The amount of money required to press charges and proceed through a court system like New York that won't penalize or charge it as a felony due to not being over their felony amount is worthless waste of money to Chase
Why would Chase bank have their software setup that way? With every ATM I’ve ever used, you have to enter your PIN number again to do a second transaction. This was bound to happen with such an obvious vulnerability.
They have card readers everywhere they don’t need the pin they can get the pin thru the reader ….the 7/11’s the gas stations, atm’s there everywhere the banks have to come out with better tech
It was probably four cents cheaper per ATM this way. Typical Chase, really. The people involved need to contact the FDIC to get their money back--security cameras record everyone using the ATM and Chase can see it's not the account holders making these withdrawals.
Dude, I take my s777 off safety if I'm at an ATM, and I check the machine for any loose items, like skimmers, while maintaining 360 situational awareness. Conceal carry permits should be deemed federally illegal and against the constitution. In my state, I don't need that trash.
Personally I never use an atm. If I need cash I go directly to my bank and talk to a human banker who will ID me and know who I am. Can’t believe how stupid some people can be…
At first I thought perhaps when tapping, some signal was sent out which could be intercepted by a phone app. Glad I was wrong in this case, but still . . . . .
People are so focused on their convenience, they are astonished they have to stick around a few seconds longer and explicitly close out their session with the ATM.
because the feature is new so people do not know. when you insert your card, it tells you to remove your card. when i tap on the cashier, i never have to wait for a close section, so the people here probably thought the same. chase should have placed a message regarding that at the beginning of the transaction
It's utterly disgusting how Chase refused to do anything to help the victims -- *THEIR OWN CUSTOMERS* -- until the media stepped in, (rightly) threatening them with bad press. I'm glad I don't bank with them.
I quit using Chase when they demanded appointments just to open an account for my son. Apparently, they don't even have someone on staff to open a new account, you have to make an appointment, often a few days in advance, to create a new account. Sorry! I'm not a number, and won't do business like that.
It is not. This is clearly a customer mistake (100% stated in the contract clause). But at least they should provide the video evidence. There is some possibility of class action suit due badly programmed ATM, though.
If those customers were using an ATM from any other bank, they would’ve done the same stupid stuff. They would’ve walked away from the ATM with their account. Still logged in and gotten ripped off there too. It doesn’t matter what bank, the bank at their behavior would’ve been the same.
This is why I always linger around to make sure that I’ve fully exited out of my account. I don’t trust people to not take advantage of my foolishness.
Yeah honestly I feel like that’s just people not being careful, like there’s this big question on the screen, why would you just walk away instead of first hitting no?
hi ascension have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. I got it in my about tab.
I work at a bank and this has an easy fix: The host/network can change the ATM load so it requires a PIN entry before EVERY transaction. So even if someone waits for you to leave, and chooses yes for more transactions, they'll need to re-enter your PIN to actually complete the withdrawal. edit: I'm really surprised a FI as large as Chase isn't already setup this way.
someone who has no idea how another company works gives their input and criticism without any prior knowledge. Seems to be getting more common these days and not for the better. I bet if you ran passed stop sign and got a ticket you would blame the cop for your negligence huh?
I've gotta be honest, if you do not insert your card, Chase ATMs should not keep you logged in. When tapped, they should change it to make it log out after every transaction, or at least require you to tap the card again to keep making transactions.
You have to put ur pin in again to allow it to start operst8ng again. I have chase and tested this myself because u can just walk away or hit no for another transaction
@@MikeDubbau that's what I thought as I do bank at Chase. Although the issue is with walk up ATMs, the person behind you can watch you enter your pin and end up using the pin to access your account again.
Seriously. As a web developer who has set up payment systems on websites that process credit card transactions, that is sloppy security or lazy programming. We take security far more seriously on websites than they do at banks. Go figure. Let's add near field communications to these terminals without thinking It it through. What could possibly go wrong. Wire the reader in and treat it like a second stripe reader. But wait, the other reader keeps your card until the session is over, could that be a problem? Nah... How could that be a problem? Lol.
That's dumb. The pin is guessable or peekable. The chip or phone is a physical device. It would be far more logical, security-wise, to ask the person to tap again to continue. The pin simply verified who they were, but the chip, phone or card is the key. You should need the key for each transaction, not the pin.
But let's listen to TH-cam influencers about money, it's safer because it's on the internet. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Critical thinking, folks. FDIC doesn't care about you. Banks can do this same thing, it's called bail-in's.
These lowlifes make me sick. There's nothing I loathe more than people that scam others out of their money. I think it's absolutely ridiculous that the bank's not willing to cooperate to identify the scammers. That's just going to embolden more of them to do the same thing because they don't think they'll ever be caught.
The banks are designed to scam people out of their money too you know. Also, that is what rich people are all about. Politicians make laws to allow these people and institutions to do it with impunity.
Thieves and Robbers must be punished! One of the best ways is that when get a job they are penalized 15 percent til fully paid off of their crimes!! Or simply jail time! Good video showing how customers FAILED to log out!!!! They should have had noticed how a stranger gave strange advice!!
I just witnessed this the other day when I visited my BoFA ATM in NorCal -- a man ahead of me walked away from the ATM, I walked up, and noticed he didn't press the "Yes, I am finished" button. I did it for him. People these days are so distracted and preoccupied I'm not surprised...
I feel like people can be easily distracted. As well as normally using an ATM locks your card so there's the added reminder that you're still logged in
Because that’s the only stupid bank that allows that to happen that’s why. Bank of America makes closes the transactions automatically when you take out money even if you haven’t finished and if you want to do another transaction even if you don’t take it but just transfer it makes you use your card again.
Because many people aren’t used to the tap function. Normally after you get your card back from the slot the machine is finished with your account. But if you tap, even though you have your card, the machine is still giving access to your account. So if you don’t think about it, you figure you’re safe because you have your card. They should reprogram the machines so that after you tap you can only get cash once; if you want more you have to tap again.
Apparently, because it normally exits after one transaction when using the insertion mechanism as has been my limited ATM experience. I always check though by nature.
Banks: We destroyed the economy, bail us out for billions or everyone crashes with us. Customer: Someone stole $2000 of my money from your machine. Chase: Not enough for us to bother with.
Why should it be Chase's problem? These people are idiots if they are going to walk away with the session still open. This is why we have to have withdrawal limits. There has to be a protection in place for stupid people.
@@Douglas_I because the criminal vandalized their atm and was loitering committing bank fraud for an extended period of time displaying a serious security issue to the safety of their automated teller space. Then withholds the camera footage from the account holder who should be able to see all ATM footage during the time that the bank claims they were conducting authorized transactions. If they're authorized you should have the photos shown to me grabbing out the money multiple times within minutes of the security request is made by the account holder.
@@fried0nion503 Vandalism can be easily fixed with a technician. Stolen money victimizes the person withdrawing funds, so it is up to them to address that.
I've noticed this on my local Chase Bank ATM screens. There's a function in the Chase ATM software so when you switch the type of transaction you're doing (such as balance check to a transfer between accounts), it'll ask if you want to do something else and require you pick YES then re-enter your PIN before it'll perform the second transaction. IF you just withdraw money the Chase ATM screen asks if you want to do something else after the withdrawl and you have to affirm 'NO' or 'YES' before it closes out. If the thief is right there he can slip in after you walk away and quickly choose YES and make another withdrawl before the machine's software automatically logs you off. I always wait and hit NO then wait until it logs out and I see the Chase advertisement on the screen before I walk away.
They never used the tap before so probably felt rushed with guy standing behind them. Also the bank would have had a clear picture of the scammer but didn't want to be bothered to help out. Probably one of the Chase employees.
Facts. And they know you can’t get more then a certain amount out of an atm in one day. So they make it an absurd amount that you have to take out in reality your unable to take out 5,000$+
It’s the customers fault for not knowing that you have to log out of the atm. Who just walks away after using it without confirming if you’re signed out? Smh
One transaction per transaction. Each should be a separate step. This sounds like a good class action against the bank. Imagine going to a filing station, filling up, then driving away and then the next guy gets free gas. That sort of thing would end overnight. And worse yet? The bank does not pursue it with the police as a theft and provide the picture of the guy
Exactly! Why do people also blame criminals? You placed yourself in a position where simple common sense is needed. That's why EVERY transaction at the Chase ATM requires you to enter the PIN, even during the SAME SESSION. and in addition, that's why I USE CASH most times. I rarely go to the ATM.
I saw this in my feed and it said ABC news Chicago but I recognized my neighborhood in the Mission in San Francisco. Glad I watched it. I just took money out of that ATM a couple of weeks ago. The slot worked for my card and I always finish the transaction by logging out. I don't use the tap feature. Good to know what's happening in the hood these days.
Probably had a mask on or since it’s under a thousand it is a non violent petty theft crime and better and more cost effective to just bring awareness to Customers.
Make sure you're doing this online too. It's no different. You're logged in automatically everywhere and law says a tap or click agreement of any kind is sufficient. Even scrolling the page indicates you've read it
The thief should be fined, NOT arrested...No one deserves to go to jail for that...That does not deserve jail...Jail is absolutely horrendous and i don't support it...i support complete rehabilitation, not punishing, and there are some people in this world that can do that, and if the people are really dangerous, then separating them from society, then rehabilitating...Stealing money is not like killing everyone in sight...It really bothers me that most people think like that, like putting people away is the answer...It is very cruel, devastating and barbaric, and i hope that consciousness changes in the future...If you did something like that in high school, do you think you would have deserved prison, and not know if you'll ever get out...?...That's truly scary that you think like that....
Chase should have anticipated this, and at least put a very fast "time out" feature. But when I use any automated money machine, like an ATM or gas pump, I make sure the system knows I'm done when I'm done. That's called being observant and paying attention to what you're doing. It's not just about you, it's about the system you're using.
security, whether it's a physical officer or cameras, should somehow notice fishy people hanging around the exterior ATMs. Or at the very least bank employees inside can keep an eye on things. This thing is all very fishy, but people should still be absolutely sure that their transaction is closed before walking away
There was apparently some analysis missing at the end of the transaction. OR, the problem was raised to the team that builds the app, and the person who raised the issue was told "oh, that will never happen. Stop being so dramatic." Then of course, it happens. Please don't ask me how I know about this dynamic.
This is why you can't trust random strangers coming up to you or tapping functions for cards unless you're inside the bank lobby using a machine there.
I am that kind of person that wait til the end, but sometimes we get distracted. It might happen to anyone, so, thank you for informing us about this. Hopefully they will catch these thieves soon.
This isn't even a "scam" At the end of your transaction it *LITERALLY* says "DO YOU WANT TO DO ANYTHING ELSE?" These people are just walking away without ending the transaction. @@chinbosschinboss2484 Actually this is a scam when the criminal purposely breaks the ATM card insert to force people to use the scan feature to access their account in hopes for an individual to forget to log out.
@@chinbosschinboss2484 For a non tap transaction the machine holds onto your card until you say you are done. Then gives you the card back before your cash/receipt. The slot was disabled because the tap feature does not have the same safety checks.
I rarely use them. I go inside and write a check. Can''t remember when I last used an ATM for cash. Or, get cash at establishments (grocery stores) where I shop often. Very weary of this. If I have to I wait until the session is over and have my receipt. Yes, I suppose you could blame Chase (which is my bank) but I'm still very careful.
I quit using ATMs years ago. As soon as I heard about skimmers being used by criminals, I realized criminals were smarter than the banks. Now I always go inside and deal with tellers and I'm not so sure about them either.
Would do this too then I had the bank call me to say they were putting $100 back into my account bc one of their employees was taking money from customers account without authorization. I didn’t realize money was missing until they refunded me
My brother used to be a teller, he would take some cash if you came in & wanted to deposit $600 for example. If that person handed him $650, he taking that $50. He was doing it for years until he landed a better paying job
Please check out of the ATM entirely before leaving! And always be mindful of people behind and around you! If you have to go to another ATM then please do so! Always be on guard! It’s your hard earned money!
who’s stupider, the person who designed the atm software or the people who walk away from an atm with a big button saying “do you want to withdraw more money?”
Exactly. The majority of the top comments blaming Chase but too lazy to blame the person who can't double check that their card is logged off. Chase is right lmao
That is a major software bug on Chase's part. The session should expire as soon as the first transaction ends and receipt confirmation starts. If another transaction is needed, then the person must authenticate again with their card. Bank of America has this process in place for their tap to authenticate.
It must be something specific to the tap function as well. As a Chase user no matter what it asks for your PIN # after completing a certain request before completing another one. For example, if I put my card in and want to check my balance, I have to enter my PIN and then hit account balances. The machine will let you go back to the main menu and see the options such as deposit or withdraw, but if you attempt to do any of those things it asks for your PIN again. It may vary from atm too but you usually only have about 10-15 seconds to do anything before it asks you if you need more time. Once it gives you that notification it will ask you for your pin again.

It wasn't the tap function, it is the fact that they didn't log out of their account. Never walk away, until you are officially logged off and no additional transactions can take place w/ your account.
The problem is with the card reader, when you get your card out, you are also logged out. The tap function doesn't log out by default after one transaction and that is the problem. These people didn't know it because they used the card reader and got used to that way. Also there seems to not be obvious in the user interface.
Exactly what Princess 👆🏽👆🏽 said. It’s absolutely the tap function that leaves the account open. But the thief still needs the pin regardless.. just don’t need the card anymore.
Just like the people who write their PINs on the back of their cards, or type out their card number and PIN in response to an email that says their card is locked and they have to provide the card number and the PIN in order to get it unlocked. Oh the stupidity that I encountered during my years working as a fraud banker.
1st things 1st, never allow anyone near you at an ATM, that should be a red flag in itself. 2nd, I can honestly say that until seeing this video wasn't aware of ending transactions required; for no good reason of my own (just not observant enough), I truly felt my transaction ended when monies were distributed, and I received my receipt. I'll be extremely careful in the future, thanks!
Indeed, always make sure transaction is ended/logged out no matter the ATM or Method. I even do the same at gas station. Its like assuming auto log out after viewing you online account at a public library computer.
Kind of ridiculous that the transaction ISN'T over after the exact scenario you described....after I click NO when it asks if I have anything further...you SHOULD be logged out.
100% Chase bank fault here every atm i use auto logs you out after you make a withdrawal they could sue chase bank for this. i thought the scammer would have taken the information when they were tapping when i first clicked the video but chase bank so bad they don't need to steal the card information they can just wait behind someone and keep withdrawing the money.
Be vigilant? They need to be vigilant to make sure their machines are safe to use. I've heard so many bad things about Chase. Would never bank with them. This is just another reason why.
Once your transactions are finished you need to log off. This is just basic common sense. You cant blame the bank for this. I always do this at the gas station. I wait until it asks me for the receipt and then click no and wait until the thank you screen shows up. lol
It's not the bank. It's the user and the thief. Log out and hide your pin. It asks for your pin for the second withdrawal. I've had chase for many many years 90% I use ATMs. No problems. Smart con thief's are the problem. You don't blame a gas stations gas when your car stops after running over a nail and gets a flat tire.
All you have to do is file a small claims lawsuit and sit back. About 10 days before the court date, Chase will contact you and inform you that they will pay you if you cancel the lawsuit. Then you tell them the full amount plus the $50 court filing fee and they tell you "no problem". They will never go to court because they know there is a 100% chance that they will lose, plus they have to pay thousands for lawyers as well. As far as that tap scam goes. Chase should require you to tap again if you wanted to make another withdrawal; that is the way it used to be handled when you slide the card in. It's not likely that someone would make 2 withdrawals sequentially. No matter what you do, always make sure you are logged out before walking away; whether it's an ATM or a website.
In most states at Small Claims Court you can sue for 3x damages (triple damages). So if you lost $100 you can sue for $300. Mentioning this to the bank might persuade them even faster.
These scammers make me sick. They steal money from people and get away with it each and every time. Then when the banks refund the victims money, the scammers get to keep the money they stole and just stroll on down to the next victim and never get caught
I bet you that if the banks have to end up paying the money back to the customer that's when they look at the surveillance footage so that they can try to find out who took the money so they can get it back for themselves
Pretty sure so far the banks stole the most from me… now they charging me 19.99 a month to have an account with them bc I was below their limit this month?
Chase Bank should be shut down because of this. Their behavior is disgraceful. For Chase to refuse to investigate, refuse to watch surveillance video--completely unacceptable, and I will NEVER BANK WITH CHASE!!!😠
I always hit the cancel and end button even after I've logged out. But I'm also really paranoid. Also I have it so only a certain amount can be taken out per day and I rarely go to an ATM! You definitely need to be vigilant and proactive!!
This is just me when going to an ATM: (1) If my transaction doesn't go through the first time, I press cancel multiple times and move on from that machine.(2) When people are too close to me at an ATM, I cancel my transaction an move on about my day because I do not want your help using the ATM . (3.) I try not to use an ATM most times. I like getting cash back when shopping in a store.
I’m always confused when ppl walk away with the screen still asking “Would you like to process another transaction?” Or whatever it says. Most often it asks for your card to be reinserted with the pin when you do insert your card initially but I literally don’t walk/drive away until the welcome screen comes on. Glad to learn this though.
Never EVER leave the atm without making sure YOUR screen has shut down. I’ve always seen that on my ATM in NC and have answered NO (no, there is nothing else I need to do). OMG! People need to slow down, take time, and make sure everything is done.
Meanwhile here I am over at the gas station pressing clear and cancel repeatedly even though the screen says "Welcome to Shell! -Cash -Credit -Debt" just to be sure it actually finished the transaction 😂
@@VAFranky well, st**id, that, believe or not, is the NEW screen for the next person. So, with that, sug, you can walk away because it’s asking the next person how THEY want to pay. SMH. 🙄
Something like this happened some years back, and I remember customers had to be reminded to log off the ATM after they were done. My bank changed the ATMs to completely eat your card while the account is being accessed, and not give the card back until after logging out. While tapping is a nice added alternative, it introduces this vulnerability, not sure what could be done to fix it outside the customers making sure they log out.
They're doing it on purpose bc Chase is owned mainly by its stockholders Blackrock and Vanguard, who have intentions of switching everything over to one world crypto and in turn can monitor and control your every move
@@milesblue638 This. Chase is stupid AF. Im not in the US but thats how it works here. You allow them to do one thing and then re authenticate tap again to do something else. I mean it's not very hard to hold a card up to a reader again if you need to do multiple things. Otherwise if it's inconvenient for you then just do whatever on your own device. As it's a public ATM and generally only meant to dispense cash, check balances, or receive deposits.
Why would people walk away from the ATM before logging out? Also, whenever I’ve tried running a second transaction from an ATM, it always asks me to re-enter my pin. I’m assuming that by using the chip, it disables needing to enter the pin#?
I always make sure my account is logged out before walking away. I never use the 'tap' feature because I don't know enough about its safety & this report is giving me enough reason to continue not to use it.

And what are people supposed to do during the hours the bank is closed and there's no tellers? It must be nice having nothing else to do during the day but go to the bank and get money.
One thing to remember when using an ATM is to walk away from it only when you know the transaction is done and you are logged out of it. Follow all prompts with it until it complete.
One thing is to not be lazy, and WALK INTO THE BANK. I used ATM's when they came out in the 80's for the novelty...Never had a problem and I'm in the philly area... Get enough money out to go a week without going to the bank. Be patient and go in.

Leaving the ATM open is pure negligence in the design of those systems. The bank is responsible. In fact this is a big opportunity for a class action against banks that let this happen and don't make right by customers.
So the lawyers will get $12 million... and the customers will get $5 dollars and 75 cents. What's needed isn't a class action suit but thousands of successful small claim court claims with required full reimbursement. Or for this tv station to offer to publicize *anyone* who lost money this way.

Hope the scammers are caught. It's a worse shame that Chase denied to deal with the initial & prompt complaints. Looks like the bank was just as willing to take part in the scam by being so reluctant to take corrective action.
how does it make them scammers? for telling them to use a normal function of the machine? its the idiots that left their accout open to the public its their fault. maybe they will learn how to use an atm in the future. the bank was 100% correct not refunding the cash they gave away.
One of the banks I used switched to that at the ATM and properly changed back to the previous software, but honestly, I won't leave until I see the screen cleared back to the start screen
And this is why I've never had an account at Chase and I never will. Oh, sure, there are probably other banks that have this security flaw in their software, but Chase is always running full speed ahead to be last for customer service. The manager said it all: "It's our policy to not help you."

@@redzoom7857 True, but leave it to Chase to (a) not have the software that requires reinsertion of the card, (b) doesn't log you out fast enough, (c) disclaims any responsibility to even look at security footage to try to identify the culprit, and (d) refuses to offset any financial loss. I went inside talked to the teller and she said you only had so long to take the money or the transaction is over. From then on I always grab the money ASAP.
ATM machines should log out immediately after each transaction (regardless of swiping or tabbing) - for additional transaction, they should request the user to tab the card and enter the pin again for security reasons. This “manual logout” risk is not limited to one bank, but all. When I first used the tab card, I also found the manual logout requirement annoying and dangerous - especially when people are in a hurry or when there are other people waiting around the ATM. Huge red flag.

There are gas pumps where you have to make sure the transaction is closed. At truck stops or where there is a lot of commercial type traffic the gas pumps are set up to allow multiple vehicles to be filled up on the same credit card purchase. You have to make sure after you put back the nozzle in to the holder, you tap on End or Finish, or whatever is prompted. It happened to a family member where she did not terminate the transaction at a commercial type gas pump. She saw a bill from her card for a huge amount of gasoline. It seems that there's NO "flashing light" to remind you to "sign out" of the ATM if you use this so-called "tap" function. From a human factors point of view, it's better to ask the customer to "re-tap" their card, and also to "re-enter their PIN," for EACH and EVERY transaction.
Chris Evans so you think you can find the best people can cool with the morning now that day is the first time we go back and see my weekend and next week we will be now that you
None of the chase ATMs I use have tap functionality, or they don't make it evident that they do. When you put your card in the machine it requires you enter your pin for all transactions.
Credit Unions are far superior to banks in every way. I'm not talking about the machines, but if people really knew how banks operated, and how little they actually care about their average customer, they'd invest in a local credit union in a moment. Big Banks are pure evil and they have a good hand in destroying our economies.

But how is this the banks fault? It’s common sense make sure you log out before walking away. At the end of the day it’s your personal information and account you are leaving open if you run off as soon as you withdraw cash.
@@ClubAmerica92 How about change the program and require to re-tap the card to make a second transaction then? When you get your card out of the reader you automatically log out, the moment you tap your card once you do one transaction, why would it stay open for more in a tap mode?
I bank with Chase and have as of now had no problems, But this story is a very very good eye opener. I’m glad these people got their money back. If this happened to me and I was not reimbursed my hard earned money back I would definitely close my account and move my business somewhere else specially if the back knows this is happening at their branch…
The NFC tap function is very convenient, I use it all the time. I also read what's on the screen and don't just assume everything is ok just like I don't keep valuables in my car with the doors unlocked. Personal responsibility goes a long way.
Criminals are getting more and more intelligent as far as their crimes are concerned. I've personally never used the tap option, and before I put the card into the slot, I do a quick check to make sure there's nothing unusual in or near the slot. Given that these ATM machines (whether they're the drive-thru or lobby ATMs) aren't exactly monitored 24/7, there's no telling who could be doing what to them.
Criminals get creative. These individuals knew how the TAP option worked. Nothing sophisticated than pure social engineering and manipulating their playing field ie.e jamming the card slot so victims used the TAP option. Most people don't look back at the screen after a transaction is done in an ATM because they assume it ends their session.
They have to keep evolving to keep up with all the new security measures and cyber security. As long as there’s poverty or someone has wants and needs, there will always be crime
Ooh, I didn't even know that we could use that "tap" function. I've always inserted my ATM card. And I've always made sure to log out afterward. I'll try that "tap" method later and log out when I'm done. 😊
You have to absolutely wait for the ATM machine at Chase to say thank you for business, just like if your card was in the machine and you would have to wait to remove it after your transaction. I even wait a little extra to watch the ATM go back to its regular Home Screen.
This isn't even a "scam" At the end of your transaction it *LITERALLY* says "DO YOU WANT TO DO ANYTHING ELSE?" These people are just walking away without ending the transaction. All you have to do to avoid this "scam" is be patient, and read...
how do people not know you have to end the transaction? ive known that since i was 18 . regardless of tap or inserting card i always wait until i see the initial home screen pop up on the screen again before i walk away
Im too paranoid about something like this happening to me, so whenever I use Chase atms or any ATM anywhere I always make sure that I'm completely logged off and I can see the bank's homescreen before leaving. I always opt to have my receipt emailed to me and if I use another bank's ATM I always make sure I grab the receipt just in case.
You can set a text alert on your account whenever there is an ATM withdrawal over an amount of your choosing, so choose a low amount. Better to get an alert when you use it rather than none at all. 👍
If anyone around you while at the atm notices any issue with you and your transactions BEWARE. No.1 they are too close and attentive to your business and No.2 don’t trust a random person with your financial business. I only walk away from an atm when it’s clear and ready for another person to use it takes a few more seconds but it saves all this mess.
This is another fine example of the failures in common sense of the Pocket Protector crowd. If you place your card INSIDE the machine, then you cannot receive your cash until you remove your card. The machine does not have a programmed step similar to that wherein the program must KNOW you are complete before dispensing the cash, and thus once the cash door sends the money, and collection occurs, the program is ONLY going to end. This deficiency is a programmers' fault. It is common logic, but not to taped glasses types.
As a fraud Investigator for a bank, a couple of things. Always make sure your logged out of an atm before leaving, it's amazing that people will make sure of something like this at a gas pump but not the atm, and if someone happens to approach you with "advice" off the street when it comes to money at all, be very wary. Personally if someone told me that I would have walked off and used another atm cause it's odd that an atm would have an issue like that to begin with and then someone is conveniently there with some advice. And finally if that has happened to you and the bank refuses to pay I highly recommend going after the bank Ina legal capacity. Atm fraud falls under regulation E in the US and to get to the point of that whole thing the bank has a legal requirement to compensate you for the loss. It sounds as though chase was testing the waters by saying that by the customer entering the info themselves it gave the fraudster implied consent but I HIGHLY doubt that it would stand up in court. Most likely if you call the banks bluff they'll probably cave before it even gets to court it's cheaper to just pay out. Shameful that chase would even try though 😕
From Chase: Chase offers what is called Rapid Reimbursement. This means that if there is fraud on your account they will reimburse you while the fraud is being investigated. The zero liability protection on your JPMorgan Chase account protects you against fraud whether it was through your checking account, savings account, debit card, or Chase credit card.
Although the people in this story were reimbursed, just think of how many weren't. The system was probably designed by a dewy-eyed 'UX Designer' fresh out of art school.
I've walked up to ATM's to use it and have seen the message displayed on the screen 'Would You Like Another Transaction?' - I''m always horrified that someone walks away without making sure the transaction is complete. The message 'Would you like another transaction' should appear with a YES/NO prompt _before_ cash is dispensed, so the session will close immediately afterwards and the customer can answer that question while still in progress.
I remember the ATM machines in 7-11's just required you swipe your card through the reader. People constantly walked away from the machine while it was asking if they wanted another transaction.
What happened to the function that has the bank send you a text checking if your account is being used fraudulently??? My bank denied a $10 transaction because I had been shopping somewhere else and they didn’t think it was me. I didn’t notice the text right away, so my card was closed!!! Banks do not care about their customers. I had other problems with Chase bank and I am glad I don’t have them anymore!!!
Yep in cybersecurity this technique is called tailgating or piggybacking and obviously logging out when done is very important. Wouldn't be surprised if they start implementing multifactor authentication for every time we go to withdraw money or at least with the tap feature.
Why not just disallow multiple transactions? Most people only do one transaction at the ATM. If they need to do something else, retap or reinsert the card and enter the PIN again.
It shouldn't have taken that much work to get Chase Bank to do its job. They knew full well the additional withdrawals were fraudulent. They had a responsibility to work with police on the case and to make their customers whole.
Chase should have immediately helped their customers out on this so that they didn't have to jump through constant hoops until Chase was forced to credit their money back. They could see from cameras that it wasn't the same person making the withdrawals. Chase did not have their customer's back on this! Never use outdoor ATM's, always go to the ones inside. Better yet, do it old school and just go into the bank and get your money. ATM's are a security hazard.
@@BlowitAllUp, we didn't get the full story. Often when someone is trying to commit fraud like this, they will find a way to distract the person. But yeah, you gotta be vigilant and not let anyone distract you when access to your bank account is at stake.
That is a programing issue that can be taken care of from the ATM computer system programing. It seems that Chase would want that issue corrected so they don't get a class action claim against them. If I were a customer I'd be taking with an attorney and finding a solution for it.
I use Chase and even if you tell the ATM that you would like to do another transaction and do another withdrawal, it always asks me to re-enter my pin number to prevent things like this. That being said, the company's refusal to help these customers makes me want to stop using Chase.
I've never used this feature. But I don't leave the screen for the next customer until I know I'm logged out. My credit union makes you enter your pin for each transaction even if it is just a balance inquiry and then you want cash or a transfer.
These criminals are getting out of control. Watch the machine you are using. Always go inside and ask an employee or manager of that bank. Never tap your card at ATM's, and always complete your transaction before leaving.😳
There was nothing wrong with tapping their card!? Did you not watch the video? It was only because they did not hit logout of their account on the ATM. Stop spreading false information!
The tapping isn’t the problem. It’s the ATM and CHASE. Being diligent about self protection and self awareness is the way to avoid being scammed in such a situation. Chase isn’t wrong about the fact that the customer should be paying attention to what they are doing. Chase was WRONG by not protecting the customers that depend on their services.
A fool and his money are soon parted. A fool is a person who is careless and unknowledgeable, with no intention of improving themselves. As a result, they live in a pattern of behavior, and they don’t understand how to look after money; that’s why they are always conned.
They could update the software to automatically logout after the first withdraw is complete or ask for the pin again for the second withdrawal. It's not rocket science.
I dont use ATMs. I always get cashback at stores or go into the bank for larger amounts. They should also make a better graphic on the screen to tell you to log out.
same here, never use them, they are a risk. It doesn't take that long to get money directly from a teller in the bank or from drive thru teller. People have gotten so used to just rushing around and rushing up to these ATM's at midnite or whenever as if they are safe, when they're not. And definitely wouldn't EVER use an outside ATM which could be tampered with easier, as this one was with the glue. Banks are putting their customers at risk!
Honestly Chase should have refunded them with no issues, but it's totally their fault for being so absent-minded to not fully logout of their account at the ATM, like how long have these people been alive LOL
Major design flaw on chase's atm and a terrible way of chase to handle fraud. I'm so glad I keep declining their invitation to apply for their junk bank.
I found it ridiculous that Chase would not go through their surveillance cameras and charge these criminals with fraud and theft!!
The crooks know about the $500 limit. That's why they make multiple withdrawals of $400 each.

Lol.
That's dumb. The pin is guessable or peekable. The chip or phone is a physical device. It would be far more logical, security-wise, to ask the person to tap again to continue. You’re distracted when handling your own cash? You deserve to get jacked.
That’s common. Almost everyone leaned the atm like that while it’s still asking.
I genuinely feel for these victims but why would you walk away from the ATM without confirming that all transactions are finished?
...true, and chase should look at the surveillance...bet they would if someone spray painted Chase SUCKS on their window....

It's common sense with any atm, these guys did it to themselves. There wasn't alot either if only 3people got got lmao
I quit using ATMs years ago. As soon as I heard about skimmers being used by criminals, I realized criminals were smarter than the banks. Now I always go inside and deal with tellers and I'm not so sure about them either.

They're just cute bobble heads.

Exactly. The majority of the top comments blaming Chase but too lazy to blame the person who can't double check that their card is logged off. Chase is right lmao
One year later and I still haven't got scammed cause I always wait for thanks, come again screen.
Stupider is not a word . It’s “who is more stupid “. Sorry , I just don’t want you to sound stupid .
Once it gives you that notification it will ask you for your pin again.
or you can, you know.. pay attention to your transaction?

It wasn't the tap function, it is the fact that they didn't log out of their account. Never walk away, until you are officially logged off and no additional transactions can take place w/ your account.
The problem is with the card reader, when you get your card out, you are also logged out. The tap function doesn't log out by default after one transaction and that is the problem. These people didn't know it because they used the card reader and got used to that way. Also there seems to not be obvious in the user interface.

Common sense isn't so common nowadays.....even when I use my card at a gas station I always make sure I'm logged out
Just like the people who write their PINs on the back of their cards, or type out their card number and PIN in response to an email that says their card is locked and they have to provide the card number and the PIN in order to get it unlocked.

My dad always taught me to click the End button multiple times after ending my transaction lull. I guess he knew this was an extra safety precaution
How could you not know to end your transactions??🙄
Good job on these reports good journalism ❤
Be vigilant? They need to be vigilant to make sure their machines are safe to use. I've heard so many bad things about Chase. Would never bank with them. This is just another reason why.
Once your transactions are finished you need to log off. This is just basic common sense. You cant blame the bank for this. I always do this at the gas station. I wait until it asks me for the receipt and then click no and wait until the thank you screen shows up. lol

Chase don't want to admit it is a flaw on the way the software is programmed on the ATM because that'd be millions more loss
People needed to put their guards up. Where I'm from in my country, they stopped offering tap and pay on the bank I'm with.
Pretty sure so far the banks stole the most from me… now they charging me 19.99 a month to have an account with them bc I was below their limit this month?
Chase is a bad neighbor

To Christopher: Classic comment chiseled in clay.
"vigilant and proactive" kinda sop these days, right? hard to have much sympathy for those that are just stumbling along and not paying attention.
You have too much common sense compared to those who got ripped-off.
I’m always confused when ppl walk away with the screen still asking “Would you like to process another transaction?” Or whatever it says.
Chase could log out at the end of every transaction or require a pin at the start of every transaction.
That's intelligent programming for ya... Now a days especially. Be aware this can happen online too! Just browsing the internet, it's upon us , nobs

I've never noticed a "tap" function at the Credit Union ATM I usually use. It seems that there's NO "flashing light" to remind you to "sign out" of the ATM if you use this so-called "tap" function.
And why wouldnt the ATM ask for a pin to continue another transaction, seems absurd.

Depends on the amount, attorney fees might negate the effort.
Inside job, protecting their cut of the scam.
Customers were too dumb to complete the transaction.
Okay and?? The CUSTOMER should have logged out, it's not the banks fault!! 🤡🙄
No, it’s the customers fault for not ending their session.
IT IS CHASE. FOREVER IT GIVES YOU THAT OPTION. PEOPLE NEED TO READ THE SCREEN AND NO IT DOESNT HAVE TO DO WITH THE TAP OPTION.
I tap all of the time. I just make sure to end my session because I'm not an idiot.
@@ineedhoez we get it.ur the smartest dude in shitville
The tapping isn’t the problem. It’s the ATM and CHASE.
Being diligent about self protection and self awareness is the way to avoid being scammed in such a situation.
Chase isn’t wrong about the fact that the customer should be paying attention to what they are doing. Chase was WRONG by not protecting the customers that depend on their services.
Who doesn’t know that the account stays open after a transaction? Chase not the only one… you literally have to close it yourself 😅
I don't use any ATM machines either. I normally use Cash even at grocery stores too.
