Though Viking conquests in Ireland lasted a brief period-around 150 years-their presence radically changed the island, bringing Ireland into Scandinavian trade networks.

Wish he had mentioned exactly what happened to the Dane that slew Brian Boru. He walked out of the tent holding Boru's severed head, only to discover several hundred Irishmen surrounding him. The Dane's torture lasted over 12 hours, and his dismemberment and desecration was so complete that there was no part of his body to be removed from the scene.
Also wish there was more describing the battle of Clontarf. It's F'n epic, and a battle where the Irish out-vikinged the Vikings.

    • @Drewski-hw1yi

Sounds brutal but since alot of what we hear about Brian boru and the battle come from his grandson trying to legitimize his rule with the pope and tring to blame the slave trade on those entirely" heathen foreigners"and minimize the willing participation of many Irish from peasants to high kings. When in reality the battle was more Irish and some Norse Gaels rebelling against Brian who himself also had Norse Gaels in his army as well.

Sadly, public schools (at least in my time) never made the subject of History weird, nor interesting, nor even fun! The most recent event they discussed was the Cuban Missile Crisis, but that was sponsored content. By themselves, the most recent thing they have covered is either in World War II (though I'm fairly sure that was also sponsored) or their series on the 1918 Flu Pandemic (get your shot!), but I'm uncertain about that.

0:58 they actually didn't call it 'Dublin' themselves. The native Gaeil called it 'Dubh Linn' (pronounced duvv linn) which is Irish for 'Black Pool'. They called it this because the river Liffey (Abhainn na Life) at this time was deep enough that you couldn't see the river bed, so it appeared dark and black. When the English colonised Dubh Linn they anglicised the name to Dublin.

I'm not a patreon so I can't really vote on topics. But heck! I'll give it a try: maybe try doing a separate episode on Peter the great. I know he has come up in the great northern war videos. But I'm now reading a biography of his and there is so much more fascinating history. From his childhood to the Two (or three) Strelky rebellions. The book is called "Peter the great, a biography" by Robert K. Massie.
I just think a man so grant deserves a series on his own. So yeah. I hope you read this and take it into account😁

Overall good episode, but a few historical and pronunciation nitpicks.
    1. It's pronounced Bree-an Boru. Bry-an Boru is the anglicised version. You kept the Gaelic Uí Néil Kingdoms instead of anglicising to O'Neill, so why not do the same for Brian Boru.
    2. By 1002, Boru was King of both Munster and Tara, and held the title of High King. As all other Kings swore fealty to him, he was effectively the King of Ireland.
    3. It's pronounced Clontarf not Clontrif
Brian Boru is a fascinating historical figure. His bloody rise to power and his attempts to overthrow Ireland's tribal system and install himself as a European style monarch would be a fascinating Extra History series.

Ireland wasn't then and isn't now part of the 'British Isles'. There is the island of Ireland in which a small community of Northern Ulster Protestants have allegiances to London.
