    I just add a length of sprue across the bottom of the fuselage. Trim it to a length that will slightly spread the bottom of the fuselage so that it mates well to the wing. Glue the sprue in place so it doesn’t fall out. After doing this on my kit (and many other kits over the years lol) No putty was required.

      Great tip! Thanks!

      @JJ-cf7nb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spruetherapy. My pleasure. And I should add that I’ll sometimes cheat a bit and before gluing will run masking tape from one wing tip across the top of the fuselage to the other wing tip. This closes smaller gaps by imposing an extra degree or two of dihedral. Not for the purists though! I really enjoy your videos. Great job.

      @@JJ-cf7nb Your trick worked! A bit of sprue and there's no wing root gap. Now we're learning! 😊

    It was a Tamiya YZR500 that I did with my dad in the early 90s that got me into modelling. Always loved their motorcycle kits. They build beautifully and display well. I still have that original model though with the years it is now in need of some restoration. Great videos, keep them coming. You’re doing great.

    Good morning,
    This is a great vid and the answer you could possibly use is to open the fuselage to fill the gap withe sprue.

  • @PeteCourtier

    This is caused by pinching the fuselage together against the cockpit tub. If you don’t do this it’s a perfect fit. I had no problems and no filler needed. Lovely kit.

    • @spruetherapy
      @spruetherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I thought but It does it withough the cockpit tub too. I bought two kits to test. Seems it's the usual Airfix hit or miss. Still, it came out okay in the end!

    I had the problem. I assumed the gap was because the wings needed bending up to the fuselage to create the correct dihedral. Seemed to work, and the angle looked about right.

    Some plasticard along wing roots before wings are added or spread the fuselage slightly with plasticard. Easy fix. Their mk1 has similar issue and needs some shaping but then no filler is required at all if done properly.

    • @spruetherapy
      @spruetherapy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Weirdly I never had any issues with the mk.1 kit. This was a lot worse, I used styrene rod on my 2nd build which sorted the issue for me.

  • @beckersmodels
    @beckersmodels 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ah Airfix. Still unable to bring good quality control in 2022 compared to what Tamiya had down pat by 1992. I always advise new/returning modellers to skip any new or old Airfix 1/72 as their "first kit" and just jump into a 1990's mould (not new stuff!) 1/48 Tamiya single engine fighter. You won't have this sort of problem to stumble over. A relatively easy fix for more advanced modellers, but may stumble up the first timer who then never gets onto their second kit and so forth.
    Great videos btw - recently subbed, keep up the good work! Cheers Chris

    • @spruetherapy
      @spruetherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Chris. It's a funny one, as some of their kits have been pretty good. The Mark 1 Spit was fantastic when I was starting out a little over a year and a half ago. I've quite a few of their kits in the stash but as you say, compared to Tamiya from 20 years ago even, they are lacking a bit! Thanks for the sub! Dan

    • @beckersmodels
      @beckersmodels 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Their main problem is quality control - some kits are good, some aren't. The inconsistency is something you don't get with other manufacturers and that's why I can't recommend them. I only have some of their ancient 1/24's in the stash, plus the 1990's 1/48 Lightning and Spitfire Mk 1, which seem to have better detail, better fit and even better plastic than modern releases. You've come a long way in a year and half Dan, well done and keep going!

    • @PeteCourtier
      @PeteCourtier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beckersmodels This one is good though. I had no problems with the wing root. Just drop in the tub and it’s fine. I don’t usually defend Airfix but I will on this gem of a kit.

      hahah .. You haven't had / built Tamiya's 1/48th Sea Harrier ... It is a dog .. Tamiya ain't perfect .... Also for the price Airfix in recent years have been producing wonderful kits .. Personally .. I don't like "shake the box and out comes a perfect replica" ala Tamiya .... I like the challenge and joy of working on a kit.

  • @ModelMinutes
    @ModelMinutes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm, perhaps it would be better to assemble the wings then glue the two halves into the wings before cementing them together . . . It's not the first time i've heard of this issue but I will certainly have to keep an eye out for it when I do mine

    • @spruetherapy
      @spruetherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought about that too and on my second kit I went that way when dry fitting. Sadly, that method led to the cockpit falling out and having a large gap down the middle of the fuselage. Having said that, some people don't seem to have any issues at all with fit. It seems to be rather inconsistent.

    I am a fan of airfix and spitfires, was excited to get this kit when it was released. However, when building it, I had the same issue as well and had to use some tamiya filler... It still turned out great in the end however for a new kit, airfix should have done abit more of work on it before releasing it

    Glue some styrene strip along the upper wing roots, so that there will be an equal extension.

      Yeah, you certainly fill and sand it. But what I'm trying to help people with is how to avoid needing any filler in the wingroot. Which I think I've nailed now using some extra sprue in the fuselage. I'll post a new vid later.
