The other half is not messing up and choosing a bust, such as Kwame Brown or Anthony Bennett. In this video, we’ll talk about the franchises who made the right choice, and who didn’t mess up their top selection. Here are the best number one picks in NBA history.

I would put Tim Duncan at the top of my list because he was drafted by the spurs and spent his entire career there. As an organization that's the dream for your first overall pick.
Edit: It's hilarious how people are popping off in the comments in ways that aren't even relevant to the question. If you are an organization, and you have the retrospect of seeing how the players careers have turned out, who would you rather have? Tim Duncan gave the most to a single franchise out of all the number 1 picks. It's not "who would win in a 1v1" or "who would give your team a higher peak" the question is "what player provided the most for the organization they were drafted by" because as an owner that is ALL you care about. What does the player provide for ME. I want Duncan more than anybody else because (reiterating here) he provided the MOST to the FRANCHISE he was DRAFTED by. There now hopefully the LBJ fan boys can stop commenting, but they probably won't read all of this.

Mvp, defensive player of the year, a season rebound leader, seaon scoring leader, seaon blocks leader, rookie of the year, scored over 70 points in a game, only 1 of 4 players in nba history to get a quadruple double, (i think Robinson is the last player to ever get a quadruple double in mba history) 2 time nba champion by willingly and unselfishly stepping it down for Duncan, mentored and basically coached the greatest power foward of all time while still playing. Also 10 all stars, 10 all nba teams, and 8 all nba defensive teams. Not to mention didn't play 2 years in his prime because he went to the military instead for 2 seasons. And gave up being a statistical beast for at least another 2 seasons of his prime to give Duncan the team and mentor Duncan.
Robinson is one of the best centers of all time. But doesn't get love because he was very humble and lowly. And he would always get doubled, tripled, and quadruple teamed in playoffs before Duncan got there.

He didn't get #1 because for most of his championships, the best player on the team was someone else. He was only FMVP for 2 times out of his 6 titles. But he certainly deserves #2 spot over Magic for he won more championships and in 2 different cities. Lebron is a more versatile player. He's a Magic but with more scoring ability, and more power. When all is said and done, he'll have more points than Kareem, he'll have the 3rd most assists. In the playoffs he already has the most points, and 2nd in assists. He's won championships for 3 different teams, 4 FMVP on 3 different teams. He not only changes team success, he changes teams' value everywhere he goes.

I would put Tim Duncan as the best 1st draft pick. Mainly because he stayed all his career in the franchise and that is the ideal thing for a team in case of a hystorical player. Also, the Spurs had never won a championship until Duncan arrived. The organization proceeded to win the 1999 NBA Finals in Duncan’s second season and added four more throughout his 19-year career.
Along with the five titles he won, Duncan’s awards include 15 All-Star selections, 15 All-NBA selections, 15 NBA All-Defensive Team selections, two NBA MVPs, three NBA Finals MVPs and 1997-98 NBA Rookie of the Year. Some of these accomplishments being records of the most in a NBA player.
