Pier Fishing for Beginners - Easy Fishing at the Gulf State Park Pier

- The Gulf State Park Pier is a great place to go fishing, and its easy enough for beginners. This pier is located on the Gulf in Gulf Shores AL. As a beginner myself, (this is my third time pier fishing) I like to fish with shrimp and cut bait. Using packaged rigs that have a couple hooks on each. I manage to catch a few croakers, whiting, hard head catfish, and a Gafftopsail catfish. I even caught a bait fish on a sabiki rig! The views are amazing and you might even see a shark or two under the pier. If you are new to pier fishing, try the Gulf State Park Pier. Its easy enough for beginners to catch fish and have fun.

You know what I've noticed about realistic fishing? He looks like he puts so much care into each of his casts.
Why waste time making pointless casts? Great comment Adam 👍
Im heading to Gulf Shore next month. What size line was you using ?
Catching fish and watching the sun go down. That's a good day.
Definitely! 😀
Of the vacations we've gone on in the past 3 years or so...Gulf Shores is the most fun relaxing beach town!!! Nobody seems to be in a huge hurry...we loved it!!
I think its a great place to visit 👍
Time off between shifts AND a new realisticfishing video! Hell yeah!
👍
Reminds me of my younger days. Used to fish the pier at night then the jetty in the morning here in TX. Never knew what I would see or catch. Thanks RF.
Thanks for watching Gary 👍
I chuckle when I hear people call them 'catfish' down here in the south while fishing saltwater!...old timers like myself grew up knowing them as 'hard heads'...and, that one you caught with the tall top dorsal fin was a 'gaff top'. I myself only relate 'catfish' to fresh water fishing, but, that's just 'me' ! Have a great day!
Ah the good old days when you could go to the pier's octagon!! Cool video man!
Nice video! Piers are so fun, easy and you never know what you're gonna catch
Thats right. Got any piers over that way?
Like a box of chocolates
That pier fishing is some of the best there is. Grew up doing that with my grandpa.
👍 I had a great time
Winston here from fresh air outdoors. Wanted to say great video got me super pumped, I'm about to head to Galveston on Thursday because my buddy is graduating from A&M and I get to fish their T-dock. Super excited. Also gonna do loads of pier fishing and I wanna catch some whiting (they're actually delicious) and I either want to catch my first black drum or my first sheep's head. Thanks for the video this one really got me hyped to go fish!!!!!! That gafftop is crazy looking, I still haven't caught one so that's also on my ~hit list~
Good luck out there!
You caught a cat fish!!!! That's way cool, this is exactly how I started fishing with my dad, now I fish fresh and salt. I didn't even know there was cat fish in the salt water
at least 2 different kinds! Crazy 😀
Sail cats fight hard and are delicious. Taste like channel cats to me. I ate some before I heard not to. LOL!
@@randystone4903 yea don't eat saltwater catfish
So I have been watching you u t ube chennel for about 3 weeks.
Now I have a couple of ideas for you to try when you go trout fishing.
1. Velveeta cheese
2. A juicy grasshopper they really drive the trout crazy.
3. A wax worm.
Keep up the grate job keeping fishing real.
Your waters are so clear. Galveston has all the dirt from the Mississippi River Delta. I could see the shark. Nice video.
Nice to see you saltwater fishing. Those cats bring back a lot of memories for me of trips to a Florida pier with my Grandfather
A few years ago, I didn't even know saltwater catfish was a thing 😀
Joseph NY Wayfarer Same here. I remember my grandfather getting finned by one. Is hand swelled up, and he was in some major pain.
I just got back from fishing their. I caught 3 stingrays and 1 pompano. I have been goin there for the past 4 years. Very fun
Love the video brother and awesome catches. This so reminds me of when I was young and used to live in San Diego. My mom used to take me and my brothers fishing out on the piers, ahhh the good times. Thanks for posting and sharing and for your support on my other channel, Half Black Gamer!!!!
Chicken Dinner!
I can't think of a better way to spend the day fishing from a pier or jetty and just catching whatever comes by. I meet some really great people and have a lot of fun. Hmmm might be time for some overnighters on a pier somewhere soon. Great video
I meet some not so great people... ha! 😂
Realistic Fishing well there are those people also. Haha
Pier fishing looks like a lot of fun. Great job
It is fun, I hope you get a chance to try it 😀
I saw that shark Bro!!!...Buddy you keep it realistic and fun...That brought back memories of fishing Bob Hall Pier in Padre Island,Tx!!!...Great Video Sir!!!
Thanks Fredo 👍
Nice catch. Seems like the same fishing experience I have in southeast Texas along the gulf. Thanks a bunch and still keeping it realistic. 👍
Looked like a ton of fun! That last sail top was wicked cool
I had a great time, thanks for watching GrubbZ 👍
Realistic Fishing yeah buddy!
Good job Alex, I really liked the look of that last catfish, I wouldn't mind catching one for myself some day!
It was pretty crazy looking 😀
Great video as always buddy, nice saltwater fishing action!Congrats on your fish!
Thanks Marshall 👍
Realistic Fishing Welcome buddy, thanks for your support!
Realistic Fishing .
Fishing from the pier is always fun.
👍
That's awesome! Love pier fishing. What a blast!
Oh man, its great 👍
Whiting are good eating... That's what Long John Silver's "fish planks" are... Once you get through the inch of breading. Lol.
MMMmmm breading... 😀
Yeah I'd fried up those whitening and croker
people eat dat shit ? LJS ?
I was thinking the same thing lol
@@cayogator Depends on what shit you're talking about.
I used to live over in Mississippi and fished the gulf often.
We used live shrimp and fished 4am to sun up and caught white and speckeled trout on a two jig set up one yellow on top and one white on bottom, tipped with the shrimp. The yellow caught the trout and the white caught the catfish.
The bite was over always at sun up.
Thats a little too early in the morning for my vacation. If I lived nearby I would try it. 👍
I live on the ms gulf coast
@@gavinpage1409 More specs over that way for whatever reason there aren't nearly as many now east of Mobile bay. Granted Red's are more same with Pompano so go figure.
I so a Texas rig and my own rigs when I fish and tie my own Fishing knots 👍💯fishing is all about having fun and enjoy the day 👍
Nice. I have to get out on an ocean pier fishing. Looks to be a great time and a great way to catch several species.
And there is a chance you can hook into something crazy big 🤘
Thanks for the follow Realistic fishing I’m a big fan of you an you’re channel. Just like you say all the time “Just Keep It Real” 👍🏾🐟🎣💯
👍
Nice finally out of the pond fishing
I dont do any pond fishing... 😂
Ha that’s funny I live in Minnesota and I took a trip there last March had a fun time and rented a pole off that same pier and caught a lot of pompano really fun time love it in Alabama going there this upcoming March too and I’ll definitely be at that pier!
Great video. I've never fished from a pier before. Looks fun.
It was a great time 👍
Watching the shark swim into the frame at 5:25 is crazy!
👍
That is so cool, I was just a few miles away this weekend and did some pier fishing myself. We got those cat's but no sail cats. also, a blue fish and spade fish. Bunch of bait fish
Sounds like a good variety 👍
Great job Alex!! You caught some pretty cool looking fish and those croakers make for good bait!!
I was catching catfish on em 😅
I like to use 1 oz weights when pier fishing with 1/0 circle hooks. catches everything !!! I even caught 25lb amberjack. Spinning reel is way to go for sure for ease
How would I get a 25 lb amberjack up to the pier?
Pier gaff. Or i've seen people land smaller fish with 3 feet wide nets.
Realistic Fishing I used what I mentioned above with 9-10ft cheap rod $20 and a 4000 size reel and chunk it far.
It was a rhetorical question. A beginner isn't going to invest in a gaff or a landing net if he visits the pier once on vacation 😂
@@RealisticFishing #40 braided fishing line and octopus hooks :) Braided will handle a heck of a lot more, also good for grouper. Just use a thick mono leader to allow for stretching. The braided doesn't cast as well to me as mono but your fishing from a pier, it also helps with snags etc.
Lols like fun! I need to try next time we hit the beaches.
I hope you get a chance, it was fun 👍
I fish at this pier all the time and I’ve caught sharks and huge redfish and drum and jack and everything and it’s my favorite place to fish
Awesome! I like visiting that pier on vacation 👍
Cool stuff buddy, going in June, can't wait
Nice! Good luck 👍
Just found your channel a few weeks ago and now I watch every video. Great job and love how you keep it realistic haha No BS
You are first! 🏆
I’m addicted to your channel
Thanks for watching 👍
*Beautiful Fishing Congratulations Fisherman!* 👍🎣🐟🐠😊
Thanks Suellen 👍
I love Gulf State Park! Great video!
Thanks for watching Backwoods 👍
Again with the multi-species. Great job
The same old bass over and over gets a little boring 😉
Realistic Fishing agreed.
Bro you deserve 500k subscribers... mark my words , you’ll be legendary my brother
Thanks Gloku 👍
I'm about to go to gulf shores so hope fully I will catch some fish
Im from Louisiana and i caught my first shark here. I came here for vacation and walked from my hotel which you can see from the background with my friend. We came around 11:00pm and stayed till around 1:30am. The best part was we did this while a tropical storm was taking place. A lightning bolt hit where that coke machine is sitting. But i cought my first shark with a live popino
Sounds like a wild time 👍😀
Nice going to be there at the end of the week
Thanks for the video. I'm not from Florida, I'm from New Jersey but this is still very helpful pier fishing advice.
You caught something before, you said, shark .was it to big to bring .,great video. Place looks little like coney island pier.. besides the water looks awesome and clear .keep on fishing. .
I have not seen anyone else use Shimano reels with the Quikfire trigger...I love em grew up using em...they have really advanced from the IX models....I use their Spirex models now...awesome reels...6.2:1 gear ratio!!
Greetings from south australia, only just came across your channel as I'm getting back into fishing after 10 years of not wetting a line. Loving the bargain buying you do as I'm trying to do it very cheaply (after giving all my "good" stuff away years ago). Where I am is a good 6 hour drive from any fresh water but still watching my way through all your vids. Keep up the good work, tight lines bro. Ps. watched your video about fishos and campers leaving rubbish behind, pulled up at a campsite last time out to see a giant dog turd (hope it was a dog!!) Left 6 foot away from the fire pit 😖😡😡😡
Thanks for watching 3x3, watch out for that dog sh*t 😅
Enjoyed gulf state park fishing thanks.
I fished off the one that was there in 1997 ( storm tore it up a few years later) we caught sheepsheads and a Spanish mackerel. Did watch a guy catch a jack that went around a pier and they had to pull his line up, cut it retie and the he reeled it in.
I hope I can catch a sheepshead there one day. I have seen em 👍
Awesome video. I love pier fishing. That's the first time I saw one of those catfish. We aren't allowed to shark fish on our piers either.
This one is right next to a beach. Attracting sharks is not a great idea. 😅
I honestly never really knew you did saltwater fishing as well, I grew up in Mississippi and I was honestly surprised you knew the names of these fish and the gar as well. I just figured you where on vacation lol.
I would like to recommend Pinfish as cut bait, Croaker seems to be most folks go to but Pinfish seem to be a gem for me, when given a chance try it you may like it as well.
I was on vacation.
Fishing there today and a fish pulled a big nice saltwater fishing rig right over the pier railing into the water. Some of us tried to hook it but whatever was hooked to it headed out into the gulf with the whole thing. That had to be a sinking feeling.
Wow, something big!
That was a cool looking fish.
👍
Dam great video man saltwater fishing looks fun would love to try it.
Its fun catching fish I can't catch where I live. 👍
@@RealisticFishing im in illinois, there is no fishing here anymore, if you dont know or have a secret little spot your done. i would rather drive 14 hrs to pensicola, fish for a day, eat great sea food and drive straight home than try to fish here anymore
I was reeling in a fish one time and a Shark came up from behind and bit it right at the Gill plates. I got it in and all that was on the hook was the head. You never know what your going to hook into while fishing in the ocean...... Thanks for sharing
That's a nice looking pier.
Saltwater cats are fun. Love fishing for them in the gulf when I go to FL. We want to see some snook
I dont know where to find them. Maybe next time I go on vacation 👍
"Hey, wanna see a shark? JK LOL Look at this Sabiki rig dudes." I saw jaws, stupid fish thief. Awesome video as always, sir!
I was talking to someone on the pier. There were sharks all over the place. But if you hook one, you have to cut the line. No Catching sharks allowed on that pier. 😉
Every time a shark is caught, Steven Spielberg loses an animatronic tentacle and Samuel L Jackson grows another testicle.
Since I live in FL this is a big help.
Love to see more of these pier vids
Thats cool, too bad its an 8 hour drive
I think I have that same green rod just a bit lager---hoping to catch some big catfish on it this year. Seems like circle hooks would be the go to for ocean fishing. Not sure though since I have only ocean fished three times in my life so far.
Not one tackle store or fisherman I talked to suggested circle hooks. 🤔
I didn't know you also did Pier fishing🎣👍 I love pier fishing🎣 pier realistic fishing🎣 👍💯keeping it realistic 💯% I remember when I was little my friend made me a fishing pole with a cocoa cola can and he used a spark plug as a fishing🎣 weight and a safety pin has a hook and monofilament fishing line
Hey, how about a Charter Boat Realistic fishing video? The great thing about fishing in the ocean is the wide variety of fish species that can be caught.
Costs too much for this guy.
That pier is beautiful!
👍
Carl Zluticky i live there in orange Beach beside it
Nice video. Catfish will eat anything lol. And whiting is good eatting if long enough. Thanks
Man,I used to love pier fishing as a kid. Great content as always,Alex!
Also,first,I think? 😂
Second! So close 👍
Great video would of love to see u hook that shark when u got the catfish at the almost 5min in the video I do enjoy watching ur videos so keep them coming
I would have to cut the line. No shark fishing allowed. 🤔
Have you ever tried Fishbites? I bought some last time I got to fish off a pier and caught a lot of whiting and some pompano.
I have seen them but never tried em.
Realistic Fishing
It was the first time I tried them. The best part is the *#$@! pinfish had trouble pulling them off.
Looks like you had good time
Its always fun when you're catching fish 👍
I just went to Galveston pier. I got an advice from the local there. If you use shrimp bait and get stuck right on to the pier pole you likely catch a sheep head. Sheep head like to eat of the pier poles. I caught two In 4 hour. Cool vid.
I saw them down there, but I couldn't get a bite. Around this pier, the bait to use is crabs if you want sheep heads.
Realistic Fishing yeah, i seen people out the catching the Crocker and taking to the end of the jetty. Crocker on a 2/0 circle hook no weight through the lips swimming freely. When it take off don’t reel in yet it just the Crocker getting spook. they where catching red like crazy. when went I saw five guys hauled up A 12 foot shark on to the pier. It was crazy a lot of blood.. Yet it was fun to watch. I wanna catch mullet next time. They where schooling and no one could catch one. Next time I bringing bread..
When u throwing live bait u should cut of any fins bc it gets in the current and stops good hook up
Hmmm.... I get leery when people say "You should"
Its recommended* lol
a follower is a follower im whit realistic fishing every were he goes nice video man
Thanks Octavio 👊
That was a beautiful catfish
The gafftopsail?
Yes.
😍
How did I not get that intro the first time I watched this 😂😂😂
Cool fish!
Thanks 👍
The first baitcast setup u got ready is actually my first bait caster
👍
I was hoping a shark would make an appearance
5:30
lol I wish you would have caught it, would have been interesting from the pier
Did you see they guy at the beginning. He cut his line right away. No Shark Fishing allowed.
Certain times of year the sharks are thick at that pier.
They don't allow shark fishing on that pier - catch one and they ask you to leave.
Great job Alex. I dont know if you saw your line but your getting a lot twist on your spinning reel.
All that salty line is coming off anyway 😉
Nice catch at 3:00 lol
Gotta be fast 😅
Hey can you make a video on how to clean a baitcaster after fishing saltwater
Nope, because I don't know how. But I will let you know if they fall apart. 😂
Realistic Fishing oh lol ok then hopefully they won’t
rinse it off at the end of the day in the shower in your condo/hotel. When you get back home (if you don't know how yourself) have the reel serviced, unless it is a saltwater specific baitcaster. Those will have different bearings.
I will take my chances. These are $10-15 reels. I am curious to see if anything happens at all.
nice sail top 😎😁
👍
Maybe a stupid question but why did you not grab the cat fish? Sorry we do not have any where I fish in Canada.
This particular catfish has venomous spines 😬
@@RealisticFishing Good to know! thanks
I know I'm a little late but you would probably like cedar point peer on dolphin Island im a regular and there sum good fish there
I have tried there before
@@RealisticFishing kk keep up the good work you have an amazing Channel
@@RealisticFishing and ur vids are the best
Can you do a video or two on how to put different rigs on the line. Can’t seem to find any that go into detail they just do it and name it then move on to the next
You should try throwing spoons in the surf you can catch all kinds of stuff
Maybe next time I visit. 👍
I've watched vids where people would catch baitfish like those small croakers and hook them through the back and cast them out and was catching big reds and snook and either a grouper or black drum. Maybe you should try that.
Maybe I would have no way to get them big fish up to the pier.
The videos I watched they were using a circle net.
I am a tourist, I dont want to spend an extra $60 on a hoop net for 1 day of fishing... capisce?
I understand, but in case you ever wanted to go for the bigger fish they are only $20 at Dicks Sporting Goods. I'm going next week and am thinking about going after the big reds and snook. Fingers crossed.
The big open waters on Michigan are unsalted . I would love to see a shark pier fishing.
This pier doesn't allow shark fishing. There might be piers that do... 🤔
Nice one,Pensacola in the house
That was close to where I was staying 👍
Hey, when you catch a catfish keep him held over the side when you release the hook you release the fish.. One step method lol.
That shark silhouette was awesome Love bottom fishing👊
Me too! Ya never know what you might get 👍
Love your channel!!! No hype, just honest to goodness fishing. Keep the videos coming!!!!
I love to fish of that pear
What's up with catfish? Is there something I should know about not touching them?
The hard head catfish has venomous spines. If it stabs you, it will swell up and be very painful. The gafftopsail is extremely slimy, it will get everywhere and stick to everything.
Good to know thank you so much for the info. Learn something new everyday ☺
Man you were out there all day. Hope you took some snacks.
Of course 👍
