Those ghost shrimp are called yabbies or pink nippers here in Oz (it changes from one to the other depending on which state you're in) and they're an excellent bait. Sometimes you can find someone who sells them but 99% of the time people pump their own at low tide. Anyone who fishes saltwater regularly has a bait pump for them. We use the same basic rig you are using but the hook is usually a long shank worm hook or an Aberdeen hook you'd know it as. Aberdeen hooks are also very good for dead prawns (shrimp). Feed the point of the hook in from the tail to the head just as you did with the ghost shrimp. If you get a larger prawn you turn the hook as the point comes out between the front legs and turn it back into the body then hald hitch a loop around the tail and it lays out nice and flat like it's alive. This is a rig just about every Queenslander learns as a child and it produces just about anything you might want to eat.
Just drove 900 miles from Indiana to enjoy the area. Your channel encouraged me to hit the pier. Had a great time watching the locAL's ocean fishing. Great people down south👍
I believe this is my most favorite video you've made. I enjoyed the wind noise, it made me feel like I was there again. Thank you. Love that pier. Wonderful people fish there
One of the reasons I subscribed to your channel was because you primarily surf fish,, with the occasional boat/kayak trip, or jetty,, or pier. I'm just the opposite. I primarily pier fish (mostly because I work there), with the occasional surf trip, or fishing the sound from the shore (I don't have a boat,, yet!). Our season is closed right now,, all our fish are down south for the winter, or in the creeks that flow into the sound, and we don't really expect to see anything until around the kiddo for March, then we start seeing some kingfish (aka - sea mullet, whiting, Virginia mullet, roundhead), then as the water warms up, we'll start to see some blues, spanish mackerel, king mackerel, red drum, black drum, sheepshead, trout, flounder, puffers, pompano, and a few other fish. You really need to come up here to Topsail Island, and get in on some of the action!
Man I don’t know that I would have noticed any issues with the audio had you not pointed it out. Certainly wasn’t a distraction to me, and I’m glad you went ahead and put the vid up. 🤘🤘
That one sheepshead is a big deal! Also I LOVE whiting! They are so calm when I take them off the hook and they’re cute! I’d say the with the Sheepshead and two whiting, that was a great day! You can feed the whole family💖💖❤️
Matt , the audio wasn't that bad . The fishing and video were also good . Don't beat yer self up over the small stuff . Take care now . Tom Daytona Beach, FL. 4, Feb. 2021 .
Honestly Bama. I'm glad you released this video, I never thought they'd open it up until it was repaired all the way down. Then again, if the end doesn't get repaired by summer, we can all catch alot of Spanish at least lol
Hey Bama, asked Brant this question as well but I'll see what you say. Looking into a new rod/reel combo mainly for beach/pier fishing with the occasional Gulf boat trip. What would you look at for yourself? Also, any suggestions for some good waders? Please drop affiliates if you have em!
Coming to camp at gulf state park in July. First time coming to this park. Hopefully me and my sons will be able to catch a few. Also thinking of bringing my boat. Just gotta do some more research of the area.
I recommend a knocker rig for the sheepshead, can’t feel the bite on a Carolina too well. With a tight line and knocker you can feel the subtle tap much better. Also try chumming with oysters or crab parts that’ll fire em up a bit. I also rig a raw oyster for bait and it never fails.
I haven't been down there in 3 years. Gulf State Park hotel was under construction still. Good to see you on the pier, the Coast Guard helicopter and NAS fire drill smoke in background.... familiar sights. Craving grilled fish now 👍
Good audio or not still a good video. I’m not a saltwater fisherman by any means but your videos have definitely given me great information to catch more fish. Hopefully this year I will get to go to the beach or pier and be able to catch some dinner.
Nice video! The sound quality was not totally bad, and of course bigger whiting is always fun to catch. Hey, I haven't seen you target king fish, or maybe you have? Just a thought.
Audio wasn’t that bad....folk just spoiled!! Nice video! I miss the pier....been a busy year, had a kid! Hope Elmore Co has recovered from that tornado last year bud!
Ok, as a Baldwin County resident I feel compelled to call out those keep calling the Gulf of Mexico the Ocean... as the saying goes "You're killing me Smalls!" Maybe I shouldn't because I actually get a little giggle out it every time! On second thought folks, CARRY ON...
I dont know if you ever reply to comments but my wife and I along with our 3 kids are going to be down there March 23-26th and I really want to take them on a successful fishing trip. Any suggestions for me on whats biting best that time of year and stuff? Been looking it up and watching a lot of your videos but it would really be nice to have a local opinion. Thanks.
I hear they are making the gulf pier a major tourist destination with high admission and $10 parking on top of that. I'll avoid that mess and fish off the beach or go to Pensacola or Navarra beach if I want to do some pier fishing.
@@BamaBeachBum I appreciate the response. ill be sure to check that. How do you conserve battery in between catches. I tried filming and it felt like i only caught fish when my camera was off.
@@silverfish3868 Not a lot, we caught a few crappie and white perch one day last week, then caught some bass and yellow perch the next. Then I got a cold (not the rona fortunately) so I've been at home mostly since then. Have you gotten to fish any? OR have you found any silver?
Here in South africa we call them Crackers or cracker shrimps, scientific name Calianasa krausii. Excuse spelling... We normally bunch them about 3 or 4 at a time so little peckers dont completely eat them before bigger fish get to them
The pier was closed for almost 9 months (265 days) between the refit and post hurricane repairs. Yes, I counted (and cried) every one of them ;-) lol
Pier pounder, yes I know who you are. I would love to have a cup of coffee with you. DM me
I know it's kinda off topic but does anybody know of a good place to stream new series online?
@Sawyer Sonny Flixportal xD
@Jabari Callan thank you, I went there and it seems to work :D Appreciate it !!
@Sawyer Sonny glad I could help =)

That made me laugh seeing Amrit, my brother, in the background at 4:20 mark. 😂😂🤙🏼
You've got me wanting to be ocean fishing right now, instead of sitting indoors waiting for my rivers to unfreeze!
Love that you fish all kinds of water that us average Joe's without a boat, can fish! Your honesty and character keep us coming back!

Great trip! The water is so green . The audio was not bad at all . Hopefully will get to spend more time down there this year.
You should do more pier videos, I love these

That blue fish took a shot haha. Every fish you catch looks yummy. No?
When Mr #’r gives you tips, you’ll catch fish!

Can't wait, should be there in 3 weeks. I sure did miss gulf shore last year.
Me too, Tony....the pandemic killed 2020 but heading back down there in 2021...
The sound was fine... You’ve got a high standard. Enjoyed the vid! Find a way in the winter to entertain the Bums! 😁
Over here in MS we call those ground mullet there a darker color. I guess because of the dark water we have in the sound.

Good video. I'm going to scout the pier right now. Might swing by hooked up & see what they got.
The whiting really look just like a California Corbina. Are they good eating? Corbina are called "Surf Candy".
Gonna be there on vacation at the end of March and looking forward to fishing the pier again. Thanks for the vid
Great video when is a good time of the year to fish that pier?
Great fishing video l love to fish the pier

I’m from MO but I take a trip to fish the gulf every year. These videos are amazing man been subbed for a minute now You ever do a spade fish video?
He should.
Pier fishing is my favorite
When the fishing starts picking up again I’d love to see you do more catch and cooks so we can see the different recipes you do
Audio wasn't bad at all dude. Wish we had sheep's head here in Scotland they look really cool. 👍
The Whiting bite was hot yesterday afternoon. Caught a few. Saw 30-40 caught. Good day. Met folks from Wisconsin and Georgia.
i am coming to the pier in early april and ive only saltwater fished once before any tips

Cool man. I’m ready for those sheep too.
I've fished there on vacation!..only caught one bluefish though ..lol
Same exact thing that happened on my christmas vacation to pensacola/navarre. Just one bluefish lol
Are they still going to fix the pier over by the ferry boat
Good too see some fish are biting
Where did you get your bait?
"There's a whole group of em right below you." LOL
Man I love that place !!👍
What is a ghost shrimp where do you get them

I have a link to the mic. It’s an action hat

Nice Sheepshead man! That pier looks like it’s on fire 🎣
Waiting on you to upload more sheep vids 💯💯
Audio wasn’t that bad. Loved the video!
Great video! I had no issues with the audio.
Vids look great Matt🤘
Wow thx !! Makes me want to head down!!
Today we had a blizzard, tomorrow should be 30 below, and Ice fishing is just not cutting it. I know where I'd rather be.
Audio wasn't bad at all. Awesome video
The audio didn’t bother me at all. Great video. Nice to see the pier open again.
Oh no! You unshelled a hermit crab. Great bait
The octagon is now a FAD that can only be accessed via the water. 100 yards from where the pier now ends for fishing.
What type of shrimp are they where can you buy them
Have you done a sheep’s head catch n cook video before? If so I missed it. I’d love to see that
I have, I think there’s a couple.
That cart is just happy to be used again. It's jealous of the kayak
Hey Beach bum wonder how many fish are under the pier now
I really haven't tried to get my sheepshead game going.
Maybe I'm due.
Nice vid bama
What equipment do you use to record in total?
I have some link in the description of my stuff

Anchoring a boat near fishing pier is one of the all-time moves and a baffling financial decision.
That’s a couple of nice fish to take home
Where do you get your ghost shrimp?
I pump them myself
The local pier here was totalled during Irma. Wish they would build another.

What state is this?
Just came threw I-10 today 2-7 was thinking about you guys
Fiddler's would of made a huge difference in the sheephead bite but bait shops probably didn't have any since they hide in their holes when it's cold
Hey bama.. I'm getting ready to open a commercial fishing company there in Alabama. Would love the chance to fish with you and learn some things.
I liked your fishing rod.
Love those big whiting they do get really big
Why do you hold the rod pointed down like that?

Bro did gulf shores open the pier back already!?!?
Yes sir
@@BamaBeachBum awesome man. I’ll see you this weekend out there!
Was down their last weekend and loaded up on sheepies
Ahhhh you beat me there, don’t be catching everything since I told you about it
Give some fishermen the materials and tools needed that pier will be fixed and done in a week lol
That's going to be a good dinner
