A day in the life as an Anesthesiologist Assistant - My 24 Hour Shift

  • Hey everyone! Since I promised to release a youtube video when I reached 1000 followers on my instagram... here it is! I had a 24 hour shift back in October and filmed some things through out the day and night. I'm not allowed to record much of whats happening in the operating room, especially if there's a patient present. But you do get a glimpse of some typical things I do are (anesthesia set up) and how a day could be like as an anesthesiologist assistant. NOTE: not all days are like this - this is a weekend which is why there aren't many people around.
    For those of you who don't know me, I am a certified anesthesiologist assistant and I have been working for about 3 years. My goal is to spread the word about this profession to aspiring students in the medical field - comment down below and follow me on instagram if you have any questions!
    To my current followers, thanks so much for your support!

    Just started looking into this profession (anesthesiologist assistant) . I have been interested in the health field my entire life. Only interested in several fields. Though now I'm much older than probably most. I'm very interested in the this line of work. Always have been. Sometimes some of us will put our needs, wants, dreams well behind others. This is what got me to my older age and nothing to say for it for myself. Though I have little one in raising now. It's also time I start taking time to listen to my own desires. This happens to be one of them. Thank you for sharing this video. Didn't know if they allowed assistance to intubate patients or not.

    Great video!! Would you mind making a video describing the differences between your job and CRNA’s?

    • @rebeccatemple2550
      @rebeccatemple2550 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I am sure she will do a video on this! But, mainly the differences are schooling, pay, and autonomy. As far as the workday goes, they are very similar. I guess if you are wanting to do anesthesia and trying to decide between the two think about what you want to do in undergrad and if autonomy is something that you care about. I am currently in a BSN-RN program and am going to go to CRNA school. If you do not want to go to nursing school, AA Is the way to go. CRNA school requires a BSN and RN licensure as well as two years of RN ICU experience, some schools require less, depends on location/school. I believe that AAs require a science-related Bachelors's and some shadow experience, but I do not think that AA programs require work experience. Again, I am more familiar with the CRNA side of things, but I hope this helps a little bit.

    • @mikmiklicayan4483
      @mikmiklicayan4483 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rebeccatemple2550 hi im a BSN-RN, would it be backwards if i aim to become an AA instead of a CRNA ? Is being an AA generally easier than a CRNA?

    • @shitachimadarame2529
      @shitachimadarame2529 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikmiklicayan4483 Hi, hoping I can provide a good answer since I have a BSN and previous background in the sciences. For AA programs they generally prefer science pre-req courses that a pre-med would normally take like Gen. Physics, bio, gen Chem, orgo- Chem, human anatomy, and biochem along with a Bachelor’s degree of any kind. Most of those classes are normally not part of the RN curriculum, so it may be more difficult when it comes to the prework to apply.
      I have also shadowed both AAs and CRNAs and the jobs are basically the same. However there is MUCH greater independence on the CRNA side and they can practice in all 50 states as well as being able to practice without supervision in certain opt-out states. However, CRNA programs will all require 36+ months of school by 2025 while AA only requires around 25-27 months. You could definitely switch to AA with a BSN, just be prepared to take higher level science courses.

    Before college I thought of doing this but I went ahead and went into nursing instead and then CRNA school. Working independently is what sold me on being a CRNA. But both are still awesome jobs that I recommend to anyone that wants a great career and living with less schooling. The education to income ratio is a lot better than most careers.
