  • In this episode of Battlefield Analysis, I examine the Hourglass map rework in Battlefield 2042. This is the map which fundamentally needed it most. Did the team at DICE succeed? Find out inside!

    I'm baffled at how your channel doesn't have any more subscribers. Nowhere else you get analyzes this well done on both maps and Battlefield gameplay elements. You put into words on why something works and doesn't work, and in the latter case on how they can easily improve it point by point. I just really hope DICE watches your incredibly constructive videos. Amazing job Gravity, keep up the great work!

    Would you ever consider doing a deep dive on the movement mechanics in BF games and how they impact map design?
    Zavod from BF4 and Reclaimed in 2042 play very differently - and a huge part of it is the difference in mantle height, grapple hooks, steerable parachutes.
    Would be curious to hear your thoughts on things like movement systems between BF games

    • @GravityBFTV
      @GravityBFTV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      100% this is a topic I am looking to cover in a future video. Movement design and map design are fundamentally linked. The issue is deciding what games to cover and how in-depth, and long, a video like that needs to be.

    • @TheOtherOtherAccount
      @TheOtherOtherAccount 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@GravityBFTV I wonder if one option is doing it by looking at some of the maps that exist in multiple games where movement differs
      Wake island, Karkand, etc. Though that may be too simplistic.
      But it’s absolutely a topic I think about a ton - it really rubbed me the wrong way when the BF dev was tweeting “the sprint speeds are basically the same” when wondering why 2042 was being panned as too fast.
      And it felt so silly.
      No one was talking about sprint speed - we meant the grapple, steerable, parachutes, and wingsuit ON TOP of the sprint.
      Heck, even just compare the BF2 grapple (slowly climb up) against the 2042 grapple.
      One provides the option of verticality, with a tradeoff of hugely vulnerable climb times.
      The other gives you the option of unleashing oppressive verticality for no real downside.
      Even the steerable parachutes alone fundamentally change the impact of tall buildings.
      Older games had jerky parachutes that didn’t let you choose your exact landing spot - so yeeting yourself off a building wasn’t an instant drop on someone and easy kill.
      It was a huge risk.
      Now? Skyscrapers on orbital and Kaleidoscope become these massive objects that allow you to flank and ambush people and vehicles all over the map
      Your analysis of these sorts of topics would be fantastic - I already link to you all the time when people discuss BF.

      @@TheOtherOtherAccount I really appreciate you giving me the shoutouts when you can! Any little bit helps.
      You actually just brought up multiple topics which each warrant their own conversation. With regard to simply "getting from point A to point B on a map" factors like map size, scale, vehicle speed, or sprint speed are important. However, I do not have the capability, nor the technical know-how to dig into game files and accurately measure each. I guess what I am saying is, if i cover this topic, it would be very speculative/subjective based on my understanding and experience of each game. At the end of the day, this might be something I devote a few minutes to in a full review of each game, because it relates more to the experience of that game in particular, rather than a comparison of "this or that" is better for gameplay.

    Considering that Dice REALLY tried to make it clear, that they pretty much maxed out the asset limit on all reworks, what things do you think they should remove to add the cover you suggested?

    • @GravityBFTV
      @GravityBFTV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Assuming that DICE actually hit an asset limit on this map, there are only a handful of things which I realistically would remove for the budget. Id pull all of the new outside defenses on G1 since those are useless anyway. Id pull extraneous assets from some of the skyscraper rooftops. Id pull an entire skyscraper if possible. Id pull a crane or two from the north, and perhaps as many trees, cars, and trucks as I can from in front of the stadium, since its only visible from the air anyway. Speaking of only visible from the air, theoretically they could literally delete everything inside the stadium and leave it an empty shell. That might not be enough, but its all I could imagine repurposing.

    • @fabiovarra3698
      @fabiovarra3698 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do they really hit asset limit or is just an excuse to being lasy?

    • @thebigsam
      @thebigsam 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GravityBFTV They already deleted most assets from inside the Stadium. Most cars and other assets on the parking lot are already low definition if my memory serves me right.
      I don't think you can delete rooftops, those are used for TDM layout. G1 - maybe, but I don't think this would be enough. Maybe you can delete some building entirely, but that would just make aerial combat worse. Maybe specific ones could work, but I am no pilot to judge which ones are not needed

    • @thebigsam
      @thebigsam 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fabiovarra3698 It could be both. I don't care either way, it's a thought experiment first and foremost. Dice did say they are open to further changes to some maps, but I couldn't imagine they would be as significant as Gravity wants

    Personally I enjoy the rework (bar the stadium’s removal, but it’ll possibly come back later so time will tell there).
    It keeps the large nature of Hourglass as a vehicle map, but the additions make it also a decent map for infantry. The string of objectives from the tunnels to the highway and then city offer a fun arena for infantry combat and the linear nature of it reminds me of Suez from BF1, Panzerstorm from BFV, but especially the middle few objectives and highway parts of BF4’s Flood Zone.
    It’s not the flashiest rework but it did its job in improving Hourglass
    Great analysis and I patiently await your other 2042 videos

  • @shawnyscore6988
    @shawnyscore6988 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It is better but I am very disappointed because I really thought they would go all in and keep the best for last. I was hoping for them to just simple squeeze the map, bringing the stadium and building inwards. I like the underground tunnel, the atmosphere, but I miss the stadium and the top building flags. This map can be most beautiful and I saw a ton of potential. Now it lost it's unique big scale vehicle identity. I was hoping for a rework ala Breakaway with added urban elements. Maybe some indoor fighting like in Shanguai. It went from worst map 2nd or 3rd worst map. Kaleidoscope is now my least favorite. Great video once again and I hope Dice watches and listens to your content

      They said in the podcast that they couldn’t put the stadium in there due to gen4 limitations (ps4, xbone) for memory and performance.

    • @shawnyscore6988
      @shawnyscore6988 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheOtherOtherAccount Yeah maybe but they could have made a layout for next gen and old gen like they did with other maps. They coud have cut off open spaces and background buildings in order to gain assets. Breakaway is the best example. Great rework. Look at WZ2. ok there is no destruction and not as near as many particle or weather effects but geeze there is a lot of detail in those maps. So im not completely buying the asset explanation for next gen.
