    Just a heads up for anyone interested. Using the kde1-Pi5 image in the link below on a Pi 4 [ 8 | 4 ] is much more stable than if you built the same image on a Pi 4 following the instructions from the video. Test and review but it's a far better image to deploy than one built on Pi 4 using Bookworm and KDE-Plasma.

  • @revgen11
    @revgen11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks. I'll give this a go when my Pi5 arrives. I tried Ubuntu 23.10 with my Pi4 and chugged a bit. I suspect KDE won't be much different, so I'll stick with PiOS Bookworm for the Pi4.

    funny how you backed up the sdcard image.
    I was doing the exact same thing 1 hour ago when I got a reliable brand micro sd card and copied the OS from the cheap sd card to the new reliable sd card (using the hard drive on my laptop as the image cahce).
    I just used the dd command to backup and restore.

      @SchoolforHackers ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love dd. Just remember that if you dd a corrupted disk, you may copy the corrupted blocks too, depending on your drive’s SMART capabilities. SD cards don’t support SMART, for example.

      @@SchoolforHackers true, thats why I made an image after setting the whole OS up as intended.
      Also a different approach would be to script up everything into an installer script to take a basic install back to a configured OS. I do this for my Pi Zero 2w dnla media server. just a shame 128Gb of films takes so long to restore back. lol

    You inspired me! Loaded KDE on my Pi4 running Bookworm, so far so good except I've discovered that wayvnc won't run with Wayland Plasma. Apparently wayvnc only works with wlroots based Wayland compositors so it won't work with KDE. Not a huge issue in my case but I thought a heads up might be useful.

    • @bo-bodad8253
      @bo-bodad8253 ปีที่แล้ว

      VNC is a remote desktop protocol that allows you to connect to the Pi desktop from another computer over the network. Earlier versions of Pi OS used realVNC but with the switch to Wayland it was replaced by wayvnc. I used VNC to remote into my Pi from my Mac computer so I didn't have to switch monitors, keyboard and mouse from one to the other. Many people use it to connect remotely over the internet. @@igiigiint

    Is KDE really an "Operating System" as you called it at the starrt? Its my understanding that it is what would be considered a Window Management System or Desktop Environment ;). It sits on top of many different "Operating Systems", like Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, you name it really, KDE ships with most major flavors of Linux. Oh the pedantic nuanced complicated world of Unix like operating systems. I love every minute of it. It just wouldn't be what it is without the inevitability that none of us can possibly speak on the subject for very long without running into many erroneous statements coming out of our mouths on the infinitely complex ecosystem that it is. That's why it's so freaking awesome tho
    I appreciate that you covered your backup procedures, as that is as important as ever when you are a Linux user.
    Losing your data to a drive failure doesn't just mean your documents are gone... It means hours, if not days, of tiny tweaks and refinements to how everything works are gone. And hours worth fixing weird bugs and incompatibilities, all gone. All worth it tho. Once you get a Linux environment tuned to your preferences and workflow, you are probably easily 20x more productive than a windows or Mac user. And that's an understatement. Backups are key to keep your investment into making it what you want it to be to keep moving forward with you.

      @@leepspvideo I'm effectively a new Linux user, and the pi5 is my first pi device. My two wireless options are to solve why I'm getting 56 B/s down and 44 B/s up (or 0 down 0 up intermittently), or get plasma to recognize and use a Linksys wusb6300v2 connected to a powered USB 3 hub. I should try to solve both, as I can't rely on using my phone as a wifi dongle
      Edit: I ended up flashing a new microsd with pi os, starting from scratch, which seems to have resolved the strange issue. I'll start with a fresh plasma install, and go from there. The problem first cropped up well before trying plasma, so I think I'm in the clear.

Cannot get it to NOT look like PI OS. Is this normal? Please advise. At first I thought I left the wrong card in. Ubuntu loaded fine

Lakka gave me a tip when it wouldn't run, and it said to try adding os_check=0 to the config to see if it works. It didn't work still. Maybe it'll work for something else?

    installed pi -lite os and after that KDE plasma , does work but browsing not possible , Falkon browser tries to load UTF-8 , installed the fonts, but can not display webpage, so switching to Ubuntu as on my other pi , have rpi5 with neo 5 case with nvme drive, update installed newest rpi-os with desktop 64 bit on nvme and only get the login screen from plasma and afterwards rpi os desktop switched in rpi-config to waylend but does not boot into plasma , , the way to g is install rpi os lite 64 bit on nvme but that does lead to utf8 problems , no page in browser, rpi os desktop is fine it's fast , in windows use the startmenu not anmore, just type it in the searchbar and it works fine, kde plasma is not the most optimal to tinstall on a rpi 5 is my conclusion.
