Another experiment you could try is something I did where I ground off the grooves on a sandwedge in order to prove to my pupils that for them it is not all about the grooves. That the spin rate remains remarkably high and that my 18 handicapers don’t need to change their wedges every 12 months because they keep getting told on the Internet that the grooves are wearing out
I did bend all my irons 2 degrees stronger to optimize my gapping in relation to how far my hybrids and woods go and been playing them. It works great.
All the best for Christmas and New Year AJ and your family. I started a new job in a proshop this year and your channel has helped me be Moree efficient and professional at our club. Appreciate you man.
I'm new to the channel. Club making and fitting is something I've been wanting to do as a side hustle for quite some time. Watching your channel has really given me the itch to make a dream come to fruition. Thank you
I bought a set of Greg Norman Australian blade irons . The 6 and 9 irons were very worn from the range , and when checked the 9 had the loft of an 8 and the 6 was the same loft as the 4 in the set . Very soft heads , but worth the 49 blabs I paid .
Very nice video!!!! I personally play 2° weaker to keep it in the air longer. I have gained 20 yards as a result. I always tell people their game is their game, forget what other people have in their bags.
20 yards? This is possible only if you deloft an insane amount (like you're hitting stingers every time), or have such low clubhead speed that you can't keep the ball in the air.
Would love to see a video on offset with clubs , I’m confused about more or less offset and what it is for . I have 2 sets of irons and the ones with less offset seem to be a lot more accurate
Can you explain why at American golf when I had a check up, that the fitter said he would be inclined to put my irons at 3 degrees upright as it would assist me to stop slicing and pushing ?. Enjoyed this video as normal, your channel is really enlightening. Thanks.
It would come down to your swing. The more upright the lie angle of a club is, the more the ball will draw and hook. A flatter lie will cause slicing, etc.
That was really interesting. I had custom ordered (no extra cost) a set that was 1 degree upright and 1 degree strong. By seeing the results here, I basically wasted the effort. It looks like you would need to be far more aggressive in order to see much difference. Probably could’ve just ordered them standard and it probably wouldn’t have made much difference, particularly for an amateur player that had more variation in swing than a professional.
1 degree will probably yield about 2-3 yards over the long haul. As you said, most golfers aren't that consistent with their distances so 2 or 3 degrees would be needed to see any change on a shot to shot basis.
This is a great representation as to why iron sets generally don't go below 24 deg. Most people do not have the club head speed for it. It doesn't matter if you call it a 1 iron, 3 iron, or 5 iron, a 21 deg iron is very hard to hit.
Except that's not true. Standard iron sets go to 21 or 22 degrees, which is a 4 iron on most sets. With new tech it's not that hard to hit. Anyone with 95+ driver ss can easily get a 22 deg iron in the air.
@youngkim666 All hollow body clubs are cast. The term "forged/cast" literally covers all golf clubs. But my point still stands. 22 deg is standard 4 or 5 iron. They come with all sets. They're not super hard to hit for average and above ss.
There was not really a great discussion on what all this showed. Down at 21 it was basically a 4iron, would have been interesting to hit a stock 21 deg takomo and see what produced and if it was easier to hit.
Amazing that Takomo 6 iron took that much bending! I play the 101s. I would ask though, by bending it in either direction, aren’t you in effect turning that 6 iron into a 5 iron or a 7 iron?
I'm not sure what the message was? It couldn't have been that one could bend a club lots. Does it make sense to bend a club or just club up? I'd consider doing it for gapping purposes.
your last setup is the exact argument against one length. i always play my clubs 2 weak because A) i like more traditional lofts, helps me get in a good window and B) straight neck is the only club i ever want to look at. offset is downright offensive and nobody builds anything without it anymore.
Great demo. Do you ever consider bending just one or two irons to get proper gaping. My ping gap wedge and 9 iron don’t play like they are part of the rest of the set. I am sure it must be my swing but I just don’t seem to get the proper distance.
Often you will have 1 or 2 clubs that aren't matching up either because they aren't set at the correct loft or based on the individuals swing. In that case we just fix those outliers.
pro tip---todays 7 iron is yesterdays 5 iron. tomorrow it will be a 9 iron. Yes they want to sell the clubs they make but some things stay the same....like loft.
depends whether it s a forged or cast head. and each manufacturer will tell you what bent limits their heads have, you you don't have to make a sweeping guess.
@ for sure, but would the distance on a solid strike being any different? Low ball flight with the short irons and high ball flight with the long irons with proper gapping is the holy grail of iron fitting. Wondering if bending would help accomplish that.
Hey man, you’re hitting it further these days but the swing looks identical. What are you doing do get more distance? Also, what shaft and specs are you using? It’s perfect for you. Thanks
So, bend your 7 iron so you can hit it as far as a 6 iron, but you still need something to hit your previous 7 iron distance. wtf? Who fucking cares how far your irons go as long as they go where you want.

Thanks! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Excellent content I wish golf TH-camr explain it as simple as this I’m a newbie and no clue about different lofts and angle you got my sub thank you!!

It would come down to your swing. The more upright the lie angle of a club is, the more the ball will draw and hook. A flatter lie will cause slicing, etc.
The upright lie will point the face further to the left which can help if you have issues with a slice.
That was really interesting. I had custom ordered (no extra cost) a set that was 1 degree upright and 1 degree strong. By seeing the results here, I basically wasted the effort. Look forward to seeing this club on eBay. 🤣🤣🤣

Absolutely agree. The one factor is that 6 iron shaft length is shorter than a 3 iron so you’ll have less club head speed

You miss about 4mph club head speed with a 6 iron vs 3/4 iron, makes a difference getting it up with enough spin and land angle.
@@eric1020true with modern hollow body stuff. Not true with modern fully forged/cast solid body clubs

What i found missing was discussion of effect on decent angle and spin at each of these lofts.
There was not really a great discussion on what all this showed. Down at 21 it was basically a 4iron, would have been interesting to hit a stock 21 deg takomo and see what produced and if it was easier to hit.
Descent and spin will go up as you add loft, and vice versa.
@@krusher74 21 degrees is more of a 3 iron unless you are talking about loft jacked clubs

No, it still says 6 iron on the club.

Yup.. that 20° 6 iron identifies as a 6 iron 😂😂😂

When you increase loft you increase BOUNCE.....yup....bounce can actually get in the way of good contact

2 degrees stronger is safe & will give you extra distance w/o compromising structural integrity…

I just bought a set of used dyna power forged, they are 1/4 inch short on the shaft, will that ruin the club, seller was not aware, please advise, 🌳
1/4 inch usually won't makes any difference. It will really only show in the short irons.
@EFGMC how would it change short irons, what would happen, 🌳
Thank you for your help
Wilson irons are usually 1/4 inch longer than most other manufacturers as standard. So 1/4 short is probably same as other brands standard
@@seamusc1 thank you, 👍
How does an iron bent to the same degrees as a standard club compare? Or how would a 7i bent to a 5i loft compare to a 5i?
@ for sure, but would the distance on a solid strike being any different? Low ball flight with the short irons and high ball flight with the long irons with proper gapping is the holy grail of iron fitting. Wondering if bending would help accomplish that.
The 7i would tend to go left more due to the offset. It would also generally not go as far since the shaft is shorter than the 5i
Hey man, you’re hitting it further these days but the swing looks identical. What are you doing do get more distance? Also, what shaft and specs are you using? It’s perfect for you.

I appreciate it. My speed has gone up a few miles per hour. I'm also trying to keep more forward shaft lean through impact. I had DG 120 X100 in here.
If clubs are usually 3deg between clubs and gapping is 10 years, we should be getting 3.3yards per deg.
9° bend?? That is surprising to hear.
15° is nuts!! I coukd definitely hit that 7i past my friends 7i😂😂😂
Impressive on Tokomo
Yeah, did not think I'd get 9 degrees after already going so far the other direction.
Is it possible to bend a p770 3 degrees stronger?
Yes.
This must be a forged iron.
Don't try to bend a cast iron this way.
Must easier. Take your 7 iron and just paint an 8 on it.
So, bend your 7 iron so you can hit it as far as a 6 iron, but you still need something to hit your previous 7 iron distance. wtf? Who fucking cares how far your irons go as long as they go where you want.
