  • Growing Japanese maples expand quickly once healthy. To create great bonsai it is important to prune these back in the middle of spring. Understanding which parts are strong or weak, and where to leave more of fewer leaves is important for the next phase of Japanese maple bonsai development.

      Hiya Jelle thanx for another great video. I have a question about a couple of supermarket Acers I bought 2 months ago. They were the best of a new delivery and are now 40 cms high n branching nicely. Should I prune them now or leave n do later, if at all? ✌️Gaye

      @@gayefanner731 Great question. I am actually editing a video on growing acers from seedlings. There are three main routes: Train into bonsai from the beginning (Slow, yet very small wounds/scars), shaping a trunk and letting sacrifice branches ticken the trunk (Faster, but with many scars) or letting the trunk grow fat, then chop, en let the trunk grow out again, cut back a little higher etc. All three options have pros and cons!

      Great answer! I have another consideration, I’m 68 tomorrow, running out of time are we all. Yes in a way I agree to some extent it’s about the journey, but we really need to address the question of the destination...God has blessed you with a good brain, keep an open mind 🙏✝️

      Have several different ones: Sharpes Pygmy, Deshojo, Lace Leaf, etc. Styling, wiring v guy wires (pro/con), and the various soil mixtures for them, evergreens, and flowering bonsai. Oh, and hemlock and cork bark elms.

      Not sure I love them. They are all over my plants. Making holes and nest etc. But.. Who am I to kill them off for being in the wrong plant? The harm they do is not threatening the overall health of the tree so I generally let them be :).
      Thanks!!

      Hi, thank you, I am aware of neem oil. I have had some leaf burning incidents, and now work with soap and garlic, it is in one of my other videos. But somehow this year the aphids are quite bad. Normally I add my garlic and have peace for the first half of spring.

      Hi Eeealmo, last year I rooted cuttings of my Arakawa maple with over 50% rooting using a very simple technique. I think it is partially related to getting the right ime to take the cuttings... Next week Tuesday I hope to have finalize my editing and release the video on what I do exactly!

    Hi Jelle, I am newbie for japanese maple. May I have your opinion? I have problem of dried leaves tip.
    at begining , leaes tip dry little bit but then wider in the following weeks untul the leaves become brown and crisp and falling . I try to prune all leaves. then new leaves bud come. but dry again after leaves are green, and repeat again.. I am in tropical country. temperrature range 24-30 C. soil used pumice, akadama, pine bark and , a bit ogf organic fertilize soil. I can say soil have good drainage and airation. watering everyday to get moist soil. I tried : not to have direct sunlight, avoid wind.
    What are some possible causees of this?
    thanks alot.

    • @GrowingBonsai
      @GrowingBonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rumble, dry tips are typically the result of some problems with the roots: Overfertilized and/or tried out (Or a dense, wet rootball). Also, when you use foliar fertilizer this can happen, where the fertilizer accumulates at the tip of the leaf, killing the cells there. If it really is only the tips, then normally it is NOT sub damage or fungal causing it.

      Hey Andrei, I am actually in Germany, but near the city of Enschede. As the moment I have no rooted cuttings to give away;, BUT I have taken a whole bunch of them and would be happy to let you have one. I have sufficient Deshojo in my garden, thank you.
      In my growing bed I have a bunch of 3 year old seedlings from Arakawa trees, several of which I expect to grow corkbark. Once I know which get cork, I would be happy to share.
