I think they have every right to do so because they (UMG) have the rights to the songs. Their artists also on the other hand signed a legally binding agreement and contract with them.
UMG only holds the rights to the artist’s catalogue if they signed their Masters away to the label ( not every artists does that approach) sure the artist also holds the rights and if they have 100% ownership it’s also up to them if they want their music on Tik Tok
Actually, TikTok pays record labels and artists based on individual video creations. If a song gets used on a video that gets 100.000 views, it counts as one ”stream” regardless of the view count. If a song gets used on 10.000 videos that get 0 views in total, it would still count as 10.000 ”streams” for the song. However, getting a song used on thousands of videos is very hard to accomplish.
This could be a massive win for indie artists.
