- Lake Meredeth National Recreation Area - Free Camping in Texas Panhandle
On the way home from the South Dakota/Wyoming trip, the Two Tired Teachers stopped at Fritch Fortress part of the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, which is about 40 miles north of Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle.
Fritch Fortress camping area does not have hook ups, but in the rather small camping area, there are flush toilets, potable water, a dump station, and trash pickups with trash cans at each site. When the Two Tired Teachers were there in late September, 2020, the campsites were free.
Several campgrounds at lake Meredith do have hook ups. They are run by an outside vendors, and we do not know how much they charge.
The campsites at Fritch Fortress are not exactly level. Remember they are free. You pull up to a site and park at the road on asphalt. Some of the sites are more level than others.
You may be wondering why the Two Tired Teachers stopped again after they reached their home state. Keep in mind that Texas is a big state. Lake Meredith is in the Panhandle and we are at the geographic center of Texas. We were still 400 miles from home when we stopped at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.
The flint that the Native Americans found in what is now the Panhandle of Texas has been found throughout the United States. The area around Lake Meredith was a major trade area due in a large part to the flint. The flint quarries can be seen to this day.
Meredith National Recreation Area is used quite a bit by the locals. We've seen cars of people come out for a picnic.
The town of Fritch does have a decent size grocery store, a hardware store, and gasoline. It you are at Meredith National Recreation Area and need supplies, Fritch is close and it is a good place to stop.
Side note: if you happen to be in Dumas and are ready to stop for the day, Texhoma Park is a free place to stay. It has hook ups, a dump station, and potable water. Again, it is FREE!
What a great way to end an exciting trip! Some days to relax before getting home! I love your style of travel.
We drove fairly hard for a couple of days, and we needed down time. It was a great place to stop.

Great video. We enjoy watching you two.
Thank you so much!
What a great review - we save every one of your reviews so if we’re in the area we can stop in -
Thank you so much for telling us that.
Been wanting to go walleye fishing there.
I hear the fishery rivals northern lakes.
We fished a little and had no luck. Maybe next time.
I spent the first 18 years of my life in Fritch! Spent a lot of time fishing that lake once it was built. Your campground was on my list for my trip in 2020 until the virus cancelled it. I hope you enjoy the area as much as I did in my younger days. I know it's nice to be home planning that next adventure.
How cool! It seems like a great town.
We have missed you you haven’t put a video out in a while glad to see this one come out love the details be safe stay healthy keep camping
We have videos every Thursday and inspirations every third Sunday.
How about trails to ride.?
We didn't see any trails.
Great video!! How many days can you stay in a row, before you have to move?
Thank you...
I don't remember how long you can stay, but it seems to usually be 14 days.
@@TwoTiredTeachers ok thank you. ❤🚐
Great video! I hadn't heard of this place, so very informative! Glad you both had a great trip and got to see some awesome stuff! Looking forward to more videos :)
Thank you so very much!
I was wondering what you all were doing on the road the past week (!!) until you mentioned this was September of last year!
Last week we were at home, just at home. LOL
I saw you two as I was leaving Caprock Canyons State Park this afternoon. Y'all were getting out of your rig at the dump station and waved at me. I thought that was you two, I wish I would have stopped and said hi!
We would have loved to have met you. We stayed in an equestrian site because the water and electric sites were full.
It was a beautiful evening Sunday. I was in the Little Red Tent campground. I'm a subscriber, so keep putting out these great videos, and safe travels ladies. I'll be sure to say hi next time I see you! 😃
@@abbyhendershot5559 Please do. We love meeting subscribers.
You’re in my neck of the woods now! I live in Plainview we haven’t used our trailer yet still have a few things to get. Glad to see you back in God’s country.
We make our way to the Amarillo area sometimes.
Hope you guys survived the events from last week w/o incident.
We were without electricity one night, but we had no problems. We had water throughout, and we had electricity except for that one night.
Do u need a reservation?
No. It's first come.
