    This is way clearer than any of MOTU's tutorials. I don't know why they can't come up with some simple tutorials like this!

    To add an Instrument Track and its associated MIDI track in one step, choose: Right-click->Add Track->Instruments with Options. (Or better yet: use the Command-Shift-Option-I key command). Then make sure to check the “Add 1 MIDI track for each instrument”, and the “Add new track(s) to a new folder” option. (These options will remain in effect after you check them the first time.)
    This is a much better method than the way shown in the video. I would never work that way. That method requires two steps. This method does it all in one step and keeps everything together in a handy folder package. Command-Shift-Option-I, and you're done. Very fast!
    The separate-MIDI-track-for-Instrument-Tracks thing is unique to DP and can be confusing to new users coming from other DAWs. I personally don’t like it, but many other users like the feature. It has its advantages, but no need to go into that here. However, if you do it the way I suggest, it is much more efficient and will be much more comfortable for the new user.
    I wish the video would have shown this more efficient way of working with Instrument Tracks, but thank you for creating an otherwise very useful video for beginners!
    (The next thing I would have shown the user is how to change the Track Color so that the Bass and Drums tracks are different colors. Something for future videos?)

    Very disappointing that Motu didn't consider joining the midi and instrument tracks as one. It can get so messy when you have to add a midi track to each instrument track. All other major DAWs have instrument and Midi track in one, it's so much cleaner and easier to work with.

    • @ThomasFostermusicproduction
      @ThomasFostermusicproduction  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's exactly what I see, a reason why I could never work with this program. I hope Motu changes that with the next update!

      That’s the way DP has worked from the beginning. Once you learn it, you’ll find it’s actually quite efficient.

      This is an area where people get confused about DP. MOTU gets it right with MIDI tracks using virtual (VST) plugs. If you are going to have the ability to use multiple chunks (sequences) in each project, then you need a way for each seq or chunk to coordinate with your ensemble setup (the instruments that are the same with each sequence and those that are different). This is where the virtual mixer comes into play. Let's say you have 16 VST plugs loaded on your virtual mixer. You have 7 chunks with different musical content, but each chunk uses the same instruments. Instead of have 7 separate sequences each running 16 plugs (for a total of 112 VST plugs), you simply connect each MIDI channel's output to the 16 plugs in the virtual mixer. Bam! This is what allows DP to be so effective with Film/TV scoring. Setting up the VM can be complicated as you get into large setups using multiple outs, but once you understand MIDI/Audio and AUX/Busing setups in DP you will be rewarded with an incredible work flow.

    Here's a productivity tip to all (well most) DAW vendors: DON'T make it compulsory to save the project when creating a new one!!! Just don't. It stifles creativity and prevents a particular way of using DAWs, as scratch pads, for those times you're not really sure whether or not you're committed to make a full-blown project or not: When you just want to doodle around. This right here, at 30 secs in the video, is exactly what I'm referring to. (Just nitpicking on this particilar thing. The rest of this DAW looks totally rad.)

    Hallo Thomas, danke fuer das Video! Ich habe ein CASIO CTK-3200 als MIDI device angeschlossen, obwohl die Software es erkennt, hoere ich nichts wenn ich spiele. Du hast im Video gesagt, dass ich das Schlagzeug hoeren sollte. Zuerst hatte ich ASIOall drivers verwendet. Aber das war problematisch mit VLC player, jetzt verwende ich Windows driver. Kannst du mir weiterhelfen? Dankeschoen!

    • @ThomasFostermusicproduction

      Oh du schreibst du hast das Casino als MIDI Devise angeschlossen.
      Das würde bedeuten du möchtest nur die Tastatur her nehmen, aber mit den Sound von digital performer arbeiten. Wenn das wirklich so ist, haben die Einstellungen des Audio Treiber es nichts damit zu tun, dann geht es um die mit die Einstellungen!

    Thanks Foster, this is really a great video. What I don't like is MOTU's decision to stick to ancient way of MIDI recording. So if I need to use 16 virtual instruments in a song, that will be 32 tracks? That's the annoying part of the program. Hope they would scrap this useless steps pretty soon.

    I'm absolutely losing my mind because no matter how much I double click the tempo number, nothing happens and I can't change the tempo despite having followed every step to get there (which isn't even that many). What am I doing wrong?!?!

      Click on the small down arrow next to the tempo number and make sure you have it on tempo slider instead of conductor track.
