Are you secretly Everyone loves Raymond ?
Thanks for the great instructions. Especially the acceptable tolerances.
Imagine doing all the work and then not having power.

    Tip: Hold the brushes.
Place a socket (of the right size) and then put the brushes in.
Then quickly remove the socket, et Voila.
I used this tip for rebuilding a VW gold starter.
Of course I did it without the 'perfect' size socket too.
    And the brushes went 'bing'.
Still looking for one of them.

Do you know how long that bolt is for the starter that goes into the crankcase...having a hard time tracking one down

The last movement prove what i presume: you don’t grease the bearing of the Rotor! Not on the carbonside even the gearboxsite. Thats makes the „yelling“ … and also i presume that the rough Noise indicates that the Centergear is NOT in the Center of the Planetos. The Idleamps of those Starters shut be araound 25 Ampére +/-5 Amps after the Service and the shut Sound like a Turbine and not that rought like this Fellow.
Even you not swop the Buschings. I do Starters since 40 years and i recoment: don’t do this Job not without a Lathe. Only exeption: under Fire in the Desert ;-)

Do you have to disconnect the battery before you take it out?

Do you know what brand of grease you used?

Uh, followed your video, now my starter motor spins backwards. Indexes are aligned perfectly... what is happening? What could have made the direction of the motor change? I am 100% confident the body is aligned properly.

What you did was reverse your battery terminals most likely.

@RYANINBODEN1547 no, then the starter relay wouldn’t work. The previous owner had used the wrong brush kit and installed the magnet body off by 90 degrees to bodge the repair. When it put it back together correctly, but with the brush kit off by 90 degrees from where it had been forced, it spun backwards
