Here is what separates this Audio review channel from the sea of others out there. Reviewing "sound" is so subjective and as he described biased, so many channels will review a piece of gear and at the end of the video you realize they've told you nothing except ... they think it's good. This channel describes the details in such terms that help you understand and you can almost taste what he's describing coming from these speakers in your head. He is very good in how he conveys the important finite specifics that truly make these speakers different from the rest. When you appreciate the finer details in your audio listening, hearing someone like this describe the sound you can expect from this gear shows his ear for sound and knowledge is above the rest of crowd of review channels out there.

I love the way that Tarun ditches the bland descriptions and dives into the nitty-gritty of the sound. I always get a clear picture of what makes speakers sing (or, you know, not sing) without any unnecessary theatrics.
It's a refreshingly honest take that doesn't leave me scratching my head.
    Thank you 😁😁

Well, I bought these, partly influenced by Tarun’s well-crafted review. I auditioned them first. They are warm without being unfocused and crisp without being sibilant. Excellent sound staging and with a 'live' and confident feel. What I especially like about them is that they don't lose coherence at high volumes and/or with complex music like massed instruments or singers. I don't really care what they look like and I'm not going to fuss over how shiny they are - it's the sound I'm interested in. I'd definitely recommend them, especially at the very low price for what you get. Listen first and if you like them, don't hesitate.

As an electrical engineer with experience in audio physics, I should point out the flaw in stating that ribbon / planar drivers move faster than dome drivers. They actually move at the same speed. The two main differences are the resonance break-up frequency and radiating pattern. For soft dome tweeters, their diaphragms begin to harmonically oscillate around ~7-10khz. For aluminum, ~10-15khz, and for Be / diamond, they often breakup beyond the range of human hearing.
The radiating surface beaming effects by far contribute the most to a tweeters sound profile; many ribbons will have a ~13mm horizontal radiating surface, whereas a dome can be twice that width. This allows ribbons to cast a much wider sound field than dome tweeters, which can be more pleasant to some listeners in some rooms compared to dome tweeters.

His ProAcs use smaller dome tweeters, so perhaps he likes wide dispersion.
Also don't many aluminium dome tweeters break up above 20kHz these days? Some over 30kHz.
Certain Beryllium also doesn't seem to break up, it just goes up to over 40kHz and rolls off

    • @supergrissi
      @supergrissi 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I believe he by "fast" means that they, because of their low mass, are fast accelerating, not necessarily faster moving, but that is just me...

    • @ryansemplexyz
      @ryansemplexyz 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@supergrissi no, that would also be incorrect. The mass of air in front of the diaphragm provides an acoustic impedance much, much greater than the inertia of the diaphragm itself, at least when it comes to frequencies and volumes humans can tolerate.

Well that's a great question! Budget so often dictates dream kit, and one man's unobtainium is anothers run off the mill. For me, two particular items were my dream kit one I have, one I don't...
The first was the set of Rotel michi passive pre amp, phono stage and power amp. As an 18 year old Saturday boy in a hifi shop, the build quality and immense control that the pre power combo had driving kef reference 107 speakers was awe inspiring. Having finally got all three after 30 years hunting, they truly do not disappoint.
The second is the neat acoustics ultimatum xls speakers. A friend has them and they are so revealing, with such beautiful deep bass for a stand mount speaker but it's the upwards firing super tweeters that give a superb height to the treble and i have never heard anything like it. They are the only thing to replace my kef reference 105.3 s at some point in the future.

I really need to try a listen to some speakers with such tweeters. I really only have experience with traditional drivers. Those look like winners for the $. It was due mostly to this channel I ended up with the ATC SCM 19s I have, which was spot on review wise.

Ascend Sierra offers good value if you don't mind a "basic" finish. The ribbon tweeter models use RAAL ribbons
Monitor Audio gold 100 uses an AMT. Older versions used an actual ribbon; though MA thought the AMT was better for low distortion

    Thanks!
I'm a long time Quad 12L owner who moved to the Revela 1 some weeks ago partly influenced by your review. I had the 12Ls paired with the Roksan Kandy MKIII Integrated Amp with a discrete Yamaha DAC. Looking to consolidate with an integrated streaming amp for the Revela 1's.
I think it has come down to either the Roksan Attessa Streaming Amp or the NAD M10 V3. I'm slightly leaning towards the Attessa's Class AB (even though it is over 3+ years old) but NAD's got a superior DAC ... but it isn't always about the latest chipset.
Curious what you would advise at this price point (sub €2000) to drive the Revela 1? Listening tastes vary from hard rock and metal to classical.

@@krishsub thank you. I appreciate your support. The Quad Revela 1s are excellent speakers but do require some driving. Not many amps have the power and clarity below €2,000 to do them justice. If you want a warmer presentation the Atoll IN200 Signature is a good place to start. If you can up the budget, try the Exp0sure 3510 and Hegel H190v 😊👍

Thank you Tauren for another great review. Im delighted Quad have such a winner on their hands.
You asked for end game aspirations? I hit 60 this year and am lucky enough to be moving to 'end game' on a couple of my components. Im unbeliebably happy with my Wharfdale Elysian 3 speakers and dont intend to move on from them. Ive made the switch to tube front end married to solid state power via the Mcintosh MA252 hybrid intergrated, and again, Im not sure I want anything more - at this level of fidelity Ive changed from pursuing 'more truth', to wanting more 'romantic warmth and liquidity' and Ive not heard it done better than this amp.
So its just my front end where I'll dream of updates, my auralic g1 sounds much better than it has any rights to, but its very outclassed. Dream combo atm is the G2. 2 streamer like yourself, and I think maybeca hugo tt2, but Ive yet to hear it.
    Have a great day mate.

Another great review. I had a set of these for a home audition. I also had the Dali Rubicon 2’s, had them for a few weeks. I loved the Quads and I liked the warm (for my ears) characteristic’s compared to the Rubicon’s. I almost pulled the trigger and bought a set, I was settled on them. However, much to my wife’s unhappiness I swapped my home office to a much bigger room and I found myself playing the rubicons more and more, I felt the rubicons gave more detail (again , to my ears) . I eventually settled on the Rubicons, but not the 2’s, I did place an order for a set of 2’s, but then a set of Rubicon 6’s came up for sale from my HIFI shop I was using as trade in. But, the Quads were a nice speaker, an almost purchase. I am running a Luxman 507z amp and HiFi Rose 150b pre/streamer.

Note the heavily radiused Revela's cabinets. My DIY work with very large cab edge (3/4 - 1.5" router bits) rounder-overs suggests a distinct HF performance improvement. The wonderful Ellis 1801b with the Hiquphon OW1 tweeter demonstrated this dramatically.

Have had mine for about three months. I agree almost completely but for the negative comments about the upper base. I like the warmth and finde it completely natural. I've been looking for a speaker that can reproduce the sound of high baroque stringed instruments in a natural way, without harshness. The revela 1 does that in a beautiful way. I drive them with a quad artera stereo (140 w in 8 ohm) and I can imagine less power could create less grip, especially in the base. Of course I can imagine even more detailed sound, but probably not at 1700 £. As I'm writing I'm listening to Herreweghes recording of Beethovens 8 on pentatone. The small classical kettle drums played with wooden sticks sounds amazingly real.

so....i decided to buy a pair of Quads after watching and rewatching (several times) tarun's video. have lived with the speakers for only 2 weeks and for whomever cares, these are my impressions: lots of weight and depth in the sound. beautiful wide soundstage. they do sound bigger than they are, and present a very lush, refined, and to a certain extent, 'hi-fi sound' (by that i mean: relaxed and enjoy the music presentation). for me though, they are a bit too warm on the lower mids and color the sound too much making bass attack a bit sluggish when you have a 'presto' or 'allegro' passage in an orchestral/choral work. very top register is also a bit too smoothed out for my taste. i think they sound best with small ensemble music: jazz trios, singer and pianist (lieder repertoire), old school rock (taking away a bit off from the nasty harsh upper register). lingering of notes/tails is long, perhaps a bit too much for my taste, contributing to its sluggish character on fast orchestral music. compared to the ATC SCM11 i just sold...well, the presentation of the Quads is more 'refined', more depth and weight, more dynamics as well, but less detail retrieval than the ATCs and less honest than the ATCs. overall, i prefer the ATCs honesty. I did the test with solo piano music, bach cello suites, solo harpsichord music (bach, d'anglebert, couperin)... yes, it all sounds more "pretty" on the Quads, but less honest. just more makeup, which is not what i'm looking for. I guess the ATC scm19 or something from REVEL (M105 perhaps?), KLH Model 3?? ... are next on my list. as always, thanks tarun for your in depth reviews!

Fabulous as always! I aspire to purchase the KEFs Reference 1 Meta. The best stand mount I may have ever listened to at this point. Another that took me totally by surprise at the Montreal Audiofest and considerably less expensive to the the KEFS, was Yamaha's NS-800A. What a bang for the buck (or pound). Excellent review yet again, As on owner of Dynaudio Evoke 10 + Dynaudio 9S subwoofer combo in a small study, the only loudspeaker in the world I would consider a viable upgrade ("summit speaker") is Dynaudio Contour 20i. For my ears, no other brand gets the same blend of treble detail, bass dynamics and midrange body as the best Dynaudio standmounts.

@@CinemaDemocratica Fair call. But please be aware the low sensitivity is needed to get dynamic sound out of the midbass driver with a high current solid state Class AB amplifier. IAG seem to have a lot of brands to juggle, good to see Quad getting some love again after the recent Wharfdale and Mission releases. I did compare to the Menuet SEs but left it out of the review to focus on speakers that are more likely to be placed in a similar situation. The Meneuts are great in the nearfield but start to loose dynamics when place more than 2m away. The Menuets have a similar tonality to my ProAcs, but not quite as open being smaller speakers than the 1SCs. The Revela 1s are also more open sounding than the Menuet SEs. In summary, I would keep the Menuet SEs for nearfield listening but the Quads are better in larger spaces 😊

Not made a decision yet but I need to audition both speakers. I won't be retiring or selling the 805's, they're a great speaker but will be in another listening room paired to vintage Linn pre and power amp. Its been almost a year since i was blown away by these Revela 1 at NW Audio Show but i am no closer to forgetting that ear opening moment. Genuinely i MUCH preferred their sound to all but everything else at the show other than some very pricey ML Electrostatics (which made Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon as if i hadnt heard it 200 times already). But still, and in all seriousness these little beauts played sweeter with their incoming Quad Platina equipment than some FAR pricier YG Acoustics and Kef Blades on £00000's worth of Naim stuff. They have left a very audible memory imprint that i hope to recapture. I therefore would love a set of Revela 2 on the end of my Icon 845PP and hope that it happens soon!

I've spent the least 3 or so months thinking/believing the Bucharrdt S400 could be the next and last upgrade for me after reading forums and watching many reviewer's go on about them. Then you come in with this!!! Now I'm confused. That being said these quad speaker's I personally find visually unappealing. Then there is the "Darth Vader" speakers you reviewed in a previous video, to me they are just fugly.
I don't have the luxury of having a seperate listening room, so hi-fi equipment needs to be in my living room so i want something i feel is nice to look at and attract looks and questions from guests.
As you said towards the end most people dont know where there hi-fi equipment will take them.... For me I'm pretty sure my next step will take me to the s400's as the general consensus seems they are good i general. Also to me they look so flipping good especially in the rose wood or rust.
