As a biology major, the idea of a planet loosing it's entire food chain save for three apex predators gives me an aneurism. I suppose in theory they could get by preying on the strogg themselves, were it not for the fact that the strogg have, you know, lasers. also, it's actually generally herbivores like rhinos and hippos that charge anything that so much as looks at them funny, not predators. For a predator can be convinced that you're simply not worth the effort, but there is no negotiating with an animal that thinks you're actively trying to eat it.

My theory is that they eat organic waste from failed stroggification. Not all of it becomes stroyent, as seen in Quake 4. Strogg are less efficient than the Borg in a few ways.
The Strogg are cybernetic warmongers but now I'm curious if they were always like that or are a product of circumstance. Now that we have those extra Quake 2 missions that show the Shub Niggurath presence I wonder if it had cards to play into the transformation of Stroggos as a whole.
Whether they were always like that or not doesn't matter now. They changed to be where they presently are and that's who and what they are now. Even with the Makron and Nexus gone, the Strogg will simply fall into a civil war amongst war lords, fighting to obtain dominance and reunify themselves to continue their "empire".

But come on. Dude IS a full-on strogg by classification now, regardless of free will. It's like saying my computer is only partially in use when I'm not the one using it. It's hinted the Strogg feel betrayed by humanity because they tried to work alongside humans during the events of Quake 1 only for the slipgate network to be permanently cut off. From their point of view, humans may have stopped them taking over the multiverse using the Shub Niggurath portals.
I always wonder if the movie Hardware (1990) had much influence on Quake 2. Industrial soundtrack and cameos from musicians. Cybernetic augmentation. And a robot from a past war whos ai goes rampant and wants to kill and looks very much like a Strogg creation. It just needs some flesh.

This next to HL2 Are two of he timeless games. I know it wasn't what people exected but my goodness, the lore and exrtra detais and literal horror elements really pushes it. Not being the Slayer lends to that a lot to. I'll bet people talk more about Doom 3 than 2016 and Eternal as amazing games they where. It never got too deep into the how and why this event happened.
I've never played quake or know the lore, but those 2 moons the strogg planet has... That gravity generator I personally assume are used to keep the moons in their positions whilst keeping them together as they had mined those moons to the point that they were going to be torn apart by the stroggs planets gravity itself. So basically they used a machine to create a artificial gravity tether to both moons as them being torn apart and destroyed whilst falling back to stroggos would have been a extinction level event. Again I have no idea about quake but that idea I like, the strogg truly rely on machinery to correct their flaws, cockups and outright stop the moons from being destroyed by their own actions.
I wouldn't really count on any Strogg to decide they're gonna change. They're bred for war, it's all they know. So instead it's definitely the case that the Strogg will simply splinter into various factions trying to rebuild and reunify their shattered empire to continue as before.
i would love to see necromophs and stroggs going head to head, each side seeing the other as an abomination and wanting to destroy each other i feel like the strogg could 100% create a weapon that could blow up a Brethren Moon
Quake Wars and Quake 4, with a little from Quake 2, were the only games in the Quake series that I have played. Seeing a comeback would be pretty cool and maybe an improvement of Quake Wars' Battlefield style gameplay would make for a dang good experience.
Did anyone play Enemy Territory: Quake Wars back in the day? I used to always play as the Strogg, annoying PS5 doesn’t have it in the classics catalogue
My theory is that the Strogg were once a simple race, but when they came into contact with Quake, they began to gain an almost human level of intelligence (not unlike the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey). Due to their prolonged exposure to Quake, their minds became warped, becoming personalized serial killers under a militaristic regime. They sacrificed their own bodies in favor of machines. The Strogg were no longer a single race, they were any creature or race that had been conquered/unlucky enough to come in contact and subsequently Stroggified. The Strogg are a close ally of Quake, as it had basically created them. They were the next in line to conquer Earth after the Overlord from Dissolution of Eternity had failed. At least, that’s what I like to think anyway!
