    This is the set-up I use as well. If you swich to xrender instead of openGL or turning off the compositor, you still get a few of the desktop effects, without the slow down.
    Curious if you have this problem. Although it IS connecting to the internet, the network manager always says networks are unavailable.

      @@obvious_giraffe8386 @leepspvideo Was looking for an answer, then saw this pinned.. forgot if it was wpasupplicant or dhcp being the conflict with KDE.. Actually, if you installed KDE plasma using Pi OS lite all you'll need to do is ::
      sudo apt install plasma-nm
      sudo systemctl disable dhcpcd ... you may want to stop the service first before disabling it, just to be safe
      reboot your pi.

    Personally, I love KDE Plasma. It is a very beautiful desktop environment. Shame though that the compositor needs to be turned off on the Pi to get adequate performance :( Even without the fancy effects its still a visually-appealing interface. If you ask me, Feren OS has the best version of the KDE Plasma desktop. The only drawback is that Feren OS is Intel/AMD x86_64 only and doesn't support the Pi.

    i tried exactly the same thing on my pi400 and kept losing the cursor. rebooted after first time and had mouse until i did the keyboard shortcut to use pi key launcher and my mouse disappeared. had to rewrite pi64 to my sd card and start over again Without this KDE desktop and just keep pi desktop environment. been playing with pi400 for several months and every time i try making changes like the rest of the planet like this, my distro gets corrupted and i have to start over. im sticking to the default, tired of reinstalling apps.
    wish i would have had better luck, oh well, at least i have the tried and true default desktop.

    Good walk through. You do know that 2147 mhz was a limitation of a 32 bit number in firmware, right? Now it's a 64 bit number, it's a rather oddly specific value to overclock to. I usually drop 2100 and voltage 6. You are at 8? Brave! Out of warranty limit iirc.
    But how fast does it go at 8? (with cooling)

    I am in the midst of installing this exact setup. I have started to install it under the default username of 'pi'. This has proven to be a mistake since I want to be able to RDP to this setup BUT I cannot do so because xRDP will not allow more than one instance of a username to be logged in at once. Since all services seem to run under the user 'pi' I have had to create another username in order to rdp to into this machine. Here is the problem. If I now RDP into this machine under a different username - it opens up with the default Raspberry pi desktop - without any of the things I have installed in this video.
    Is there a method of installing all your updates so they affect all users or am I better off starting all over again and adding a new user at the beginning. I took the day off work to do this today and have spent all day buggering about with xRDP and got nowhere. Very very frustrating limitation of xRDP. Clearly not your fault. I find your videos extremely informative and helpful and very well produced - so a massive thumbs up and thank you.
    I do enjoy messing with linux but my god when you hit a a brick wall it tends to be made from concrete and about 10 feet thick.
    😥

      Usb boot should work if you don’t have an sd card in the slot. Put the sd card in after your os has booted from usb and you can access it as a drive in most operating systems.

    ~~Skip Steps 1 to 3, if you have been starting KDE using "sudo systemctl start sddm".

    You said if you have an FN on your keyboard you need to type that as well... well all of my keyboards and BIOSes are configured for the function keys are Standard FUNCTION keys not the extend function keys BS. I have several programs that extensively use the function keys so I do not want the when I need to press F2 rename or press F5 to copy from one pane to another pane in my favorite 2 pane file manager to have press another key to make the function keys work as they were intended to work since the birth of the 101 keyboard. I seldom use the extended Function Keys. Even the Logitech Windows keyboard that I have connected to my Mac uses the Function keys as standard Function keys and I have to use FN to change to the rarely used extended functions. I use the same Logitech K800 keyboard on 5 of my 7 computers. The 2 others I don't use it on are laptops. If KDE is going to change this I will stick with the standard Raspberry Pi OS 64bit desktop or Cinnamon (so I have the same experience on Pi as I do on my Linux Mint desktop top.)

    • @leepspvideo
      @leepspvideo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not a KDE thing. My Logitech keyboard shares the numbers with the F keys to make it more compact. Just like a lot of laptops you need the function key to access some other keys. You can use whatever shortcuts you like, as shown in the video I only press the Windows key to access the menu.

      leepspvideo Was about two weeks ago. No worries, i'll tell you again lol Recently picked up a Pi 400, with Raspberry OS on a SD card I used an overclock of 2.3Ghz on the CPU with a 750hz overclock on the GPU and saw it was still a bit slow. Found out that even when using Raspberry OS on a 400 or a PI4 8GB, it still sets up a page file. So even on a Pi 4B with 8GB, anything that uses ram goes to the page file first and not the ram. I disabled the page file with this command: sudo systemctl disable dphys-swapfile.service I then loaded up a 4K demo on TH-cam (Sony 4K demo) using Chromium 95/98 (whatever is the latest installed on Raspberry OS) played it at 1080p 50FPS and to my surprise I only dropped 7 frames at the beginning of the video. Played another video and dropped about 7-9 frames at the beginning and that was it. Tried with Twister OS but it kept crashing for some reason that I have not figured out yet but on Raspberry OS I can repeat the same test and get the same results

    Thanks for the video. A few questions. What are the primary advantages to using KDE vs Pixal? Does it load down your system at all or does it seem just as responsive overall? Why do you use it? Are there any problems with KDE that you find annoying (other than the Win key becoming inoperable when switching themes)? Regarding themes, what are the best repositories for KDE themes?
    Appreciate any help.
    On another subject, you seem to show the 240G Crucial SSD but you aren't showing the Amazon links for it (just the 120G version). What is that exactly and how are you connecting that to your Pi?

    • @leepspvideo
      @leepspvideo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t noticed any impact on speed. I do find it much more intuitive to launch apps and many other functions (shown in tomorrows video) I also prefer the aesthetics.
      I have added the SSD and usb sata cable links. I use mostly the short usb sata linked in my UK store. I also use the ugreen cable linked in the US and other countries section.

      Thanks for the info and updated links. I did recently purchase the 120G SSD from Cytron (Makerdisk) and the uGreen USB 3 cable but haven't installed yet. I see you did a video recently about this SSD and comparisons with the M.2 version. What is the main reason for going with M.2 vs SSD? How much faster do you find the M.2? And difference in built quality and how much better may one hold up over the other? I try not to be too rough on my gear but I am always carrying my Pis around in a carrying case and want to minimize any problems. Lastly, in your continued use of these 2, which do you like better and why? Appreciate any info you can share. Thanks

    Years and years ago -- before Linux was even an idea -- I predicted that eventually, home computers would "grow into" Unix. Now even SBCs have so many choices of Linux flavors that it's difficult to keep track of all of them.
