Well in theory if the average point in the desert is y=65, then the tallest possible cacti would be between 190 and 200 blocks tall depending on the depth of the surface
It should actually be possible to get a cactus higher than 255 blocks, a chunk is 16 x 16, thats 256 blocks not including height, so highest possible is 768 which is VERY rare, however, you'd find a ton of cactus falling down from the sky once you load the chunk. Or above y 256, they just wouldn't spawn
it's good to note that coding projects like these can actually help a person's resume. it might look like it's just about trying to find a tall plant, but it also shows off their skills in coding, problem visualization, algebra, and data manipulation.

One thing I've wondered for years is if there is any theoretical possibility of a naturally forming nether portal in Minecraft. (Of course, before 1.16's partially generating portal structures) My thought process behind the idea is that, in caves, random occurences of single blocks of water/lava form in the walls, as well as random aquifers (pools of water or lava underground) from time to time. If a naturally forming frame is even theoretically possible, what about lighting it naturally? Abandoned Mineshafts that generate near lava can catch on fire, and perhaps that block of wood that catches on fire could be directly up against the hole of the portal and potentially light it up.

ElrichMC manually found a naturally spawned 7 block tall cactus, in his series "Nomadic Flactore Desert". he didn't use any programs, just started to run and run on a flat desert world and found the cactus the day he planned to finish the series, minutes before the time he had planned to give up.
It's an effective trick. If you go and watch his videos in chronological order, you see that the percentage of people who actually subscribe increases every time.
