One thing about Gabriel what's just so well done by Olyphant is that exasperated look whenever his henchmen fuck up. That "how the hell did I end up with these guys" look.
Weirdly, the car launching into the air after hitting the toll booth is something that's actually happened. I saw footage of it while working in TV news about a decade ago, and thought, "Well, I guess Die Hard WASN'T stretching the truth there."
Yeah I remember when it came out people didn't like it and I never understood why, it's great it shows John struggling with a modern world and the modern world struggling to stop an old school action hero. When has a film that says f*** it lets make this fun to watch a bad thing?
31:00 Thank you. I was a Sr. Concept Artist on this movie!! It was my first Union job! I concepted the action scenes! Thanks for watching it!! Spent months working on the designs and planning for that movie. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It was a nice stroll thru memory lane.
Damn. So awesome. To be honest, this is one of those very very rare action movies in which every action set piece is fantastic. The action in this movie gave me Cameron's True Lies vibe.
Congratulations on a job well done. Yes there were some "outlandish" set pieces, but people seem to forget that there was also a ton of good old-fashioned stunt work. It's funny, but for all the crazy stuff that went on, my favorite stunt was when McClane rolls that guy down the stairs in an office chair at a full sprint.
@@Johnny_Socko There was no character CGI here. I was on set watching stunt rehearsals for the elevator shaft scene. I was floored by what these talented pros do.
I love the chemistry and banter between Bruce Willis and Justin Long:) He does become more superhuman in this, where in the first he was more real, human, and mortal. But I love it all, including Kevin Smith:)
That was my thing, I really liked this movie, especially because Im a big Justin Long fan, so that was a great casting job to bring his needed levity to the back and forth between him and Bruce, but once a much older John McClane is hanging with ONE ARM off an F-35, that's when things get a bit satire-ish at that point. I think had the fighter jet gotten destroyed by their own overzealousness without John doing the crazy stunts to evade it, that would've been a lot more realistic (even with John jumping out of a vehicle going at least 100 in a tunnel, even THAT I can sort of live with). The first three Die Hards have some super-human aspects as well, but most are still in the realm of possibility for the most part (the famous elevator shaft slip was a stunt gone wrong, so there you go)
I saw this movie in theaters by myself on a weekday. They should’ve released the unrated version in theaters IMO. Also McClane somehow fires a dozen-plus shots from an 8-shot pistol but heck it, it’s a lot of fun
Why would they give McClane an 8-shot SIG? NYPD don't use that. And yeah...they don't use the Beretta 92F either, but that became some what of a "hero gun" for actions stars in the 80s and 90s.
Regarding the next movie, "A Good Day To Die Hard" (Die Hard 5), when Jeremy Jahns was doing a retrospective review of "Unbreakable," he said "Of course, we all know that Bruce Willis actually IS invincible in real life. I mean, he made THIS movie (shows a poster for "A Good Day To Die Hard"), and he STILL gets work. He IS unbreakable."
As a someone who grew up watching the Die Hard films with my dad, I would put this and Die Hard with a Vengeance close together for my second film in the series. The scene when they are in the car and have "it makes you that guy speech" is my favorite bit in the film. I love that John is a aging "hero" from a analog era in a digital era that he knows nothing about. It does that having a sidekick that is the complete opposite of you very well imo.
Timothy's greatest achievement is Justified. He got nearly every actor from Deadwood a part in this and the best ensemble of character actors you've ever seen. And you won't believe how fast he can pull a gun. With the dry humour it's perfect.

@Hey, I hope you're doing okay. Goes 1, 3, and 4 for me. I really like the hacking aspect for sure, and it is a very realistic premise as an idea, no question. The 5th one could've been salvaged by going back closer to its roots instead of trying to upstage this one with an older John McClane. I like 2 more than 5, but neither are nearly as good as the other 3. Still a great series though, no matter how you slice it.
@Hey, I hope you're doing okay. Yep, nailed it. Too often in the 5th one you felt like McClane was his son's sidekick, and that can't happen when the movie is about McClane, not his kid
This movie can't compare to the previous ones, especially the 1st. Yet, it's so enjoyable, I had tons of fun while watching it in the theater. To some extent it's a self parody/homage, and it definitely felt like a massive gift to the fans.
A lot of fun for sure. Regardless of the lack of realism, there was enough of a good back and forth there between Bruce and Justin to sustain the film in the non action moments, and the main premise is a pretty scary and realistic one for sure. Very symbolic too
the annoying thing about the Unrated cut is that a lot of McClane's one-liners were either altered or omitted entirely. For example @13:43 Unrated version: Matt: You just killed a helicopter with a car! McClane: (something about car crash statistics) PG-13 version: Matt: You just killed a helicopter with a car! McClane: I was outta bullets. There are several more that were changed, but that one is like nails on a chalkboard to me the most haha
Director Len Wiseman also directed the first two Underworld films, the Total Recall remake and I, Frankenstein. Justin Long also shines in Dodgeball and Jeepers Creepers. Bruce Willis is also great in Tears of the Sun, The Whole Nine Yards, The Whole Ten Yards, Red, Red 2 and Sin City. Maggie Q is also in Balls of Fury and Priest
Timothy Olyphant in real life is a funny, down to Earth guy.He would appear on Conan O'Brians show alot, because the 2 of of them are close friends in real life.
This movie is kind of underrated. I remember on "film geek" sites people didn't like this. But in retrospect, it does a lot of things well. (The entire fight scene with Maggie Q is pretty creative.) I think maybe my biggest critique is that the aesthetic doesn't quite feel like Die Hard, with the color grading being a little more slick and stylized. That doesn't make it a bad movie, just a bit out-of-step with the rest of the franchise. ... I also wonder if maybe they could've had John McClane be more naturally integrated into the central conflict. Perhaps they could've made his relationship with the Justin Long character more personal by having Long be the acquainted with McClane's daughter, instead of that random other person we never see again.
If you like the Die Hard series, if you haven't watched it try the Lethal Weapon series with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. A good cop buddy series with humor linking action scenes,,,
Other Bruce Willis movies to check out: Blind Date, The Last Boy Scout, Hudson Hawk, Death Becomes Her, Striking Distance, 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element, The Jackal, Armageddon, The Sixth Sense, The Whole Nine Yards, Unbreakable, Tears of the Sun, Sin City, Surrogates, RED & RED 2
The last Die Hard movie they did was pretty good (A Good Day to Die Hard). How this one had his daughter in it the next one has his son in it. They were supposed to make one more with Bruce Willis that was supposed to be a prequel to the Die Hard series but Bruce’s retirement from acting due to his his diagnosis of aphasia. I love the callback to the two Agent Johnson’s from the first one that were useless.
TBR and Samantha I love the channel and content alot, never miss a reaction. Plz skip a good day to die hard. You guys are doing an amazing job, keep up the great work. 😃👍
Thanks for the great reaction. Die Hard 1 and this one are my favorite Die Hard's. Try some or all of these BW movies, great entertainment: 16 blocks, Looper, Hostage, Red, Red 2, and Mercury Rising.
This movie is really fun. The only part I wish had not been in there was the fighter plan sequence. It was a bit much. Everything else was “action movie “ believable.
It's tough to pinpoint just how this movie works so well It is so over the top ridiculous (on so many occasions), but the comedy balances everything out so well. It's not my favorite of the franchise (not even close), but it's a fitting way to end the franchise (I never saw the last one).
Havent seen the vid yet but i think this is underrated tbh. As a die hard film its kinda meh but as a action film i enjoy it. Expecially the 18 rated cut.
Agree - this movie starts pushing McClane into "Superman" mode (which the 5th movie went all-in on), but on its own merits is still a lot of fun with a great villain. I've tried watching the 5th one a couple of times and it just does nothing for me - it has some great spectacle and some very creative cinematography, but the story is just completely flat.
One of the best action movies ever made! Action like this, well done, more down to earth is more enjoyable to me than those over the top CGI laden scenes we see in sci-fi or comic book based features, they did a phenomal job on this one, great reaction!
If you do decide to check out A Good Day to Die Hard, watch the theatrical version. The only difference I can remember between the 2 is that the unrated version cut Mary Elizabeth Winstead from the movie, for whatever reason.
The theatrical cut of 4 is the better one too. The director's version just adds cg blood and a few lame dubbed swears while altering some scenes for the worse
I think Tim Olyphant is sadly under-rated as an actor. Always loved him since watching him as Seth Bullock in Deadwood. It's probably a difficult series to react to but would love it if you guys ever got round to it.
"John, you are Timex in digital age..." - Thomas Gabriel (rip) Yep, that's my favourite line.😆 Anyway great reaction: you two always make my day. Thank you.😊
An interesting observation (well, it was interesting to me, at least...) ; With every movie, the venue of the movie gets larger (From building, to airport, to city, to entire country... It goes international in #5...) Had they made a #6, I have no doubt it would have somehow gone interplanetary...
Maybe I'm just old school, but as enjoyable as the 3rd installment was, I still go back and rewatch the original most often. That simple formula of John alone against a gang of terrorists (barefoot no less) in Nakatomi Plaza won't ever be replicated. Don't get me wrong, Die Hard with a Vengeance is an awesome film in its own right, and definitely my second favorite, but the first one with John vs Hans is an easy watch for me :)
yeah the first die hard had the action thriller vibe where he is hiding around. die hard 2 was a race against time...die hard 3 is like riddle game...tbh they each had their own vibe
Everyone does the first Die Hard, some do the second, but y'all are the only channel on which I've noticed the third and fourth. Awesome job! 👍 My third favourite Die Hard movie overall, but probably my favourite cast of any of them.
I may be wrong but i thought that the acrobatic character was also seen. in Star Wars Phantom Menace as Darth Mall, but Bruce's comment" Is the circus in town" was a reference to Ray Parks appearance in X-Men as The Road Loved your review
This was the first thing I ever saw Timothy Olyphant in, so for me this cemented the kind of character he plays in my mind. Justified and Santa Clarita Diet are on my list of to-watch things, though.
Sounds like people have told you not to bother with DH5, but honestly it's not that bad. I still think it's the good, fun, violence we know and love from Die Hard. Even if you don't watch it on the channel, it's still worth watching. :)
If an algorithm were written to make a movie that featured every trope of a Die Hard movie but felt as little like a Die Hard movie as possible, this would be the result.
It certainly looks like an attempt to keep John McClane relevant in a post-True Lies world. Including a harrier sequence was almost too on-the-nose. A little too "Try Hard" if you will....
Think this one gets a bit of flack but i find it more rewatchable than the second. Also feels like one of the last movies to go hard with practical squibs and bullet impacts during action which i appreciate big time. the McClane-erisms are also pretty fun in this one : D
Never understood why this got so much hate, back in the day you couldn't make this premise up, it's too good! People say this isn't Die Hard... it is EXACTLY Die Hard... hard-boiled old school cop in over their heads, fumbling to just barely de-escalate the situation. I loved that you two viewed it, that was a(nother) fun viewing with you two, so THANK you for that :) And to repeat another commenter, Whole Nine Yards would make another fun Bruce outing.
mostly overlooked is McClanes daughter here, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, she's in some good movies and great in them, in the thing prequel for an example
Great review!!! HAve never seen the extended version of this movie, so just may have to find it now and add to my Bruce Willis collection. Since you watched the first 4 "Die Hard" movies, you might as well watch the 5th movie, after all that is the very same thing everyone said about "Rocky 5". However, must agree that "Die HArd 5" sits in the center of Sucksville!!!! The person that plays John MacClain's SON just was not very believeable, but you might as well watch it. Also, probably already mentioned somewhere in the comments, you definitely MUST watch "War Games" for it is a 1980s movie that deals pretty much with this same type of scenario of someone HACKING into a computer and almost starting a Thermo Nuclear War and it is during an era when home computers were just coming into existence/being a part of everyday living.
Die Hard 5 actually had a really good director (IMO) in John Moore. What it didn't have was a script that was worthy of the Die Hard franchise. It was just so generic. And changing the location to Russia (presumably for budgetary reasons) also did it no favors. Again, IMO! Totally agree about War Games, I really wish more people would react to that one.

Timothy Olyphant who plays the main villain in Die Hard 4 was in Scream 2 in 1997 and Hitman in 2007 and more recently in tv show Justified.
the annoying thing about the Unrated cut is that a lot of McClane's one-liners were either altered or omitted entirely.
For example @13:43
Unrated version:
Matt: You just killed a helicopter with a car!
McClane: (something about car crash statistics)
PG-13 version:
Matt: You just killed a helicopter with a car!
You guys should react to…
"Death Becomes Her" (1992)
It's one of Bruce Willis best performances.
🎥🍿
This film particularly is very underrated. I love this one.
This is easily my second favorite Die Hard film of the franchise. Thanks for the reaction!
I think a great tech flick gone wrong is, "Enemy of the State" IT has Will Smith and Gene Hackman. You will love it.
“They’re not dolls!” - I laughed so hard!!
Timothy Olyphant in real life is a funny, down to Earth guy.He would appear on Conan O'Brians show alot, because the 2 of of them are close friends in real life.
This is my second favorite Die Hard after the original! It's a good July 4th movie! Keep them comming!
We will do our best to keep them coming! Thanks for the support!
This movie is kind of underrated. I remember on "film geek" sites people didn't like this. But in retrospect, it does a lot of things well. (The entire fight scene with Maggie Q is pretty creative.)
I think maybe my biggest critique is that the aesthetic doesn't quite feel like Die Hard, with the color grading being a little more slick and stylized.
No one’s going to react to these movies and do a great job….so you’re doing it.
That’s what makes you ‘that guy’ 👍🏼
If you like the Die Hard series, if you haven't watched it try the Lethal Weapon series with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. A good cop buddy series with humor linking action scenes,,,
The Lethal Weapon movies are great! At least the first three.
Other Bruce Willis movies to check out:
Blind Date, The Last Boy Scout, Hudson Hawk, Death Becomes Her, Striking Distance, 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element, The Jackal, Armageddon, The Sixth Sense, The Whole Nine Yards, Unbreakable, Tears of the Sun, Sin City, Surrogates, RED & RED 2
Yes! So many good ones! I love them.
All of that and Disneys The Kid from 2000
Yes steer them away from die hard 5 ty. What about looper?
Haha they should watch 5th element...wanna see their reaction on the over the top style
In the Uk the film was known as Die Hard 4.0 which is more appropriate with the computer element to the film.
Notice how many times the FBI Director character said "Now!" 😅
The last Die Hard movie they did was pretty good (A Good Day to Die Hard).
"The Girl Next Door" is a classic with that villain in it. Please put it on the list!
Love that movie.
That was my introduction to Timothy when that movie came out, and he was instantly one of my favorite actors.
@@redfox3334 same
Scream 2 introduced me to him. Really good actor
Classic? it's a Risky Business knock off, I thought the movie was watchable but far from being a classic.
It's tough to pinpoint just how this movie works so well
It is so over the top ridiculous (on so many occasions), but the comedy balances everything out so well.
It's not my favorite of the franchise (not even close), but it's a fitting way to end the franchise (I never saw the last one).
Yeah good for you that last one was TERRIBLE.
@@Fatherofheroesandheroines the läst ones is just a normal today action movie ( take the money and run movie) now feeling, no heart, nothing
Thanks for the reaction! While it may be controversial this is my 2nd favorite Die Hard movie (who can argue the original??) Great job ya'll!!
Havent seen the vid yet but i think this is underrated tbh. As a die hard film its kinda meh but as a action film i enjoy it. Expecially the 18 rated cut.
Some really solid action scenes and stunts in this movie!
So glad to see your reactions. This is such a fun movie to watch. The chemistry between everyone was good. And 1,2 and 4 had great villians.
A Good Day to Diehard is a terrible movie. I saw it in the theaters. Just my opinion.
8:16, you jumped out of you skin when that truck crashed into the car! Lol!
I think Tim Olyphant is sadly under-rated as an actor. Always loved him since watching him as Seth Bullock in Deadwood. It's probably a difficult series to react to but would love it if you guys ever got round to it.
He kicks ass in Justified!
"John, you are Timex in digital age..."
- Thomas Gabriel (rip)
Yep, that's my favourite line.😆
Anyway great reaction: you two always make my day. Thank you.😊
An interesting observation (well, it was interesting to me, at least...) ; With every movie, the venue of the movie gets larger (From building, to airport, to city, to entire country... It goes international in #5...) Had they made a #6, I have no doubt it would have somehow gone interplanetary...
Die Hard 2025. The Day the Aliens Fucked Up.
"Yippie Ki-yay Alien Motherfuckers."
UFO blows up.
(Now I'm sad we'll never get it.)
One of the greatest stuntmen of all time is in this movie. Cyril Raffaelli (the hamster guy) 😆😆
The 1st one and this one are my 1 & 1a 😎
You might like Timothy in Hitman (2007).
Everyone does the first Die Hard, some do the second, but y'all are the only channel on which I've noticed the third and fourth. Awesome job! 👍
My third favourite Die Hard movie overall, but probably my favourite cast of any of them.
The action in this movie is one of the greatest in all of the genre
the French guy is Cyril raffaeli from the film District 13,amazing parkour and club basement fight.
I nearly stopped watching when you said the 3rd was best, but I like and respect you so I just managed to stay on 🤣. 3rd one is fabulous.
Bruce will always be one of my fav actors.
*Blown Away* (1994)
With Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones
Thank you for the recommendation!
My ranking is definitely the same as yours. Which is why I love your takes. 3, 1, 4, 2 and we are never speaking of, nor watching 5.
I may be wrong but i thought that the acrobatic character was also seen. in Star Wars Phantom Menace as Darth Mall, but Bruce's comment" Is the circus in town" was a reference to Ray Parks appearance in X-Men as The Road
Loved your review
Toad not road
Sorry for mispelling
GREAT movie, terrific review!
Great to see you guys!!!
Great to see you too!
5:50 So nice with old Arnold. The Terminator
I don't know which is my favorite: 3 or 4. Glad you guys liked 'em both.
She is also in one of the Final Destination movies.
This is my favorite die hard movie , justin long as a hacker and a side kick was super cool to see
I totally agree with tuition ranking lol! I did love the banter with Samuel L J though.
If an algorithm were written to make a movie that featured every trope of a Die Hard movie but felt as little like a Die Hard movie as possible, this would be the result.
The first bad guy you need to watch in a film called District 13 just to show what he can really do it's amazing
24:29 FUN FACT: That handgun used by the henchman in this scene is the actual prop used by Bruce Willis in the second and third "Die Hard" movies.
34:38 Mickey in Scream 2, A Man Apart, and The Girl Next Door are some roles Timothy Olyphant has played a villain.
I need to rewatch this. I haven’t seen it since the cinema.
I will say that the action in this movie feels more like True Lies than Die Hard.
It certainly looks like an attempt to keep John McClane relevant in a post-True Lies world. Including a harrier sequence was almost too on-the-nose. A little too "Try Hard" if you will....
@@chrisleebowers Ironic given that Die Hard with a Vengeance came out after True Lies.
The original is my favorite, but this is a very close second. Great recation.
Think this one gets a bit of flack but i find it more rewatchable than the second. Also feels like one of the last movies to go hard with practical squibs and bullet impacts during action which i appreciate big time. the McClane-erisms are also pretty fun in this one : D
@@wantutosigh1117 the blood yeah but everything else was poppin irl
Left work early, on a Friday to see this in the theater!! I mean why not, Right??
Great reaction 🤣
Thanks guys. Always a pleasure. ( videos)
This one is close to my heart cause it got filmed in my home city.
One of my fav action movies of all time.
Waw! Great movie! Congrats from Brazil 🇧🇷👏.
Never understood why this got so much hate, back in the day you couldn't make this premise up, it's too good! People say this isn't Die Hard... it is EXACTLY Die Hard... hard-boiled old school cop in over their heads, fumbling to just barely de-escalate the situation. I loved that you two viewed it, that was a(nother) fun viewing with you two, so THANK you for that :)
And to repeat another commenter, Whole Nine Yards would make another fun Bruce outing.
It's also not as well written or directed as the previous movies. For me it was the beginning of Willis's decline.
2:23 I agree with the sentiment. Always check if someone screwed with your system
Bruce Willis is awesome in Unbreakable (and it's later sequels)!
Another commonality is that each installment is centered around a crazy heist
The second one at least tried to be about something else.
In UK was called Die Hard 4.0.
mostly overlooked is McClanes daughter here, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, she's in some good movies and great in them, in the thing prequel for an example
Love this movie. Thx for your reaction.... I liked the 5th one also.
