I just checked an called UAV forecast and it state you’re good to fly a drone at lake meridith. Great video and glad you didn’t get any rattlers
Thanks for watching! We are very happy to have not seen any rattlers!
We caution you on drone apps! We have found huge errors such as this. Dave re-checked his skyvector aeronautical chart (used by FAA) and it shows Lake Meredith as controlled airspace (national park) meaning you CANNOT FLY! This is frustrating for drone users when apps give the incorrect info. The best advice we can share is always ASSUME all state parks, National parks and national recreation areas managed by the National Park service are off limits! If an app tells you that you can fly in these areas without a permit….. that is a HUGE red flag! As a part 107 drone pilot, We could have lost our license for flying at Lake Meredith…. That is why Dave made such a big deal about it.
Violating these guidelines can lead to hefty penalties, including a maximum fine of $5,000 and up to six months in jail. Not to mention, park rangers have the authority to confiscate your drone and any associated gear.
Side note! If you know how to read an aeronautical chart…. There are a few arms on lake Meredith where you can fly. It so small that it’s not even worth trying. If we had to guess…. I’d bet these areas are on private land🤷♀️
Pretty serious business! Dave does TONS of research. We hate to be the bearer of bad news but want to share our knowledge. If you are interested we could send you a picture of the aeronautical chart showing the results.
Most Sincerely
The adVANture crew
When we first moved to the area, in 1970, my Dad loaded us in the car and we drove to Lake Meredith, swim suits in hand. When we got there, my Dad said, "My gosh, we will need a helicopter to get down to the water!" There is a VERY nice, huge swimming area at the stilling basin, below the dam, which is free.
We call them “Goatheads” too. Pesky little stickers. We were at Lake Meredith last fall very close to the space you were in. Our grandson caught his first fish there.
Local here. I didn't know they put a shop in at the main boat ramp. Used to have a good sized full service Marina, fish house, and about 150 boat slips for long term docking. It all got removed 10 or so years ago do to very low water levels.
I grew up boating, swimming and sailing on Lake Meredith. Itis a wonderful lake. In the "old days" on a Sunday, there would be dozens of sailboats racing, on a course set up and buoyed, sailboats op to 60 feet. Also water skiers and scuba diving and lots of fishing. The Marina was removed about ten years ago, when the water level dropped to 25 feet. That marina used to be a big attraction, and I had two boats in slips there, a cruiser, for when the wind wasn't blowing, and my 22 foot miniature ocean-racer sailboat, for when the wind IS blowing. Meredith is known as one of the best sailing lakes in the US. It can be very treacherous, as summer storms can come up very quickly with winds to 60-70 mph.
I live in Amarillo which is about 45 miles south of lake Meredith and there’s places there where you can camp next to the shore of the lake where you can use a boat or other water craft or just swim I highly recommend it to anyone who is traveling through the Texas panhandle who wants a travel break
Pileated woodpecker is one of my favorite birds. Pelicans, eagles, osprey... Of course hummers.... So many great birds!!!!!
agree 100 % with your list!!
In about 2012, backpacker magazine, put out an article stating that rattlesnakes had began to evolve. They do not most of the time rattle before striking according to their findings. That’s why you have to keep your eyes peeled wide-open. An area where I am at doing maintenance by the Deschutes River Canyon, I have noticed this to be true. The rattlesnakes don’t bother to rattle has a warning. Everybody be careful.
I just came upon you two! Amazing photograph! You all are nice and very informative! I live in Amarillo and at one time my Dad was a member of Lake Meredith Harbor. I know after my mom passed we found out that it was not paid. Completely. My Dad bought a premium spot and it was easy to sale for back taxes. You all made me wish I still had it and had a cabin on it. lol. I felt like I walking along with you. Thank you so very much and glad you loved our area! Have you been to Palo Duro Canyon. Just south of Amarillo! The second largest Canyon in USA.
We live in Amarillo, but used to live on the rim at Palo Duro Canyon. Our vet recommended a rattlesnake venom vaccination for our dog. We didn't even know that was a thing!
Great review! I live 8 minutes from Meredith
Great horned owl, African gray parrot, and hummingbirds
+David Lane OWLS!!!! Photographing a owl is on my bucketlist! I love that you don’t see them that easily… it makes it so special when you do! I think my mom had an African grey parrot when we were kids… I remember it broke its leg and was in a cast. And of course hummingbirds! When I was researching road runners I read that they eat hummingbirds. No need for that Mr road runner!
My favorite bird is the Redtail Hawk. That is the bird that makes the screaming noise that Hollywood always plays when they show a Bald Eagle in flight. Bald Eagles actually make a little tootle noise. I heard them once when I was visiting a refuge in Oregon.
+Willa R I like hawks too! I can pick out an eagle just by the sound…. I usually hear them before I can see them!
Eagles, owls & vultures when they soar gracefully in the air. @ 25:37 We call them sand spurs in Florida
Wow, it's been years since I've seen a walking stick!!!
Me too!
Guys I witnessed the roadrunner attack against a rattlesnake down at a Texas State Park called caprock canyon State Park about 150 miles south of your location. That park has the state bison herd. Check it.
That must have been a sight to see! Im kinda jealous. We noted that park for our next visit.
Those stickers are called sand spurs, some people call them sand burrs. They are the bane of our existence here. (I'm from Pampa, about 40 miles away.) Thanks for the video, enjoyed it.
Hate those sand spurs!!
Goatheads
we locals call the stickers goatheads too
My favorite birds here in the desert Southwest are:
1) Burrowing Owls - I love looking for them in the Spring as I drive to work. The parents pop out of their burrows with their chicks. So cute!
2) White Egrets - just watching them fly in for a landing in the farmers' fields...so majestic!
3) Red Tailed Hawks - I watched one chase a gopher across a road and catch it. Amazing!
4) Roadrunners - way cool birds!
+Deb Zaragoza I think I’m going to travel around with you! Your list of birds sound amaxing! I also like sand hill cranes and pelicans
Carrie
Good info once again.
We have the Roadrunners on our property! We had one that made friends with our cat. It would walk with her out in the yard ! Stay on the porch with her and peck on the widow to have her outside. We watch the parents teach the young to hunt also. Truly enjoyable !!
Thanks, guys. I was thinking of stopping there overnight on my way out west. I'll be sure to add it to this list of okay places. 👍
@25:26 - Roodle’s Review! Of course you treat him like a member of your family because he is. Have I been missing these? A very important feature of any thorough campground review is the dog’s perspective. Seeing the roadrunner was especially nice, too! ☮️❤️🐾
We occasionally give Roodles review...... I think we will try to do more of these in the future! Roadrunners are so fun to watch....some are very curious! We had one jump up on the hood of the van and look at us inside the van!!
We stayed at the Fritches Fortress campground there on the way back from Utah. GREAT SPOT.
We stayed at that campground a few years ago when a massive storm blew through. All tents and portable pop-up shade structures were destroyed. We even had to move the van because the wind was so bad. BEAUTUFUL VIEWS!!
I had a dog that once got stickers on each foot at the same time. Talk about stopping fast !!!!
Ouch! poor guy!
Bald eagles, hawlks, owls, and hummingbirds are my fav. So glad we don’t have rattlesnakes right where I live , they are way south of us. We have big black rat snakes. Harmless and very useful for moles &voles , mice
That campsite is the total package! So happy you shared the info about the snakes! Being from the east coast we don’t always consider these things.
Exactly! Just don't ask me about copperheads or water moccasins.... these snakes scare me! I know very little about them.
Us locals call those "grass burrs" or "sticker burrs". Nasty little buggers! My wife's Shih Tzu had a knack for finding them and rolling around in them. It's so much fun to pull dozens of them out of a fluffy little dog!
As for the wind, any Texan will tell you that the only thing between the Panhandle and the North Pole is a barbed wire fence! And btw, "Panhandle" is the only proper term to describe the area you were in.
Thanks for the info! That sounds AWFUL with your Shih Tzu! We have a razer comb that you can get at a beauty supply store. When it comes to the sticker or burr it just cuts it out. We have had to use this plenty of times.
We love that Recreation Area.
I love Cardinals & Blue Jays.
Oh we loved seeing a cardinal around christmas time a few years ago when we were in Sedona. It hung around for a few days.
We camped there a year ago. We stayed just down the hill from where you were at. it was a great spot. We opted for a spot with water and electricity. We stayed for a week and explored the area.
Thats sounds perfect! We only had a few days to spend there.
Hey Guys! We were just there last week! It sure was beautiful but unfortunately the showers were already closed for winter - bummer! ;-) Thanks for sharing!!
+TerryX2Explore oh bummer! I didn’t know they closed them! Were the bathrooms closed too?
@@oneadVANtureatatime Yea, all closed up! Was looking forward to a shower…. 😳
Thanks, another informative video with beautiful views. Be safe.
I would camp there Just to look for snakes🐍 😁.
The winds in that area are as strong as some of the category 1 hurricanes we see in the South.
Always a thumbs up 👍
JG..... really! Just look for snakes! Do you catch them?
@oneadVANtureatatime just pictures, I usually don't handle them unless I need to move them off the road. I know all the dangerous ones, they have to get off the road on their own.
I live here in the Southern California Mojave Desert region, and I've done a TON of exploring in the deserts..and I've only come across maybe 2-3 Rattlesnakes in my time. That does mean they aren't there, or wern't close. All of the Rattlesnakes I've come across DID NOT RATTLE when I was very close to them. I read somewhere that they are evolving to not rattle, because the ones that rattle get killed by humans...so slowly, the ones that rattle are being bread-out to ones that don't rattle much. Just like you were saying, you must understand the temperature ranges and where they might be during certain times of the year, and be ready.
Nice campground. Have a great day!
Thanks, you too!
I encounter walking sticks while camping in PA also. That's a nice park!
Roadrunners are my heroes! Talk about a super power😂
Thank you for taking us along! Another beautiful video! I'd love to stay here a couple days❤
If you prepare for the wind.... this is an amazing spot! Tenters might not agree.
Thanks guys for info. Stay safe!
Hey guys, glad to see your having fun.
We are currently in New Mexico and loving it! Slow Trek to arizona
I just discovered you guys tonight ! Great videos with a lot of really good information and you guys are so nice !
You need booties for Roodle and cowboy boots for yourselves. Protection against stickers and rattle snakes
+Alberta Girl At Heart WELCOME!! My husband used to do a lot of gold hunting with a metal detector in California. He’s seen his fair share of rattlesnakes and used to wear snake boots!
Roodle has socks and boots! I was so close to putting them on him. We are heading to Arizona for the winter and he will be wearing his boots until he gets familiar with the cacti again. Last time in the desert he stepped on EVERY cactus 🌵 thankfully he had his shoes on.
Great video love your photos etc just fyi all the windmills are actually wind turbines they produce energy they do not mill anything😊
I loved the sunset crickets/coyotes scene. Lovely!
Puffins are Numero Uno. I will die on this hill 😂😂😂😂😂
+Gray and Grumpy we’ll having seen puffins this summer…. I have to agree…. THEY ARE PRETTY COOL!
Happy Thanksgiving, where er you are!🦃
Nice video. I grew up in Fritch in the 50's and 60's. As stated by others here, we called them "goat heads" and we threw them at each other and stick them on their back so they can't reach them. When we got home from outside we had to sit on the porch and remove all the stickers. The weather is so unpredictable there. Snow storms,, strong winds, tornados, hot summers, and dust storms. After saying that, I wouldn't trade those times for anything. It sure beat growing up in a city environment. Happy travels.
Wanna see Bald Eagles? ALASKA! (Or British Columbia, Alberta, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon. Me: I'd love to see a California Condor...still pretty rare, I think. Roadrunners? Very cool! As always, your videos are wonderful...informative, so well photographed and video'd...thanks so much!
+Robert Gedzelman we saw a condor in Arizona! It was AWESOME! One of my main reasons to go to Alaska is to see the eagles 🦅 and maybe a few bears!
We were driving along westward from Glennallen returning to Anchorage. On our way, either near Mendeltna or Nelchina, we saw a 2-year old (? very young ?) moose cow, just standing there next to the road. We came within 8 feet of it in our car; she just stood there, kind of lonely like. She was BIG! My sister-in-law was thrilled; we took pictures, but knew NOT to get out of the car. She just remained in place, looking at us while we spoke to her softly, (using endearing terms), and she didn't seem to be upset at all. What a treat! If you travel to Alaska, you WILL see wildlife. When the salmon run, the bears will be a-plenty. For one day/night, we stayed in Copper Center..and the Copper river ran right behind our lodgings...but we didn't see a single bear, so maybe when we were there (first week of July) the salmon weren't running as much, AND there was no one fishing along the river that we could see...still a treat. Nevertheless, I'd suggest you keep Roodle on leash for his safety. If you do go into the Alaskan bush, bring a wide-brimmed hat, mosquito netting and repellent - you WILL need these items! We saw many locals just dealing with the mosquitoes...you could see bug bites on their arms and lower legs, and the locals just seemed to accept the situation. Once we walked on a glacier: NO BUGS at all!!! But as soon as we returned to the bush greenery, holy moly! @@oneadVANtureatatime
We really enjoyed this video. Looks like a lovely place to relax. Thank you for your “things to know” wrap up’s. They are so helpful. We love to boondock like you guys in places like you show. Our rig isn’t as nimble as yours.
Glad you enjoyed it! We hope to pass along as much helpful info as we can!
OMG, Dave! A roadrunner! Watch out for Acme anvils and coyotes on rocket skates!
Your video just showed up on my feed today. We live on a cliff overlooking Lake Meredith for 10 years and luckily have only seen 2 rattlesnakes….both were on our deck. You are correct, no drones allowed. We do have beautiful sunsets. The stickers are sand burrs. Sanford Yake use to have a large marina with many large house boats but everything was removed when the lake level dropped so low. The lake is a water resource for 11 cities and it is on the way down again. In 2014 the level was 20 something feet which put the end of the lake near Fritch Fortress. We barely could launch a boat at 1 ramp. If you come back again, you might want to visit the Flint Quarry. There are a lot of Indian artifacts & history of the Indians that lived in the area. It is ran by the NPS and is on the west end of the lake. The turn off is on the road to Amarillo a few miles out of Fritch.
Another lovely, scenic video!! And you really caught the animal, night sounds.
Roodle has to be one of the smartest dogs on the planet 😄.
I was really struck, this video, with the drastic transition in geography as you move across the continent. It's been a very eventful year and a great journey. With more to come!! 🛣
Take care guys and safe travels!! 🥰
One night an owl hooted from the shade structure just outside the van! And the crickets were very loud!....but nice to hear! It really has been quite the year! We have been feeling homesick and the mountains of New Mexico have been making us feel right at home!
I guess this has been asked and answered but does Roodle tolerate booties? If so, goathead burr issues can be minimized. I pity the poor guy! Yes, Roadrunners are amazing and surprisingly big too. What a great campground! Thanks for another great video.
+Bill Sprague yes, Roodle has socks and booties! He does really well with both. I was VERY close to putting them on him. He will be wearing them in the desert this year until he gets used to the cacti again.
Great video guys. The wedding photos were fantastic and they were lucky to have you do their pictures. Stay safe and enjoy New Mexico. I am so ready to head west. Pet Roodle for us. ❤
We are currently camped out in New Mexico and loving it! Looking forward to seeing you guys in Arizona!
Eagles are #1 ( we see them in Southeast Oklahoma)
Hummingbirds #2
3 and 4 are blue and red birds
Eagles are magnificent!! I am looking forward to Alaska! I keep seeing pictures of giant eagles and lots of them! We do see eagles almost everywhere we go! Did you know that road runners eat hummingbirds...... that's just not right!
@@oneadVANtureatatime in our fall hiking videos you will see an Eagle at Sardis Lake...
Thankyou for the great info on the snakes.!
Any time!
I can't believe the amenities at this free campground. Great find. Thanks for the info on rattlesnakes as well!
Like the covers on picnic tables!
Great video.
You were literally 28 miles from me! Those “stickers” are called goat-heads…it might as well be the state plant 😂
+No_Worries_Van I don’t like your state plant😂😂😂 so that we were so close and didn’t get to meet!
FYI, stickers (sand spers) when you go to remove them wet your fingers (spit works great). They won't hurt or stick in your fingers as you pull the out.❤😊
+Ben Demby thanks for the tip!
I wish you would see you fishing more....
Dave LOVES fishing but It’s just to expensive to buy a fishing license in every state!
Thank you both for your dedication to perfection -loved the music also ❌⭕❌⭕, Iris & Little One 👋🐾🙏
Glad you enjoyed it
Great area....free campground with water, dump and hot showers...cant beat that!!! Weather in that area is crazy. We were in the Canyon Tx area, rolled in it was in the 70s and windy an hour later we were in a blizzard
Exciting and terrifying! The wind is crazy....hence the wind turbines!
That place looks great, hard to find places like that in Texas, plus garbage and showers! Our favorite bird is the loon too. Ravens and Owls are high up on our list.
We have so many birds that we like! Owls are high on the list! I (carrie) also love pelicans, sand hill cranes, and hummingbirds.
You know you were only 26 miles away from Dogg and us when you drove past Vernon Texas.
Bummer! Sorry to have missed you guys!
AS always, another nice spot to log in the memory bank for when in the area...Thanks for sharing, stay safe and be well on your way west.....
Thanks 👍We are currently in New Mexico at an amazing free campground! We were treated to rain, beautiful skies and a rainbow yesterday!
I have wanted to stay there when passing through but just stayed at the travel center off the 40 in Amarillo. Next time I will definitely check it out and ride the turkey creek trail. Showers are always a plus
Much better than the travel center! We just learned that they shutoff the showers for winter.
Sand spurs, the most vicious little buggers you will ever encounter. Hope you never, ever get one in your foot. They are in Florida, too. I’m sorry Roodle experienced that. 😞
+Susan Jackson we are not a fan of sand spurs! We almost put Roodles shoes on!
OMG!!! One would have to be out of their mind to camp at Lake Meredith!!! Now at one time it was pretty nice. That was until they began sending much of its water down south!
I remember a time when in an area there called Bugbee Canyon actually had this stuff called "water" in it with creatures called "fish"!
Lv it. Local
Raven, Sage Hen, Hummingbird......
Great video! BTW what drone are you using?
I have not been keeping up on the issue of filming in national parks. I am woefully behind! Have they finally relaxed the restrictive rules that required permits and lots of $$?
+Kirsten Strobel it’s a complicated grey area🤷♀️
I'm going to assume you've never seen a SHOEBILL STORK.
😊
45 Claims the sound of the Windmills can give you Cancer!
hmmmmm...there are frequency therapies.
Interesting spot for a practical stop. ✌️❤️🚐
I know it wouldn't be "natural,' but I wish shade trees would have been planted with solar water pumps to keep them alive during drought and extreme temperatures. It isn't too late, so how about it?
Glad that we don’t have those snakes in Europe😅!
Not seeing any rattlers is a good stay! It did look very windy. My least favorite type of weather. I don't blame Roodle for giving that campground a thumbs down. Those goat head stickers are so painful. Nasty nasty things.
we are happy to NOT have seen any snakes. I almost put roodles shoes on..... He DEFINETLY was not a fan of the goat heads!
Those are sandburs. Get some dog boots for him to keep from sticking his foot...and do not go barefoot definitely.
yes, they suck! We have boots for Roodle but he cannot wear them all the time. We all HATE them!
Did you see Wile E the Coyote?
+Michael Taylor no but we were looking!
we call them sand burrs... they suck
we all agree! THEY SUCK!!
