Harley Twincam inner cam bearing removal/installation safely

Inner cam bearing removal and installation done on my 1999 Twincam 88. Removal, especially, must be done with care as failure rate is pretty high. It’s worth taking the extra safety measures.
Checking Crank Runout on Harley Twincam 88
มุมมอง 1K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Checking your runout is very important. Ideally, you would want to do it before you choose your upgrade (hydraulic tensioner kits or gear drive) I bought my Screaming Eagle upgrade kit 2 years ago (didn’t want to take it all apart to check), so went for the safe bet. Also, less expensive than gear drive systems.

I have a 2005 Deluxe with only 13k miles on it. I ordered the SE Cam plate with hydraulic tensioners, Cam chains, cam gears, SE high-performance oil pump, new bearings, and SE 204 cams..new stock lifters, I can't wait to feel and hear the difference. I decided to stay with the stock push rods because I wanted the solid push rods and didn't want the push rods to somehow come out of adjustment. What do you think about this setup? Thanks from the DAWG in the Show Me State..
Sounds great! I think the SE kit is pretty good, can’t go wrong with it. I also stayed with my stock push rods. The idea of cutting them just doesn’t sit with me. Good luck with your project! Let me know how it turns out
.42 is standard slow jet the upgrade to .45 is to eliminate coughing and stumbling.
42 was only standard in 99 models to my knowledge, then they bumped it up to 45 from 00 onwards
What’s the angle 18 degrees ?
Glad i have an 05 so i dont have to worry about this part. I have an 05 cvo screaming egal electra glide. Im going with the fueling cam plate an oil pump. I was going to have a shop press my bearings and cams in the new plate because i dont feel comfortable doing that yet and i dont have a press or the tools. Ive been in the cam chest one other time to replace tensioner shoes at 15k . It has 16 k on it now. One thing i didn't know was replacing the inner cam bearings when i was in it the 1st time. But that definitely on the objective list this time. Ill be getting my part in a week or 2 in the mail. I love the bike and its my new hobby. I got the bike for my birthday.
Congrats on your bike! These “older” Harleys still have character. I wouldn’t swap it for a new model. Good luck with your project!
Thanks 🤠
The old accelerator spring if you straighten it out , it’s perfect size to clean out those tiny holes in the jets and I used it to get the air mixture o ring out ,
You don’t run the voes? Your carb looks blocked off.
You should use the f.i. Clamps or the crimp clamps they look a lot cleaner or zip ties
Hi Aron, need to ask for your help. open air filter and open pipe. slow jet was #48, AF-Screw set properly cold start on choke 1300-1500 RPM. Still gettin a llittle cought though at 40MPH. Occured after putting different exhaust, I assume it has got more airflow now. Sparks look ok but I have an ignition with multispark on it. I decided to ugrade the slow jet to #50 but have not ridden it yet. . Should I play with the AF Screw again? What do you think about it? I would give it a try and come back to standard tuning ( #45, respect. #48, 3 outs on stock AF Screw) and start again from there if that would not work.
Hi Michael, Do you get the cough at 40 as the bike is still cold/warming up or at full operating temperature?
@@aronsgarage834 Hi Aron, only when cold. I went for a ride today (8 degrees Celcius) with the #50 slow jet. Went slow for first 5 min on full choke, cough once or twice but afterwards very good throttle response and acceleration. After 5min no choke and 1000RPM. No spitting, no coughing, no smoke I guess this is OK. I have the feeling the bike is pulling more now. Had the same setup with the air filter and exhaust in summer but slow jet #48. On a warm and sunny day still got coughing at 40MPH though. Do you think it was the jet then? or should I go back to #45 or #48 slow jet and raise / shim the needle instead? Got some decel popping also. I have not cleaned the carb in this year yet but it looked very clean though during the jet swap and the vacuum piston replacement ( it had to go, was old and I did redrill the hole which was not the best idea I guess). And I have put 2 fuel filters into the fuel line. I also installed DIY oil catch can last year, based on your video. Everything clean inside. now my setup is: full choke with 1400-1500 RPM cold no choke 1000RPM warm #50 Slow Jet #190 Main Sportster needle from 1988 ( prior fuel pump) running daytona twin tec ignition with multispark ON. 400ft above sea level Update: #50 is way to rich. Sparks fouled and soot inside the carb. So I took the carb off the bike today and performed the maintenance. Went back to #48 and put one shim under the needle. Main Jet left with #190. New sparks, the original AF Screw and will give it a go later in the afternoon
Yeah 50 slow is way too big. Even 48 was too big for me and didn’t run well full warmed up. I’m a big believer in the sock 45/190 set up with raised Sportster needle. It just runs like a dream, no coughing or popping and has done so for years now. My pilot screw is 3 and 3/4 out. Let me know how your test run goes. Ps: how long do you run the bike for on choke? It should only be 15-20 sec. If it needs more, it’s not set up properly.
@@aronsgarage834thanks for the answer. The manual describes the enricher application depending on the ambient temperature, when it’s cold, 3 min full choke than 2 min half. Will test it soon when the rain stops. I have already adapted your setup since the carb has been off the bike: slow jet #45, main jet #190, Sportster 88 needle raised up by 0.9mm, as per your video, Initial 3 and 3/4 turns out with the stock pilot screw. The only thing I need to adjust then is the idle screw with the engine running. Will let you know how it works. Thanks for your support, mate!
You’re right, per manual you need to run it for quite a while on choke. I only do around 20sec and then use the cruise control to keep it running at around 1000rpm. After 2-3 min I ride away 🙂 I’m curious whether my set up has worked for you now! Have you taken it out for a ride yet?
Thank you for your Videos Aron. Been very helpful to me.
Thanks, that’s great to hear.
Hey Aron. Very good and clear explanation. Cam chest opened again, a new project to come?
Thanks Michael. No, it was actually something I did back when I was doing the conversion, but forgot to edit it and post it. Just remembered lol. Bike’s been running great since the conversion 😀. Hope yours is running all well too!
Thanks i find very useful all off your Videos.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
@@aronsgarage834all good. I have put the chain Kit on it.
Good to hear 👍.
Thanks!, great video, very detailed!, I have a CV on my TC88 Harley Heritage that keeps having a cough as I leave the stop sign, at 1/3 throttle it coughs, the main jet further with more throttle is ok, I cleaned the jets and its been turned for the pipes and all, I think its a slow jet canal that you sprayed near the butterfly, I'll let you know how it goes! Thx again! ;o)
Glad it’s helpful! Yes, that passage can clog up real easy. Also, worth checking your float level, too. Let me know how you get on!
@@aronsgarage834 Hi, well, I sprayed all the canals as you did, put it all back together, then, this morning I went to start it, and it wont start WTH!! it ran fine except for the slight cough at 1/3 throttle, I took it apart again now and all the jets are clear, the float is fine, what the hell happened??? this sux!!!, it ran my new battery down trying so much...
There is something you would have have missed putting it back together as cleaning your carb thoroughly would never cause any problems. Did you re-set your mixture screw properly? How many turns out was it at when you removed it?
@@aronsgarage834 Hi, yes, I always am very attentive, it seems I had no spark "all of a sudden", so, checking the codes on the dash showed it was a crankshaft position sensor....so, I'll let you know more after it arrives lol fackin BS harleys! I'm going back to my Kawasaki ZRX1200R "Bulletproof!"
That’s interesting, I never had that problem. Yeah, let me know if you get it resolved.
awesome video
Thank you
Great carb videos, man! Got a brother’s 02 bagger that needs some carb attention & these vids will help tremendously when I start on it (I’m definitely carb naive lol)! Gona save these, as well as some of your other maintenance videos to a playlist for my own future reference!! Thanks for posting!!
Thanks man, appreciate the feedback. Glad the videos are helpful. Good luck with the project!
Very cool demonstration
Thanks
Where did you get the Tools from?? (Other than eBay) I do not buy anything from them. Thanks for your time.
I got them on EBay actually. You’d have to have a look at your local hardware store, but the special jet screwdriver you’re unlikely to find there.
@aronsgarage834 thanks for the info much appreciated 👍
I have watched many videos on this same topic. Your video was by far the most informative, detailed and comprehensive I have seen. Well done sir!
Thanks for that! I recall putting a lot of time and effort into this series. Good to know that it was all worth it.
Probably the best video for this project. And smart to method to do so. Thank you.
Appreciate that.
What’s the thread pitch on the Allen bolts?
It’s a 0.7 pitch
This is the best CV video out
Thanks, I appreciate that
they use to sell a kit with a slide that had extra holes in it. pure crap. bike would spit and sputter lucky if you got 20 mpg. curious if you ever ran that sportster needle without the shims
That's a lot for this video. Sound really good 👍
Thanks!
Holy shit. This has got to be the best and most simple and informative adjustment video Ive ever seen on TH-cam
I appreciate that
How do you adjust that if you have the exhaust that has the connector pipe right underneath the carb? Hot as hell.
Not sure if you have the connector pipe.
I have a 2006 Road King Custom. I have a 2 into 1 exhaust which i installed and a arlen ness super sucker air cleaner. My pipes are turning blue near the heads and i get hiccup/burp at steady throttle at 45mph. I currently have a 48 pilot jet and a 190 main jet which were installed when i received the bike. Which direction should i go into optimizing performance.
48 is plenty, if anything I’d go back to 45. They just run so well with stock jets (even with high air flow and open pipes) Potential air leaks? Have you checked your float height? Where is your pilot screw at?
@@aronsgarage834 no air leaks, the screw is about 2 turns out, i have not yet checked the float height.
What color are your plugs?
@@aronsgarage834 they are a tan/brownish color
Seems like you’re not lean. Would also be worth checking your slide (whether the port has been drilled out) or your spring ( should be stock). Are you using stock or performance needle? Many things to check as any of those could cause an issue.
What was your symptoms why did you delete the cam sensor. Put a newer module in???
Didn’t have any symptoms, but heard it can melt any time. Also, as I was doing the camchain tensioner conversion, I was able use the entire kit (new style camchain with gears). Basically, as I was doing this big project, I wanted to get rid of all the weaknesses to make it as reliable as possible.
Best video ever
Thanks for that
Thanks for describing the catch can I under stude how to make my own.
Most welcome.
Good idea, I prefer keep the rubber gasket inside do to the engine vibrations.
That’s was awesome, I’d literally pay just to have you do mine if you were around. I’ve probobly never seen such a precise and thorough mechanic such as you sir… 👏
Thanks a lot, that’s probably the best feedback I’ve ever gotten. Much appreciated
Thanks. Ride safe.
Welcome, have a good one 👍
hey Aron, do you mean that if i have problem in my cps 1998 evo, i can bypass it and it will run normal?
Hi Peter, Not sure if you can by-pass it in an Evo. It’s easy to bypass it in a Twincam as you can swap out the ignition module for a later one.
Hey there , can I contact you somehow different from youtube ? Just wanna ask for your help about an evo motor with cv carb :) Greetings from Bulgaria!
@@nikituu123 hey bud, sure thing. Send me an email and we’ll take it from there :) aaron.vetesi@gmail.com
But you are not turning the screw a full turn….? On every carburetor I have adjusted a turn it’s not just twisting it. One full turn is from 12 o’clock to 12 o’clock…. A quarter Turn would be 12 o’clock to 3 o’clock ….. One1/2 turn would be from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock. ….! This is how I have always done it. This is how it is always worked. …👍🏻
Best float adjustment video explained.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
@ 3:52 you say make sure it goes in the right way. Which is the right way?
The end with bigger diameter bore goes in and will be sticking out in the carb throat
One side is tapered and the other side flat. The tapered side goes in first. The flat side will seat against the emulsion tube. The tapered side upwards toward the needle.
Next time try spinning the vise around so the fixed jaw is against the brass fitting. Watching you tighten on the sliding jaw had me wincing a few times wondering if it was going to track as the jaw moved slightly. Other wise great video!
Excellent video
Thank you
i tried to find it im sure you said it but its 2 turns out once you level it?
Yeah roughly, but you still want to fine tune it while bike is idling.
@@aronsgarage834 i had no real starting point. never ridden it before. it (cv40 on 2001 tc88") was 4.25 out. it splutters if i gun it but slow rollon on is ok at 2.5 out. but now im taking it off as i write to find out the leveling off. i rebuilt the acc pump but left the 190 and 45 jets as were. also didnt touch the slide or top. looked quite clean. was nt started for two years only 20000km on it. so ill get back to " baseline" + circa two turns out then take it for another spin. hassle to take all off again. i have state control tomorrow
Yeah it’s good to take it off and check it over. 45 and 190 are good. 👍
Par Number??
Great video mate. Is there any structure for jet selection? Does idle screw setting have any effect on this mixture tuning?
Thanks. Yes, it’s best you stick with stock jets (Twincam 88 > 45 slow and 190 main) and adjust mixture screw accordingly. Unless you’ve swapped out the cams. The idle screw doesn’t affect the tuning.
Heres some insight from my school bus mechanic father. When ever possible never pry steel metal, like tools against aluminum motor cases. So before you pried with screwdriver he would place some kind of contact protection pad. Hes had one too many, "Oops" moments! One thing no one shows is "hard to remove, because of heat, exhaust pipe mounting bolts. The rubber boot around electrical unit by oil filter is poorly designed closure. These pads are poor design. Im replacing pads with accessory plate hydraulic pads. I'd like to put chain drive, but not cost effective?
Great and very helpfull vid. Thank you. Now my Sportster XL1200C 1999 model (screaming eagle pipes and k&n high flow filter) seems to be having a shortage of fuel. Gonna try 45 (was 42) main jet and a 180 (was 170). Should that do the trick? Or bigger jets?
Yes, you should bump up the slow jet to 45 and the main to 180. Later on it was standard anyway on the 1200 Sportster.
Thanks. Good video!
Thanks!
I made mine before I ever seen this video so here's what I did I have a 22 road glide special oval air filter I drilled two holes in the back plate, I never removed the back plate I put tape over the throttle body opening. After drilling the 1/2" holes very carefully I put 5/8 grommets in(pain in the ass). I ran 6 mm ID fuel hose from breather nipples thru the holes in the plate to a T (1/4") directly behind the plate( its actually hidden) then I ran another hose from the T down behind the push rod tubes against the engine behind the exhaust pipe wired tied to the frame keeping it away from the exhaust to the black filter same one you're using in this video I made the inside almost like the one from DK custom I will post pictures and what it looks like. I used a piece of clear hose for inside the filter to the bottom of inside to the filter( drilled holes sideways thru the hose at the bottom for oil to escape into filter) then I slid a plastic spacer on hose then sponge, plastic spacer, sponge, plastic spacer then used wire tie to stop all of this from sliding down blocking the holes at the bottom of the clear hose. I tested it and it works great.
I have a 2005 dyna wide glide. I put an aftermarket air breather on and now my bike runs like crap. Do i apply the same methods here? Do i need bigger jets and needles? Please help!
You don’t have to get bigger jets. Your stock one are 45 and 190. And you only need a different needle if you want more power. You just need to adjust the slow jet for now. Count the number of turns it’s set in now, (by screwing it all the way until it lightly seats as you’re counting. Assuming your stock setting was around 1 3/4 turns, set it 3 turns out. See how it runs and perform the fine tuning method I show in my other video (while bike is idling) Let me know how you get on.
@@aronsgarage834 I'm actually having a hard time getting that screw to move. I'll try letting it warm up a little and try it then
Yeah, you can try it that way. If no luck, you might have to take the carb off and soak it with wd40.
Hi! Great video, thanks!!! I ask for advice. The TC88 engine, instal Andrews TW 26. Arlen Ness air filter stage 1. Direct-flow exhaust system V&H short shot. How do I adjust the carburetor? Which jets should I install?
Hello Aron, Nice video👍🏻. I have a problem with mij dyna tc 1999. My fuel consumption is terrible. It was 1 to 18, 1 liter on 18km Nou it's 1 to 8 😢😢 I completely cleaned the carburateur and refurbished the carb. Do you have an idea what it can be. Hoop to hear from you. Kind regards, Mike
Hi Mike, Mine is a 1999 Dyna too! Did you install the needle jet the right way? Goes back in either way and can cause issues with consumption. Float level all ok? Pilot screw adjusted? What jets and needle are you running?
@aronsgarage834 45 and 190. This problem started 4 weeks ago. I have no idea why?? It doesn't smell like fuel, no black smock out of the exhaust.
Did you double check all those things I mentioned?
Hi Aron, yes I did. I have bin driving to day and still 1 to 8
Then I would check a few other things: tire pressure, brakes, wheels (to make sure they aren’t dragging), air cleaner, choke/ enrichener, diaphragm on the slide, engine oil level, exhaust, any gas leak.
I can show you years of statistics on my Harley with fuels an oils, oil fortifies! I found something in 1989 at Portland sportsman's show. I have friend that manager of suburban propane going conversion.with Dyno tuner. We measured before an after on this product an was shocked by performance. So I've kept records since that 1989 timeline. I taught math in school with father doing all school district bus maintenance, so this study I treated us both! Leave comments if you want more information on cooler running, more hp, better wear protection!
This is my 03' FXDX Dyna so I'll pay close attention.
