spent exactly 0 seconds in England or any other "descent" English speaking country, so,, this is what it is. Everything is written with full luv for yall)
@@IrenESorius thank you for your kindness Irene. It is appreciated more than I can express here. I am so sorry to hear about your losses, especially your son. I can think of nothing worse. It is understandable that you didn’t come out of it unscathed 💖💖💖
I believe one of the most important lessons in life is to be aware of the energy we put out in this world. Positivity breeds positivity and the opposite is also unfortunately true. Most of the interactions we have are not with loved ones but fleeting, with strangers. At little human kindness costs nothing but goes a long way. It is great the way we can connect with people across the globe these days and share our passions. Receiving comments of support and encouragement like yours makes doing this so worthwhile.
Oh, and by the way, there is nothing wrong with your English. I am sure many a native speaker would envy how articulate you are 💖👍
@@abritishaudiophile7314 I am sooo with you on positivity breeds positivity Tarun. You reap what you sow most often in life.
It is a true modern miracle that we are able to communicate with people that share our interests from all over the world,, people with different level of knowledge etc etc. I can watch world renown scientists whenever I feel bored or down on YT. I luv that 🥰.
Loosing a child are harder than I can explain, but in the same time it could be way worse. Thank God for modern medicine. 👍🤪👍,,, 😅.
I could be a parent somwhere in the world where theres not enough food and watching my children starve to death, or die from some fixable sickness,, 😰.
I was living and working in Tanzania as a young person, and met living conditions there that formed my way of thinking for life. In the same time I have never met so happy people anywhere else on my many "travels" and places Iw lived in.
Thanks for being a good human Tarun, and a damn good reviewer. Cheers friend,, 🍻😎❤️
