Thank you very much. I'm already making plans - a portfolio/menu really - for next year (in between the rain!)

Excellent information thank you! I’ve been there many times mostly by kayak.
Did you see the wide channel that seems to lead from one beach to another.. local knowledge says it’s purpose could have been a way to haul a boat from one beach when it was too rough to launch to the other that may have been more sheltered. A type of tarbert?

Thanks for the lovely comment and fair play to you to go by kayak. One year I will do the same.... Interesting point about the channel. You could very well be right, cause the sea always seems calmer on the sandy side. Admittedly I have never been there during a storm... :-)

There’s a kayaking company called Paddle and Sea ( Steve and Emily) that do trips over to Beginish. They are based at the Marina in Caherciveen.

@@robintaylor4480 There were probably many similarities, but also some differences. Moreover, the Norse in Ireland probably eventually differed from Norse in Scandinavia, after adopting certain Irish customs, being influenced by the Irish language, etc.,

The surname Sugrue (Ó Siochfhradha) is rather unique to County Kerry-the Iveragh Peninsula in particular. Woulfe notes it as being from the Norse name Sigefrith. County Kerry Griffins-(genetically) somewhat unique to the Dingle and Iveragh Peninsulas-somehow moved from Scotland to West Kerry sometime between the years 500 and 1600 CE. It's certainly possible, if not probable, that the name Sugrue was adopted from County Kerry based Norse and that the ancestor of the (County Kerry) Griffins was transported from Scotland to West Kerry by Vikings.

I have heard that about Sugrue (pronounced in South Kerry somewhat similar to its pronunciation in Irish, so it is a good marker of who is local). But I hadn't heard that about the Griffins. An interesting possibility and one that could well be true. Thanks for that
