People have to give David Stern a lot of credit. His vision for expanding the league globally has paid off. And he really did help save the league in the 80s.
Seeing the Greg Oden pick is so sad. Dude was the most hyped bigman since Shaq, had an unbelievable skill set. Shame he had that leg length surgery and it ruined his career
What's infuriating about that pick is that if we knew what we know now about what kind of play style is actually valuable in basketball, Kevin Durant would've been the number 1 pick 100 times out of 100.
It's ironic that, David Stern's 1st selection as a chairman in 1984 was Hakeem (an all time great) while the last selection in 2013 was Bannett (an all time bust)
@moneyman4740 well, 2 weeks after right? Didn't play a single game for the hornets, so yeah, could say draft day still. The GM said they had no use for kobe at the hornets and needed a center so hence got traded to lakers.
Patrick Ewing looking 35 on draft day 😂 Knicks were never a team I rooted for, but Ewing was great and man, that guy would drop sweat at the free throw line 😂

Exactly, you don't play in the nba for ten years and not be good at basketball. Unfortunately he's the minimum talent in the nba and gets compared to the rest of the players on top of him.
@@HumbleRumble420 Ayton isnt bad but Luka is generational and the Suns missed out. has been 1st team All-NBA since his second year, averaged close to a 30 point triple double this year even when he was fat and injured for half the season. but you guys were trying to contend and drafted for fit, i get it even if i still think it was a mistake. it definitely sucks more for the Kings and the Hawks to be fair.
Now this may be out of time and i am wrong but... after seeing most of the them stand up before their names are called, it makes me wonder if anybody stands up and starts celebrating but then they select someone else.
You'd have to be more specific. Most of them were actual good players but for a short amount of time, like Brad Daugherty, Mark Aguirre, Glenn Robinson, and Derrick Coleman . Many of them were also superstars for a while, like Chris Webber and Larry Johnson. A few of them were busts. A few were solid role players like Elton Brand and Kenyon Martin, and a few were journeymen like Danny Manning, Joe Smith, and Andrew Bogut. Hardly any of them were "specialized" players though.
@@YpsitheFlintsiderI’d argue Andrew Bogut wasn’t a journeyman. Not a superstar but he was one of the best defensive centers in the league in his prime and him coming to Warriors changed their defensive identity.

Up until Derrick Rose onwards, nba teams had almost always drafted big men. AI getting drafted number 1 in 96 was something special.

What's infuriating about that pick is that if we knew what we know now about what kind of play style is actually valuable in basketball, Kevin Durant would've been the number 1 pick 100 times out of 100.
Oden was considered a generational talent. Someone who'd be on par with Tim Duncan
I was so hyped to see him on the court!!! Sadly, it was taken away so fast because of his injury. But during that time, he deserves the #1 spot.
As much hype did Oden receive Tim Duncan still had more
He had a hard time getting up in that draft lol
It's ironic that, David Stern's 1st selection as a chairman in 1984 was Hakeem (an all time great) while the last selection in 2013 was Bannett (an all time bust)
