I made mine before I ever seen this video so here's what I did I have a 22 road glide special oval air filter I drilled two holes in the back plate, I never removed the back plate I put tape over the throttle body opening. After drilling the 1/2" holes very carefully I put 5/8 grommets in(pain in the ass). I ran 6 mm ID fuel hose from breather nipples thru the holes in the plate to a T (1/4") directly behind the plate( its actually hidden) then I ran another hose from the T down behind the push rod tubes against the engine behind the exhaust pipe wired tied to the frame keeping it away from the exhaust to the black filter same one you're using in this video I made the inside almost like the one from DK custom I will post pictures and what it looks like. I used a piece of clear hose for inside the filter to the bottom of inside to the filter( drilled holes sideways thru the hose at the bottom for oil to escape into filter) then I slid a plastic spacer on hose then sponge, plastic spacer, sponge, plastic spacer then used wire tie to stop all of this from sliding down blocking the holes at the bottom of the clear hose. I tested it and it works great.
Just put that setup on my 2017 softail but I tapped both sides and put a tee at the bottom then the filter housing. It was a little long so I cut the bottom of the filter off and tapped the hole and put a set screw in the bottom wit some red loctite. looks good . Just a little to cold outside right now to go test it
Nice work, I feel its a better look than have a long hose down the side of the engine to the bottom somewhere, just keep it behind the filter!!! My bike came with a bypass breather with the long s/s hoses down the side under the engine, previous owner. I will be cutting them shorter and changing the small air filter to a catch can, and placing them up top behind the main air filter, just check it when you check your air filter!!! And its a cleaner look!!! 👍
Thanks Peter! Yeah, you can cut the hose as short as you wish adjusting the height that way. Mine is still tucked away nicely behind the big stock filter cover.
Hell of an idea bud! But I’d say keep the filter in so dirt and debris doesn’t go into the engine, the ports do suck air back in occasionally. I’m gonna do this idea man
Thanks bud! The problem with keeping the inside filter is that it’s likely to block the vents you drill at the top. But you can always experiment with it. For the same reason I put a piece of foam in to catch oil or what not.
Hi Aaron! I've manufactured the same as you did. I have drilled 6 holes with 3 mm each. I use also the 2 inch long 1/4 inch fuel hose. I installed it 1/2 hours ago. It's an fantastic idea! I didn't ride with the new catch can until now but I am curious if there ist some oil steam that will pass through these 6 holes... ?!?! Thanks for your awesome inspiration!!!! Rock hard, ride free!!! Best regards! Boneskaker from Germany I
How often do you find that it needs servicing? What are your thoughts about a single 2mm hole. I ask because I don't know how much pressure is created. Thanks again for your well made content and videos. Keep them coming.
Thank you. If you unscrew it, have a look, and potentially cleaning it out once a year will be fine. Mine had barely any residue in it after a year. One 2mm hole will probably do it. As long as the crankcase gas can get out.
You can make it better by extending the center intake down to the bottom, and add a cotton medium above so the oil vapor has to pass through on it's way up to your drilled holes, but it should be piped back into your intake after passing into and through catch can..
@@leehan73 for the long term, I believe to assist in maintaining internal vacuum, and the removal of the oil is more important than the re-introduction of a very small amount of hot air into the intake..
@ut1004bp internal vacuum isn't affected by venting the breather bolts externally as the stock head breather valves are one way valves so they do the job of keeping a vacuum

Hey bud. I'm trying to find that external breather kit but can't find one for a twin cam. Any clues where to find one. Hogparts only have for Evo and for sportster.
@@aronsgarage834 yea I have all the parts you advised except for the solid tube that runs between the breathers. I can find them for evos but not twin cam.
Ok guys I have to chime in and say I do not recommend this Aluminum Fuel Filter as a catch can...! It looks great but that aluminum is thin and the gas, oil, and moisture will eat tiny holes in the canister (in no time) that will cause it to leak and blow back all over on your exhaust, engine, and oil tank.! I used this very same Aluminum Fuel Filter after watching this video and 7 months later it was ate up with holes.! I wish I could upload a pic here so everyone can see it but don't do it lol use something else besides this... I suggest a small cone-shaped K&N filter from Advanced Auto or O'Reillys... I've used the K&N style before and they work excellent.! Its just not as pretty as this but it works great and doesn't look bad at all...
Thanks for sharing your experience! Nothing happened to mine in 2-3 years. Maybe yours have excessive blow by? how many miles did you do in 7 months? Also, did you drill vents?
@@aronsgarage834 approximately 2000 miles in the last 7 months and would check it monthly... Yes drilled vent holes in the top as you did... Did a 2 hour ride today and that's when I noticed all the shit blowed all over my exhaust, oil tank and engine... Looked a the canister and it was leaking out of 2 small holes on the front and rear side of the canister.! That shit ate through it like acid lol... Not your fault buddy but id keep a check on it often.! It will happen... If you have an email address I'd be happy to send you pics
You didn't offer ME a Free one so I'm going to unsubscribe. 😠 Just kidding 😄, but what a good idea. All the pre-made catch cans cost to much for what they are. I've never seen an aluminum filter like that one before. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for describing the catch can I under stude how to make my own.
Most welcome.

Awesome! I’m sure there will be some oil steaming. Especially on a longer highway ride.
Keep it rocking!

Do you have the part number to find that fuel filter

Steel wool instead of cotton.
@@djturnz Yea, very fine steel wool would be best
why would you pipe the hot air back into your intake? The whole idea is to keep it away from the intake.

What would you suggest. Two separate catch cans or both breather routed into 1 can?
Both breather routed into one should do it nicely.
@@aronsgarage834 ok! I would just have to find some type of splitter
Im looking for this item but i cant find it sadly. Do you have a link on amazon or ebay?
