  • Take a tour of the Mach Loop with a real Hawk pilot! I have dozens of laps of the real Mach Loop under my belt. Join me for a full flight (sequences shortened) from Startup, Medium Level cruise, Low Level navigation and a return to RAF Valley. I'll demonstrate basic techniques (adapted for the sim) and I deal with tricky weather!

    I live in Machynlleth and grew up just assuming that every small town had military aircraft flying overhead very often as a result, it’s only recently I’ve started to appreciate being able to see such majestic planes here. A pair of F-35s flying over today made my day.

    Well after watching that (along with your other videos) and constantly failing whilst trying to emulate that route, it indeed does confirm that I was no loss to the Air Force as a Pilot and was much better suited to a career in Stores 😁 I did quite a few back seat flights whilst at Valley many many years ago (when the sky seemed full of T1's ) but I wouldn't even begin to assume that the Flight model is accurate but is certainly looks the part. However, living in that area, I can say that the mapping most certainly is, and I can accurately point out and recognize virtually all the areas and features whilst I fly around certainly above a height above 250' height (lowish spec graphics card) below 250' is usually when I suffer an unplanned landing. Brilliant and informative videos, please Keep them coming.👍👍

    Thank you for a great video. I have now subscribed. My first tour was RAF Valley back in 1975. I flew in what was LFA10 in a Gnat on several weather checks. Brawdy would do LFA 7, although I was fortunate to fly the Mach Loop in the rear seat of a Gnat before leaving Valley. I remember being surprised at looking up and seeing people above us on the side of a hill. I went on to complete 38 years retiring as a Sqn Ldr, I loved the service and more importantly the people, like all air traffic controllers I was always a wannabe fast jet pilot but realised I didn’t have the capacity and would have probably killed myself trying! The beauty of MSFS is we get to try without the expense and the risk. Great video, I look forward to learning from your videos.

    The lighting in Microsobo's WorldSimulation is designed with HDR in mind, meaning the differences between dark and bright are pretty wide, even if HDR isn't active. The mountain you mentioned that appeared to be black is only a harsh shadow, which considering the contrast between bright sunshine and the steep hill and the sun angle these days should be pretty realistic. If it appears black you have to adjust the brightness/contrast of your monitor if you don't see any details as it isn't simulated as dark. Therefore some newer games ask you for a simple form of screen calibration to get the brightness/contrast to levels that are appropriate to display the game correctly. Just adjust Brightness/contrast/gamma and if your panel isn't the cheapest TN version ... the dark mountains of MachLoop will be gone. 😉💙 Thanks for your service!

    • @cgaviator
      @cgaviator  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the explanation. I did however try to change the sun able to illuminate the hillside and it still appear void of detail.

    • @rakon8496
      @rakon8496 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You made me curious, i went for a round in the Mach Loop. Seems as the bing imagery itself containing these really dark shadows, yet the dark sides of the hills are not completely black and you can see some structure and height profile under it. Maybe this imagery has been taken at spring or autumn or at least too late at the evening when shadows are intense. Unfortunately the data from Bing is far from perfect and sometimes outdated, maybe that is something we have to live with to some degree as they don't have just one set of world maps, they are using up to 21 layers of different LOD's, several sets of maps with different resolution. Pretty sure in regions like the norwegion fjords you will find this more often. Hopefully these issues will be solved over time either through better maps or with artifical reforestation... 💙

    That was fab, a favourite part of the world for me for a myriad of reasons. I used to stay at a cottage above Llanbedr when it was active and I've stayed in some of the valleys that the USAF and RAF used for Afghanistan topography simulation. The Talyllyn lake with a Herc or two over flying low level is impressive too.
    One of my older friends served with the RA and did some courses on 25 pounders in the area on some old ranges - I forget the name (not sure if it was Tonfanau?) My grandad was also RA by the time of WWII (he was BEF fighting the Waffen SS). So my partner and I went to take a look by driving some of those hairy little roads (with signs warning you not to get out because of ancient unexploded ordinance (she was having kittens when I did).
    Whilst I was outside of the car, I heard a lone jet, a Tornado iirc. So I waved to see if he/she would see me and I'd get a wing waggle. My partner told me not to be so daft. I replied, if I was out and about in a Tornado, and saw a little red car half way up and mountain? I'd use it for target practice (hope above hope, remembering my dad's school teacher's son was a Mosquito pilot and would do little displays for the school when he could)😉😳😄🤞 And.....that's exactly what he/she did, mock strafing runs, 2-3 times, iirc. I was cracking up (I got an autogyro to do the similar once, I could also have a conversation with him as he was low, slow and open cockpit, both parties were laughing😄👍). Anyways, I waved at the Tornado on their last run and surprise, surprise he/she, returned and waggled the wings before leaving the area. Fantastic! My partner was gobsmacked🙄😄 I'm sure that was all outside of regs and procedure, but some opportunistic strafing runs surely was a good use of tax payers' money, we all did our bit for defence of the realm that day (if ever we are invaded by little red cars - as opposed to already having been invaded by the CCP🧐😳🙄) 😄😄👍✌️
    The only other thing that came close was the BoB Lancaster overflying our house, about 600'+/-, banking hard, sun glinting off of the glass - twice✌️👍😊

      @cgaviator  ปีที่แล้ว +1

The local teaching authority messed up my sitting physics so I couldn't get into the RAF (I'd have been happy flying a Herc through the ML😄👍), then motorcycles and booze were discovered so I lost incentive to join up.
      Re fly pasts etc, the Tornado driver obeyed all the air laws AFAICT😉😉God bless you too, I bet the recipients love that a good bit of PR for the RAF👍✌️😊

      Thanks for the great content! After flying with GA planes and airliners and trying to keep within real world civilian speed, altitude and noise restrictions in MSFS for the last year, this is… different. I would love some insight in how the rules of flying a military jet differs from civilian aviation. Why am I allowed to fly at 400 kts@250 feet over someones home? And where (or when) is this not permitted?

    • @cgaviator
      @cgaviator  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fantefut8231 there’s a difference to flying over 1 house vs flying over a populated area. Crews will, whenever possible, avoid houses, livestock etc. If it’s a cluster of houses or a village etc then crews will fly wide around them. I can’t give too much info as the training documents are not open source. But within those constraints, I’ll make sense of the planning documents.

    Cool to see the actual route, speeds and procedures from the air. Ive been sat on the section of cad west a few times this year exacly where you pointed it in, and been lucky enough to see both a 4 ship, and a 6 ship of lakenheaths f15s come right over, always exactly on that point.one of them even did a roll for me and passed directly over me at 500 knots. The noise they made screaming down towards the lake together is unbelievable, the valley itself shakes. Seen hawks through as well, but theyre so small and fast, unless you know exactly where to look for the approach from the car park theyre coming, there and gone in under 2 seconds

      You can enter from anywhere, but unless you’re flying south to north, it usual to enter from the north. This is probably due to pilots entering low level as soon as they’re feet dry over wales so they get as much training as possible. But if the weather is marginal, descending over the sea is best thus the route you take is an ok one.
