  • This episode we are really making some progress and seeing Nigel's face appear again! But as usual it is not without it's issues, and this time, it might be our worst one yet... :(
As referenced in the video, the sound deadening and acoustic lining we used is from ‪@carbuilders1‬ (Car Builders): www.carbuilders.com.au
Thanks for watching, see you on the next one!

Hi guys - I have enormous respect and admiration for you. Originally it was just about loving your videos of your travels and adventures around Aus, but since you’ve had Nigel my respect and admiration has been elevated enormously by what you are having to do with Nigel- doing everything yourself . It would probably be easier to buy a new vehicle, or recon parts but to do everything engineering from scratch is incredible. Hope you get everything sorted soon and back on the road doing what you truly love. ❤

Drill a bunch of small very shallow holes along the crack with a tiny bit deeper one at the end of the crack . Make sure the water level is below the crack , heat the area a very tiny bit with a torch .Find a old cast iron junk part ,say from a local garage , grind or cut it to a bit cast iron shavings . Now mix a tiny little bit of the shavings into some high temp JB WELD mix well and pack it well into the crack , let cure a couple of days . There another thing you can do is braze the crack up . On my 1948 Chevy 6 cast iron exhaust manifold was pitted and warped really bad , so that’s what I did was to heat the manifold up, then fill the pits and low spots up with braze , then let it cool slowly , and used a flat file clean things . Knock on wood that was about 3 years ago , no leaks . You would have to pull the freeze plug and rocker arm , then drill holes at the end of the cracks , this to keep the crank from spreading . Then prepare the crack as I said above , heat area slowly , then a with small brazing rod fill the crack with braze . Let cool slow as possible. Nice job , the Landi looks great .

Thank for the advice Paul! We ended up taking it to a machine shop and thankfully they have welded it up for us. Fingers crossed it holds!

It took me ten years of weekends with a big push at the end with help from mechanics. It was worth it. You guys are great and Nigel will bring a lot of joy to all kinds of folks. Invest in security and buy a tracker though.

A stump when new, if you are drilling it out with a half diameter drill bit,
Will usually spin out while drilling.
Replace bolt not with soft cheap bolts but high tensile quality bolts,
    and tbey wont break.
Water bolts...can leak if you dont let silicon go tacky before screwing in.
remember that if you disturb a bolt, it probably would leak after that.
Make sure you dont pressurise the cap and system for a week roughly.
let silicon dry fully. Cheers, Andrew
    Great video, thankyou.

Pumpkin, my '82 VW Vanagon came to me with a rewelded head. The head lasted about 40K miles at which point I had my mechanic put in a rebuilt engine. Here's hoping that your weld holds up better than mine, and that you can replace the head before it trashes the whole engine.
Been great to watch your progress. Your videos are always a joy.

Roofing tar paint is really good for covering bolts and screws that rust.

All the best going forward. I would investigate chemical welding, there are some great products out there. Also, I hope that puny air filter is temporary. No good for dusty roads and will be awfully noisy. I'd try to source an original oil bath filter, Rover knew what they were up against in the original design.
