Hi Chris, fantastic video from another ex RAF serviceman too ! I wasn't a pilot though, based at RAF Brize Norton and a member of Tac Comms Wing ( TCW UKMF ) back in the 80s. Enough about me, I tried this in VR with the Grumman Intruder , taking off from an aircraft carrier in the South China sea, it took me 45 mins to eventually get the refuelling probe to attach to the basket and then I started swaying around in my excitement and the probe disconnected !! Still, it was fun and I'll try numerous more times as this is sooo good. Appreciate your tips n tricks and huge thanks also for being one of our fantastic fast jet pilots, awesome stuff ! Cheers Daz, Leicester.

I have yet to try this in MSFS though. I might break out the old Tomkitty and give this a go. THANKS for the video!!
Me too. I was lucky enough to be invited to join a VC10 crew on a sortie from Bahrain up North to the no-fly zone in the mid-90s. Got some great photos of three Tornados refuelling, and it was nice to be in the jump seat for the take-off and landing. And, speaking of landings, it was interesting to fly a circuit in a big aircraft instead of the long sedate approaches you're used to in an airliner.
@@cgaviator great stuff...I remember at Brize Norton when I was stationed there a memo went around all the squadrons asking for volunteers to fly up to Scotland and back on the Tristar to test the new on-board catering ! It was a tough job but someone had to do it !
Hi Chris. Amazing & informative video as usual. Ex RAF myself albeit just a lowly engineer. Seved with 617 sqn for 14 years and did a tour on Hawks at valley. Love flying the Hawk and follow your guidance & tips religiously. Getting to grips with Tonka but finding it a struggle lol. Will keep persevering. Good to see you back, keep up the good work.
Very nice. In DCS the jet wash is brutal if you get close to the engines while refuelling. FYI: The clear air even a few thousand feet up is because the bulk of the atmospheric Mie scattering (particulates, like water vapour which is exponential; with a scale height of around 2km) is below you, and a fair bit of the Rayleigh scattering (molecular, from atmospheric gasses with a scale height of about 8km IIRC, and is why the sky appears blue) is also below you. Hence you see unscattered sunlight and its a bit stark. I've programmed the light scattering on the GPU using shaders when playing with coding a flightsim for myself.
I have been having great fun with this but its pretty tricky, can't imagine how amazing it must feel to do it for real for the first time, the first time I managed to top off my tanks in sim was amazing
I spent weeks trying to learn air to air refueling in DCS. I know it's just a sim and definitely not perfect, and I have 0 skill or training in something like that, but it still put it into perspective how skilled one must be to be able to do air to air refueling while actually piloting a real aircraft for hours on end.
Thanks for the video Chris! Some really useful tips that I will definitely be using as I attempt to master this dark art. I've noticed with airshow assistant that the tankers speed can sometimes be inconsistent/jittery so can find myself on full reheat trying to catch up 😂 hoping they iron this out as its a fantastic add on to the sim.
Hey, at 6:30 you mention you would talk to ATC. We don't do this IRL since MARSA is applied here and the tanker is the only one controlled. The tanker will reach back out to ATC and relay your clearance at this point. You will pick up IFR after departing the tanker.
@@cgaviator last question - Airshow assistant worth a purchase or do you prefer flying with real wingmen? Just purchased RAF Lakenheath with dedicated F-35 hangers!
