  • The Quake series is full of chaos and horror. The Strogg are quite possibly one of the most dangerous species that humanity every encountered. Not only did Earth fail to defend themselves, but millions of humanity also fell prey to the twisted and evil experiments of The Strogg Empire. One of these experiments could be described as a fate worse than death.
What was Stroggification? What makes it so terrifying? And is it really the worst fate imaginable? In this video, we explore the lore and story behind Stroggification in the Quake series.

The stroggification of our character in Quake 4 was the most brutal POV scene I've seen in a game, even looking at it today after all these years, and after games have reach a greater level of realism, I'm still taken aback by how brutal this scene is. That said, I wish they made another narrative driven Quake game, when it comes to plot it has as much potential if not more than the Doom universe, yet they've barely touched it in 19 years, that makes absolutely no sense.

    • @ArDeeMee
      @ArDeeMee 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +40

Just goes to show that „realism“ is a bullsh!t category that often ruins intense moments. It’s a game. Nothing about it is real. For the triple-A industry, realism only means the visuals - storytelling be damned.
I‘d rather have a realistic STORY or MECHANICS. Keep in mind that realistic means logically consistent with the established system. I have unlimited bullets? Ok, just give me a reason that makes sense in the setting, such as Doomguy‘s suit compressing slain demons‘ souls into ammo, fuel and health. I can work with that.

They have no free will, cannot commit suicide, and act as guards for the floating city of Columbia. A lobotomy does not affect pain levels, nor does it act like some kind of memory wipe or personality reset. Both procedures seem equally painful. There is an argument to be made that sproggification is worse. Being transformed into a servitor means one retains some measure of humanity, while getting sprogged is complete dissolution of your physical being, from your limbs to your senses and thoughts. It feels like comparing Big Brother, "a boot forever stomping a human face", dystopian horror, to Soylent Green (which seems to be a direct inspiration) or Invasion of the Body Snatchers, cosmic horror. Personally, being a servitor seems worse because you have to be self aware enough to be useful and trustworthy, whereas it seems like getting sprogged transforms your brain to the point where you have no concept of self, or only enough to understand your part in the hive mind. No thoughts, no worries. Whereas getting turned into a servitor is used as threat and punishment in WH40k.

I do enjoy the Strogg aspect of Quake; I think the idea of a race that depend on harvesting organic life as their method of reproduction to be a disturbing and fascinating concept. And the Stroggification process being like a slaughterhouse ghost house ride, and an extended game over sequence is a memorable sight. I also like the less humanoid Strogg enemy types (like the Stream Protectors), and wish we could see more of that; indicating they've harvested several races, which could provide some interesting lore if they expanded on it, more.

    Missed an opportunity to talk about the waste processing facility, but I guess I'll fill in the blanks;
"Nothing would go to waste, however even then there's a twisted nuance to 'waste' when it comes to the strogg proccessing bodies for their war efforts...
In the rare case, If extremely unlucky, (horrible as it was to forcefully be converted into a strogg unit) a convert could end up as faulty or rejected,
and a fate worse than death would befall them.
By the higher powers that be under the strogg scientists, not quite knowing what to do with their failed yet animate soldier experiments,
such rejects would be condemned to a state of existence as barely alive organic husks bolted together onto shoddy metal frames that easily could fall apart,
doomed to roam the rotting slums of the biowastes within the waste processing facility complex, one might say 'zombies', and that wouldn't be far off the truth,
but they are still more or less alive, and quite hostile regardless of their impaired capabilities.
The most forsaken among such failed transfers roaming this putrid place would be known as the 'slimy transfer'.
A true nightmare fate, discarding the host of all higher thinking capabilities, turning him in a mindless zombie creature with rotting flesh held together by corroded mechanical bodyparts,
voraciously craving the fleshy remains of corpses strewn about in the waste complex, and a vile ability to retaliate against intruders by projectile vomiting highly corrosive acid towards them.
How the failed transfers exactly ended up in this godforsaken place is still not entirely known, but I can only imagine what hell one must suffer to exist like this..."

"Guys, we have laser technology, teleportation, and the ability to augment biological life. But TRUST me, it's CRUCIAL that we chop up the humans with rusty saws blades and big needles, and make them watch all of it!" 😂

_(And before anyone says something about humans and livestock, we're talking space-faring levels of civilization here. The humans in this universe also have advanced sci-fi tech, it's not like they're below the Strogg there or anything. Any scientifically-advanced-enough race would simply be past things like war, butchering, and slavery. Those things, and type-2 civilizations, just don't go together. The strogg are obviously designed just to be scary, not to make logical sense... :P)_

That scene was completely expected. "Oh I'm going to be saved" then your legs get sawn off as your guy screams.
It was memorable, even for a game which wasn't highly rated. And the shooting aspects were top notch too
Great game great scene, giving a basis behind the usual "one man saves the world somehow" trope

as you were describing the process, I saw cracks that could lead to its destruction.
optimally, you'd want to wipe their memories and free will first, and give access last. this would reduce the repercussions of the pain the victims experienced, as they would believe they were "willingly" undergoing the surgery. providing access last ensures that no defects or escapees have access to critical information.
also, why not put them to sleep during the surgery in the first place?
obviously, as this would get in the way of a compelling story, so none of it was done, but I like to ponder anyways.

Theres an expose onboard the hannibal that you can overhear from one of the doctors doing an autopsy on one of the strogg. Something about how "all higher brain functions have ceased, the transciever at the base of the skull shows that all actions were dictated by an external force, I believe for a moment after stroggification the marine was aware of his action but couldn't do anything to stop them"

the order is most likely to be a result of whats best for the machine parts
where your thinking is best for security, project viability, patient sanity or other human style considerations
the strogg had no need for such thinking, their methods had been tried, refined and proven true for eons
they dominated entire civilizations and converted their population to soldiers, drones, machines or food
to our knowledge nobody had yet managed any kind of effective resistance to their invasions, so for all intents, the strogg control the known universe
it wasnt mentioned in the video, but the neural hijack takes advantage of the victims mind, it does not over write its function but takes command of its choices
there has been many instances where strogg units were able to communicate but not prevent action
this is why its a fate worse than death because even after you are 'dead' you have to experience your body being the enemy
thus there isnt actually any cracks in the process
the process its-self was also not at fault regarding Kane's escape
his conversion was interrupted by the attack on the base, an external factor to the process
if normal operations were left unchecked, they would have been entirely successful to the end of time
under normal operations, a subject is successfully converted to a soldier, or something else if conversion fails
even failure isnt failure for the strogg

There's some creepy parallels similar to the process of organ donation that goes on in the real world. The first thing is that organs can't be utilized from dead people. They have to be harvested from the living. Anesthetics can compromise the functioning of the organs, so people are injected with a muscle paralyzer to prevent them from flailing around or screaming. The medical establishment fabricated the concept of "brain death" to justify this practice.

The victim would have died at the very first injection stage. That needle was so thick and the wound it left was so massive that there's no way it would be able to effectively inject anything into the bloodstream and keep the environment intact. That thing would have completely ripped the victim's chest and internal organs apart, if they didn't die instantly from their heart being penetrated then there's no way it would be effective in circulating through their bloodstream considering the massive wound they now have in their chest that would be gushing blood.
That being said the stroggification scene and the game getting better after it is still the part I remember the most from Quake 4.

Yeah, I love how we're supposed to believe this is an advanced alien race with teleportation and space-travel technology, but they can't even do surgeries without comically-oversized needles and saws 😂 ...Like, I get it, it's meant to be scary for the player, not make sense lore-wise. But I find the idea of an alien race somehow developing super-advanced technology yet their factories still look/behave like slaughterhouses extremely funny.
They're supposed to care about "efficiency" and "not making waste" yet they cut up their prisoners with rusty saws and have machines _just_ to poke and torture the ones that failed?? And then instead of using a machine, they basically feed the slop into a giant fat thing that spurts out goo? lol. Soooo efficient. 😅
I think this is why races like the Strogg or Klingon never impress me, they just make me laugh. The concept of "hyper-advanced war-mongering race" is simply conceptually flawed. War is for dull and stupid creatures, advanced technology can't be made by stupid creatures. You could try and write that the war-mongering race just "captured" races with better technology and weapons, but, well... how did they do that in the first place? It's a cliché writing pitfall that makes any sci-fi universe feel silly, imo.
I do think the idea of an "all-consuming" intelligent race is viable, and makes a lot more sense. Either through a massive planet-sized parasite, or something like the Borg. That, to me, is much better cosmic horror. The Strogg are like the sci-fi equivalent of the scary clown with a chainsaw on a hay bale ride.

You are in for a treat with quake lore. Quake Champions is the catalyst that will have you scrounging old texts for information, every character, every map, every reference, every era, time period and object has something to link to lore. (Thank you SyncError.)
With QC, you will find information for all previous Quake games, which you can then look deep into individually too. Fun factoid for Quake 2 lore that I don't think would have worked well in this video, but if you think about how the Strogg came to Earth for it's 'resources' only really focusing on humans and the war it brought, it doesn't answer some questions. But to counter that, in Quake 1, Slipgate Complex is the many times mentioned facility in which slipgate tech was discovered and utilised. It was ancient, otherworldly technology that brought the relics discoverer to complete insanity. Much of the information surrounding the relic hints that it was Strogg technology, suggesting that they were on Earth long before humanity had any idea of the alien species.
I won't go in depth with the impact of the Slipgate Complex in the world of Quake, but it is much more significant than one might presume.

Very cool story ideas, definitely a lot of parallels to the Combine empire from Half Life. This would be a fantastic scenario to run in a D&D or other TTRPG style game - players wake up captured, undergo Stroggification or other homebrew process that makes them powerful, then after being rescued they get to start the game as exceptional individuals.

As much as I've experienced so far Quake 4's Stroggification is the best worst fate cutscene I've ever witnessed. It's even more disturbing than Mortal Kombat fatalities. But after the non-skippable scene, I have to admit that it's quite a reward to the player for enduring the whole grotesque sight. TBH, I almost cry seeing it but suddenly forget it when I regain control. It's like an average grunt transformed into Doom Slayer in a matter of minutes.

"I require stroyent." --strogg soldier from Enemy Territories: Quake Wars
As a Quake fan, TH-cam recommended me correct content this time. I have been meaning to touch back on this for a while now with some friends, regarding the lore, and how I wanted an improved sequel to Enemy Territories once again bringing back the human vs. strogg war. The process of strogg-making/processing was always an interesting dark aspect of Quake 4. I thought for years that Quake 4 did not get enough respect at times for the story and moments of horror that even seem more direct and extreme than Quake 2 was. The waste dump areas were especially screwed up.
I think Half-Life and System Shock were two games that inspired Quake 4 to be the game it was.

The "Quake 2" setting is far more fleshed out than Quake 1s and would probably have more mass appeal as a rebooted franchise like DOOM but I would really like to see the lovecraftian elements of Quake 1 redone especially as after Quake 1 it never got much love.
With all of the slip gates in Quake 1 it wouldn't be hard to merge the 2 duelling settings and finally unify them under the name.

    • @stevesaitz1706
      @stevesaitz1706 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I always felt that the setting and environment of Quake 1 was much more creepy and frightening. But to a lot of people, Quake 1 didn't even really have a story, and like you said, it really needed to be fleshed out more.
but if they had of, I feel like it could have been really good. And because of that, I was kinda sad when they abandoned it in Q2

Quake lore is underrated. They need to make a new game that tied one and two together. My theory is that the other dimension in #1 and the strogg had a military alliance. Once the strogg saw what happened to shub they became aware of humanity and invaded to get us before we could get them. You can see strogg logos on the boxes in some of the levels in q1.
