Fred Eichler signature series BEAR recurve take down review

  • Well this is a video I am probably going to regret but I don't think with a 30inch draw that I should be reviewing short bows. I never like them after the initial WOW of having a new bow in my hands. I also go on rants about ILF and how all bows should have that system and for now I am sticking to that opinion. If you want to tell me about your experience with this bow, please leave a comment below and thanks for your support!

    I just got done shooting my 2018 Fred Bear Takedown. ‘A’ handle and #1 limbs making it a 56 AMO! This is my hunting set up for the past 6 seasons. I absolutely love this bow! Yes a little ‘old school’ design but I experience no stacking at my 29 inch draw length and it draws oh so smooth and it is oh so quiet! Anyway I always love your videos Mick and thanks for your straightforward honesty! I also agree with you Fred Eichler is a Trad Legend!

    Thanks for the review. Bowhunters and archers are all built different. Yes some bows stack more than others also not always a bad thing as you get a cleaner release that way.. The grip is very important to me for comfort and repeatable grip. You can shoot just as good with a cheap bow vs expensive bows. All about form and repeatability.. My black hunter longbow shoots just as well as my more expensive bows and I'm 29 inch or so draw length

    You're onto it dude. Here in Australia it just gets a whole lot worse. I just jumped onto my dealer's website and the riser alone is exactly $1,000 and the separate limbs are $700. That is a lot of expense for a bow (as you say), that has a crappy looking old archaic limb fitting that looks like it is out of a lucky dip. From the same dealer, I recently bought a lovely 21" riser that is from Win and Win. It is truly beautiful, that was only $240. I bought a cheap pair of glass/maple limbs for only $200. One of the guys at our club who has a black widow, Predator bow and some new bow from the States that cost him over $3,000 said (when he shot my bow), that my cheap Chinese limbs are equally as smooth as his top bows. Because my bow is ILF, I have now ordered a beautiful pair of carbon/bamboo limbs for it that only cost around $300. Apparently these will shoot even better. The only person that would buy this bow would be somebody who hates Chinese products (Philip from Archery addiction on YT said a lot of archers do on the States), and is a FB fanboy.

    • @ArcheryGeek

      I think that is bit of generalizing :) - there is a lot of love for our American boyers but if we hate chinese bows and arrows and parts, we sure do buy a lot of them. I see a lot of affordable bows at the range.

    Just received mine and have yet to shoot it but do think it needs a grip - maybe tape or one of the R Core grips... I understand your gripe about not being ILF, though if you are looking for ultimate customisation you aren't going for a Bear Archery bow in the first place. I would recommend looking at the Border Archery limbs if you are looking for more aggressive limbs.
    For me, this is going to be a really good and light takedown bow that will be used for lightweight expeditions.

    I think the limb pockets look better with the wooden riser. The old-school look suits it better. I had both. But man I sold the Fred version because the grip isn't great, with my 60lb limbs it's really noticeable. Nice review as always.

    Im a one piece traditional Bear bow type, and sometimes, I do wish I could transport it in a backpack, and that's
    What Fred Bear take down system was designed for, transportability. I agree on the handle riser. All Fred Bear bows are known for great risers with awesome locater grips, except for the mag riser version. What happened there, I do wonder.

      I've had a Satori for about 4 years now, started with black max 2.0 35# then 40#, current limbs are Samick R3 carbon foam.
      I dig it and have no intention to shoot anything else.
      I've heard there is a Chinese knockoff version of the bow too for half the price.

      Why not buy the next set of limbs at the higher poundage. I am not a trad bow owner. So I can not speak from experience. As a compound owner I loved the grip on this riser. Since it has come out I cannot stop thinking about it. A set of 40 pound limbs now to learn with and later a set of 50nor 55 pound limbs down the road. I am sure bear did not cut corners. Eichler would have walked away from. The project.

    This bow is geared towards the hunter and not the target shooter. I don't know why they don't come out with a target oriented bow as there are so many fred bear enthusiasts that shoot a lot of 3d tournaments.

    • @DamonHowattHunter
      @DamonHowattHunter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They used to make a C riser which was much longer than the B riser. This Fred Eichler edition is modeled on there A riser platform which is the shortest of the series. They recently started making the #2 limbs again. For awhile there they only had #1 & #3 limb length options. I think reintroducing the C riser would be an appealing option for target shooters.

    You bought a bow that is not for you. It doesn’t make sense to me to buy a 17” riser for around 30” DL and on top of that with Bear takedown system who’s anything but ILF. I would have loved to see a Bear T/D vs Eichler T/D. Comparing it with ILF is worthless imo. Two different animals all together. Thank you for the review though - it shows that the riser and limbs are working perfect.

      Thanks for your comment. I didn’t buy the bow it was borrowed for the review. I’ve never tried bear takedown so it was about educating myself. Fred has about a 30 inch draw. Agree with you though 17 inch handles are not for me. Disagree that takedowns should not be compared. Regardless I love that you watched and commented and appreciate you!!

    • @old2470
      @old2470 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArcheryGeek Fred Bear was shooting B riser not A riser, even though the argument can be made that B riser + #1 limbs is making the same bow with A riser + #3 limbs. Interesting fact was that ILF system is actually born as idea of tiller change not poundage. A Bear T/D system provides a solid limb in the pocket without lateral movement because the tiller bolt is too thin compared with the limb cutout. This can be made as argument when comparing takedown systems. The chances to lose your limbs when unstrung with an ILF are not 0. Good video in the end. Eichler went for the compound shooters switching to “traditional” when he decided to go for thin metal-only grip.

    Surprised with the speed. I’m not that big on speed and typically use a heavier arrow. Certainly don’t mind a few extra feet per second though. I want a b mag riser down the road and don’t see enough extra value in the Eichler. This riser was basically Eichler building his own custom bow that fit him.

The kinetic honoric in 40 lbs gives me a 45 lbs roughly at my 29 inch draw. I shoot black eagle outlaw cut to 31 inches 500 spine with 200 gr up front . Total arrow weight 448 gr with 3 three inch feathers.. This is on the black elk 21 inch riser also the kinetics are rated on a 25 inch riser...

    30 inches is a pretty standard draw length for an adult male. Most archery manufacturers seem to be unaware of how many people have draws longer than 28". I draw over 32" and pretty much all trad bows are unsuitable.

    • @ArcheryGeek
      @ArcheryGeek  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As the population does get taller the 28" AMO is getting to be a little out dated for men. As far as trad bows, I would think you could easily get a really nice Longbow that is over 64" and do really good with it. I just reviewed the Spyder XL that is a 64" recurve from Archerypast.com and it was goo for my 30 inch draw.

      @@ArcheryGeek A while ago I tried a Ragim Wolf longbow (68"), I quite enjoyed it.
      I have a Black Sheep Nova, which is very similar to the Spyder XL. It is okay, but I much prefer my 23" White Feather Lark riser with long limbs. Both of these bows are limited by the old school round grips, I much prefer and group better having a flat surface to push my pressure point into. At some point I might customise both of these grips.
      When I want accuracy and a smooth shot, nothing beats a 72" target bow, they just take a bit longer to get setup.

    Bow doesn’t make sense. The reason people want these types of bows is for the versatility, and low maintenance. Versatility to use different brands of limbs if some limb maker gets some crazy new design that gives 10 more FPS and it’s ILF you can slap them on your ILF riser. Love Bear, but modularity is what people want.

  • @chrisbowman2030

    The grip is horrible. It's supposed to be like a modern compound grip, but it's not. Modern Compound grips are more of a sqare shape with definited edges for repeatable hand placement. This one is round so it creates a nice hot spot in your palm without repeatability. Compound grips are slim to counter torque wich can be a problem with today's high let off bows. But most of the time your holding weight is maybe around 10 pounds at full draw. With a trad bow all the draw weight is at the end. And all this pressure goes into your hand with this tini tiny grip. Bear offers an option for an overmolded plastic grip for their compound bows, why not for this riser? I don't get it.
