    That line 'Why tell the future to a dead man' is a call back to Yabushige telling the same dialogue to Omi in the previous episode referring to Toronaga as the dead man.

    I want to punch myself for complaining about the lack of battle scenes of samurai cutting each other in the Battle of Sekigahara. As Toranaga said, I and Nagakado, who had never experienced warfare, wanted to fight right away, while Toranaga, who had experienced warfare, ended the Battle of Sekigahara without fighting.

      He never ended the Battle of Sekigahara without fighting. While its true that his political tricks helped him, because a lot of clans betrayed Ishida in the battle, but thousands of people were killed in HOURS. It was gruesome but it was the foundation for a 200 year peaceful era.

      To me this a great example why the show is a masterpiece in my opinion. Me Being dissappointed in there not being a battle or actually seeing him on the throne is partly because im western and grew up exposed to western media. The story and acting is top class obviously, but how it portrays Japanese culture and history is what gets me.
      Some things explained, some things not. Just like Blackthorne, a western, experiences it. In this day and age I feel like most shows treat viewers as if we are dumb. Everything is on the nose and needs to get explained. Maybe its partly true due to the amount of short term media filling our brains with nonsense. I however due enjoy engage in conversation and media that coerce me into being curious. Grabbing my attention so that I theorize about the plot or introduce me to new things. I've always been drawn to and fascinated to japanese culture witouth truly knowing why. This made me even more into it.
      Playing with my western brain, making me shed tears, making me shake my head in disbelief. Thank you Shogun 10/10.
      PS. Im a single 31 year old man and this show made me read about japanese history for hours on a Saturday night when all my other friends have famillies or go out partying. Maybe it sounds sad to some but my short lifespan feels a little bit more richer being openminded and learning about different cultures and history. DS.
      Great reaction BTW!!!

    that old blackthorn is a dream/vision of blackthorns western self dying and being reborn as japanese. he is never going back to england

      True and toranaga also says he’s basically going to keep blackthorn for himself because he makes him laugh and alludes to burning more ships in the future I think a lot of people mistook the dream sequence of him imagining life if he went back to England for a literal flash forward in time

    "A Dream of a Dream" - Blackthorn going back, growing old and dying in England is a Dream which he had to let go. He never left the Japans.

    Thanks so much, Demica & Cam! 🗾 The show's makers say, despite it's high viewership, it'll unlikely have a season 2 since it ended where the book ended. But there are six books written by James Clavell... so, I can't help but hope for more.

    Really liked the moment whenn Toranaga said ''Why tell a dead man the future'' it was a reference to what Yabushige said about Toranaga to Omi in the early episodes, which could only mean Omi was working for Taoranaga from the start. Amazing short reference.

    Anjin only imagined that future. “A Dream of a Dream.” They said in the podcast that his arc is about learning to let go. (He lets go of the dream of returning to England because he knows he’d die among people who still think of Mariko’s people as savage, so could never understand the man he is now.)

    “The Ogre lost his precious Leafless Branch the moment he crushed the Flower underfoot; sisters in the end, after all”
    Yabushige and Toranaga smiling at each other in the end. He got the best end he could have gotten, realizing that whether he knew it or not, he has served his Lord Toranaga excellently.
    Blackthorne kills a possible future version of himself-an old man, filled with regret-by mirroring Mariko (literally doing a ritual su!c!d3 like a woman [a blade through the heart] instead of seppuku [slicing his belly open] like a samurai would) in order to protect Ajiro: the first completely selfless thing he has done in the show.
    They actually managed to tie up most, if not all, loose ends without sacrificing the pacing and the rhythm that they built up from the past 9 episodes.
    So who is ready for a “new/separate” mini-series, titled “Sekigahara”?

    • @Javelineer
      @Javelineer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I agree with your point on Yabushige. He is disloyal but just as Toranaga said, they all made it possible like even Yabushige's disloyal nature had some contributions to a bigger picture, an era of peace. So yeah, Yabushige served Toranaga in the way that Toranaga himself wanted him to..
      And he was happier in his last moment than he ever was.

    • @khaii13
      @khaii13 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Javelineer to think this entire elaborate plan falls apart, or is at least severely hampered, if Mariko did not die… which is why, at the end of ep9, when Yabushige suggested they rush to the gate, Mariko said she would not risk capture and barricaded herself in a store room where the only way to access her was to blow the door. The shinobi (and most Japanese) would not have thought that a Samurai would choose to die in the way Mariko-sama chose her end. Yes, she orchestrated her death by making the most of the play Yabushige was making.
