  • I've recently acquired a hunting camper, that was built off a pop-up camper frame, and I converted it to a drop axle fish house/camper. Watch all the way through if you want to know how to do this. Enjoy!

    Chris....if you could make a drop axle trailer, that could haul a side x side, and fit inside a residential 3rd car garage........buddy.......I could sell all you could make! No one sells (that i know of) a trailer that will fit inside a 7' tall 8' wide garage, WITH a sxs on the trailer. With roll cage most sxs are 6' tall or better. Add trailer height.....you're done. Using your crank technology to lower the trailer when you get home, put that in the garage and that's a winner. I have a few dozen deer hunting buddies that would upgrade from ATV to sxs but cannot due to the garage/trailer limitations.

    Very awesome video! By far this has been one of the best custom Icehouse videos I've seen so far. I really appreciated the detail in each of the videos in this series and really like that design for the custom drop. Its pretty simple and looks easy enough to take care of. I'm located in Michigan and usually use a pop up but got my first look at icehouses out on Devils Lake North Dakota and have wanted to build my own since. Looking forward to seeing more videos from your channel! I'm a small channel as well that has a bit of everything and I like making people laugh. Cheers brother

    Great build. I stopped using those wire wheels when flapper discs came out, they have no wires to fly out at you, so don't end up all over the garage waiting to get under your finger nail when you don't expect it 😭

    Man that setup is clean!! I have a crank down setup on my little house that definitely needs some leaf springs. No suspension right now and it makes me nervous pulling it down anything that’s not perfect pavement. Lots of bouncing and pressure on the welds. I like that system you came up with there on your axle... similar to Ice Castle but not exactly the same. I might have to do something similar! Awesome video!!

    • @ThingsChrisDoes
      @ThingsChrisDoes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks a ton man. 🙌🏻 It wasn’t too hard to build either, you could probably copy this system for the most part and add some leafs on your set up. I spent like $60 bucks in steel and that was about it. Good luck fishing this year. 👍🏻👍🏻

    This Video inspired me to start my own, I'm starting with an old 14' bumper pull trailer. I have it down to the frame an am tying to figure out the drop axle. What size bar stock and pipe did you use?

    • @ThingsChrisDoes
      @ThingsChrisDoes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hell yeah!!! I’m pumped that I was able to motivate you into doing a build. My barstock was 1-3/4” bar stock (for a 17’ I would just go with a 2” bar stock), and the pipe was a 1/8” bigger because I shoved a piece of Galvanized pipe between them as a bushing to soak up the grease and create a longer lasting pivot point. If you watch towards the end of the video I explained how I did that part! Best of luck to you, and have a blast! 🤘🏻🤘🏻

    Nice work. How did you determine where the stationary leaf spring mounts and the tube that the leaf spring slides through go? Im looking to build something similar and wondered how critical this is.

    • @ThingsChrisDoes
      @ThingsChrisDoes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! 🙌🏻 As far as the mounting point, I just sort of set it on the bar so that the center of the leaf spring (top of the arc) was within 3ish inches from the spindle shaft. Then I gave it that little 2” lift so that it would mimic the force of an axle pushing up on it in the middle. The tubing is 2x2x11ga steel, so the inside is around 1.5 - 1.75” and the leaf spring slid right through. Hope that helps!

    I kinda have the same set up on my fish house but mine doesn't have leaf springs just has pivot arms wonder if you had any idea how I could add winches to raise and lower it cuz it hard to do by hand cuz its heavy

    • @ThingsChrisDoes
      @ThingsChrisDoes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on man! You could copy my design here and weld up a tube for the winch to slide into, or you could do the permanent style winch, that goes down to a pulley, and then up to your drop arm. Either way you would just get it cranked down far enough to put the pin back in like you would when you're raising it by hand. The hook loops i got are rated for 2200 lbs each, and the pivot shaft takes some of that static pressure off the hook loop anyway, so anything in that ball park would be fine. Hope that helps, good luck!

    Do you have a design slip of all the measurements I could get

  • @OldSloGuy
    @OldSloGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A free floating bushing is an old trick. A lot of older car engines had free floating wrist pins between the piston and the con rod. Because they were free to rotate, they did and distributed the wear. Not so much any more because of better lube. Free floating creates circular wear more or less evenly around the bushing. A fixed bushing will create a matchng surface under load that has a bigger contact area but more back and forth slop. Like most engineering, competing advantages require informed decisions. The solution depends on the expectations in service. Here, service is predictable.

      I haven’t put one together yet no, but I plan to make a separate video going over all of it. I’ve had a lot of people ask for the size/specs of steel and shit, so I figured I’d make a video just on that. What part are you looking for though?

      Mainly the spindle and support pieces

      Oh okay, the spindle I got is a 3500# spindle kit off eBay I’ll see if I can find the link. Then the main drop arm (with the spindle and pivot shaft in it) was 2x3x3/16”, and the top bar that stuck out past the tire for the winch to hook on, that was 2x2x11ga. Then I used the leftover scraps from the 2x2 to make the other hook mount for the winch. Hope this helps. 👍🏻

      @@ThingsChrisDoes I also have the one winch but it’s a big steering wheel so if the winch brakes it won’t spin really fast and bust my hand. I also have a safety chain set up for if the leaf spring brakes.

      Thanks man! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 The one winch is all you need in my opinion. I just subscribed to your channel too, always nice to see some good new fishing spots.

      @@ThingsChrisDoes I was 2 days away from buying something like what you had started with, then the seller cancelled. Someone offered more money so I can't fault them for taking a better deal. So I'm still looking for one. Saw you were in MN and I was like HEY ME TO! and this dude does a bunch of the same stuff that I like doing! So, the home state connection and shared interests got me to sub. Deer hunting is coming up so even if I found something today I probably wouldn't get to working on it until December. @@ThingsChrisDoes we have 35 acres in sandstone with open stands everywhere but we need to build some enclosed elevated stands that we can put a little heater in and keep dad out of the elements. At almost 70 it's difficult for him to get into his stand. Gotta keep the old man comfortable. But, also gotta get decent enough weather to build and also cut some trails to get the wheelers through.

    Anyone else cringe when he was welding against the shed’s siding?

    • @ThingsChrisDoes
      @ThingsChrisDoes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I even did man 🤣 I didn’t film it, but it crossed my mind as I started, so I dropped the welder and looked up quick to make sure it didn’t fuck up the paint. It’s all steel siding so it held up, but it sure scared me for a second.
