    What an aircraft to return with. I’ve had the pleasure of waggling XL426’s flight surfaces. All that’s missing from the sim version is the smell.

    I guess some Vulcan stories for you..... Apparently my friend (Vulcan Captain) when flying past Fighter bases woulld always ask if their were any "Playmates" who wanted to come and play intercepts etc. He was always disappointed that the RAF had become so rule obsessed that they seldom did. Royal Navy at Yeovilton was a different story, they would divert out of the circuit to have a go! Now back in early sixties I guess Hunter was usual "Playmate." Now the Vulcan with it's massive wing would see them off simply by 2g turn at high altitude, and delight in watching the Hunters fall out of the sky. He delighted in calling "Opposite rudder" when they were on the way down. Towards the end of the Vulcan's service he was over Greenland when the AEO told him that his stuff was lit up like a Christmas Tree. John looked out of the window to find an F14. Thinking that the old trick would work ... 2G turn, and the F14 lit the burners and TURNED INSIDE HIM. Much chagrined but realised at that point that the Vulcan's days were definitely numbered. There were other stories... one of his party pieces was to barrel roll the machine on a practice bombing run - flown properly as a 1g manouevre the guys in the back didn't know what was happening - just some red line would rotate around a screen - the Navs found it disconcerting. The man taught me to fly Jet Provosts in 1966. Time flies......

      Incredible stories, thank you so much for sharing! There was an authorisation for 'embelishment' during my days which meant that the air defence lot could play with you if they found you! No turning and burning sadly.

    • @markzzzz741
      @markzzzz741 ปีที่แล้ว

      More stories from 'senior' crews the better. The old days had plenty of threat and seemingly plenty of scope for for trying new tactics often. Thanks for returning Chris and a great video. The Tin Triangle is as complex as could be expected for a multi crew '50's bomber. One for the shopping list, but I expect lots of study!

    I started my career on the Viscount 800. The Smiths flight system, with the movable heading pointer and static course bar, was almost identical. The HSI was called a beam compass. It was always fun to fly with a new captain joining the fleet from longhaul where they’d have flown a more modern HSI/flight director. Flying a procedural ILS with a procedure turn required very agile spatial awareness.

    • @catherineburton195
      @catherineburton195 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Level off was a 5 second burst of nose down then pull the alt hold with 50’ to go. It would then hold the required altitude.

    • @cgaviator

    • @cgaviator
      @cgaviator  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did a PFL video in the PC21, should read across quite well. The TB30 is good but make sure you upgrade to turboprop. That said, just strap into the F14 and have at it! 😅

    • @tomboH82
      @tomboH82 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah watched that vid on the pilatus, DLd the TB30 op manual but PFL diagram confused me(non pilot). On to the Tucano or Pilatus maybe, but intimidated by the all digital cockpits so maybe the Tuc!! Keep up the great work!

    • @cgaviator
      @cgaviator  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomboH82 the MSFS Tucano isn’t the UK version. It’s an ok effort but short of the very high standards in this sim. Best thing to do when learning is take one thing at a time. Either learn the start up, or just have the engines already running and learn the tacan, engine instruments, or whatever takes your fancy.

    • @tomboH82

    I left Warton in 1999 after 21 years.
    It was a treat to wander outside to see what was occurring. Anything from Canberras, Lightning, Jaguar, Hawk, Tornado or Typhoon might whistle in low. Your Vulcan would have been good to see too.
    I'd recommend Dave Eagle's 'Testing Tornado' if you'd like an insight into test flying in that period. On his retirement flight in Tornado he made a rather loud bang and blew out the windows on the local greenhouses.

    That was great Chris! Single handedly flying a Vulcan! I had a go on the virtual aerospace sim near Stockport and as you say, it's really not designed for seeing out of at low level, you really have to crane your neck to see anything outside but for the size of it, it's remarkably agile. I'm sure the villagers of Lancaster will forgive your slight by having a Vulcan fly over them at 200ft!

      That reminds me of when I was stuck in a boring office job in Swinton near Manchester. A cloudy day and all of a sudden a fighter jet appeared from nowhere. We were all stood at the window watching this beautiful thing fly around, trapped it seemed under the low level clouds but then a tiny glimpse of blue sky appeared and this thing just saw it, headed towards it, stood on its tail and disappeared. You can imagine how us poor sods felt at the sight of pure freedom!

Why does the lateral flight director tells you to bank right when the CDI indicator is telling you the ILS is to the left of you (ie 32:10). Also, for the vertical guidance, where is the glide slope indicator? Is the yellow bar the flight director, or is it the glide slope?

    • @Streaky100001

      Also trim, that's the other big one. She takes so much trim work to keep her happy, and if you're out of trim she gets really unstable. I've never found a gauge to tell me my trim position (I'm sure there is one and I'm just blind) which isn't great for setting takeoff trim

    When using Altitude hold with the autopilot is it possible to have it use data from the RADALT data rather than barometric altimeter data? 🤔 This would be for low level flights over water (a la Buccaneer) 😉 and perhaps something done occasionally during MRR missions IRL??? 🤔

    • @cgaviator
      @cgaviator  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn’t see it in the manual so I would say not. But getting an accurate baro pressure and matching it against the radalt would do the same thing. Did something similar in. The Tornado on a coastal range, changing the altimeter setting to altitude and height matched. Hope that helps.

    If it's not too long to go into, could you explain something about the decent rate from 30 miles at 15,000 ft. What I didn't quite understand is the 5° decent angle. Is this just the standard decent angle you would use so you know to start decending from that altitude from 30 miles. Or did the altitude and distance you were at dictate the angle needed? Or am I getting this completely wrong aha. Apologies if this seems really obvious and I'm being dense. I am pretty new to flight simulators.
    Absolutely love your channel by the way, I really admire you're knowledge and experience. I always love seeing Hawks at airshows and find it awesome you have flown and instructed in them!

    • @cgaviator
      @cgaviator  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you can either adjust descent angle to match the distance you have available to descend. Or pick your preferred descent angle to maximise time spent in cruise (fuel saving). Or you can descend based on time taken. The 5° is a sensible way to go as the range required is twice the altitude. You could go for 7° but then you need to started multiplying by 1.6! Any steeper and you need Airbrake to control speed which isn’t fuel efficient. Aircraft dependent of course. Hope that helps? And I haven’t actually instructed in Hawks, but I have instructed in Tucanos and T38Cs!

Did you mention that you also flew in Tornadoes too? One thing that really got me obsessed with fast jets was watching the Tornado display team do their attack demonstration. We we're at cosford for my first airshow and it had been absolutely miserable weather all day which caused most of the flights to be cancelled, including XH558. I was really disappointed until two Tornadoes came in so fast it frightened the life out of me! Seeing their demonstration really made me empathise/understand how scary and helpless a ground target would feel seeing those two intimidating jets absolutely rip up the sky.
