Whoever his apprentice/helper is I hope they appreciate how fortunate they are to be learning from someone like him. I'm a carpenter myself and ive worked for a variety of tradesmen- some skilled and some less so and a wide array of customers/ budgets and I can say from experience that attention to the details like Shoyan gives is rare no matter what the cost of a house is. It's clear he treats every project as a labor of love.
@@Spencer-e2v Ohh I think you're being a little hard on the Beav without giving enough credit where credit is due. I haven't met any number of great carpenters anywhere along the way. It's one thing to talk about this and that yet another to replicate from one to the next. I see time, temperance and experience.
My man builds entire houses as precicely as a master woodworker and countless levels above the standards of carpentry in my country. Aswel l- there are so many aspects to these houses and he does everything - from milling to finishing - i've never seen anything so considered and requiring this many skills in a tradesman. The way the timber is presented after finishing is just so beautiful. Everything about him screams master - from the speed/exactness of his work to the efficiency of being multiple steps ahead of the ball in his methods - for the small tasks and big picture. So glad this is documented - I think he will raise the standard for a lot of people who have been fortunate to find this channel. Much respect and best wishes for you and your family Shoyan-San from Australia
Amazingly good carpentry. If I could afford any style home to be built it would be Japanese style and I would want Shoyan to build it. This guy is an outstandingly good carpenter. Thank you for filming and sharing. Gods blessings to you. 🙏🏻
どうもありがとう--such skill, method, and such beautiful materials. I can only imagine what it must be like to live in one of those homes. Thank you for the videos.
Im a carpenter in UK. This amazing work makes me feel like a butcher. The detail in the sofit and facial is incredable. We just bang up plastic facial boards , sofits ect. This is everything about quality, the timber it self looks so well machined. The building sites I was on were usually a complete mess. WOW ! Thank you Soyan!
Once again your skills as a TRUE craftsman are displayed to their fullest extent Shoyan. It has been a while since I was able to watch another of your videos & realise just how much I have missed them. Again your explanations as to how & why you do things in order to achieve The very BEST result, are BRILLIANT. Absolutely beautiful job my friend. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
It remains amazing to me how nice the wood is. Shoyan doesn't need to closely look at his boards for cracks and warping like we do in America. I can see that he looks at them but the wood is trustworthy enough for a glance to suffice.
The precision you achieve with your work is mind boggling! I've watched the scene where you marked the mitres several times and I still can't figure out how you've been able to find the matching angles.
The pitch of the roof indicates over X length the roof falls Y height, this information is indicated or discoverable by the plans or by measuring with a level in the reverse of the below. By lining up the square ruler with the X on one ruler and the Y on the other ruler against an edge of the board that sets the angle of the straightedge where he can scribe a line. By matching the scribed lines on two faces of the board he is able to draw the compound angle for his blade to follow. This will work even if the two roof sections have a different pitch.
Shoyan uses a right-angled curved ruler. This is called a "sasigane," and with this tool, Japanese carpenters create Japanese architecture with a complex combination of verticals, horizontals, and angles. In addition, this tool can be used to measure the circumference of a log. It can be said that they use trigonometric functions, calculus, square roots, and so on. The art of using the "sasigane" is called "kikujutu," a wooden building tradition that dates back to the late 6th century.
Amazing to see you solve such compound angles! More fun than watching a piano being made. Appreciate your comments about difficult versus easier points in construction. Great sense of humor too! Wonderful series of videos, we are learning a lot. Thank you!
Shoyan, watching you work is mesmerizing! Absolutely superior craftsmanship. Great work with the editing and narration too. That is a lot of work. Side story: I worked on an acquaintances' home over a decade ago. The home owner was in the same profession as you. However, if you witnessed the level of 'craftsmanship' on that home, you'd wonder if the crew was brought in from a prison work release program. All the best from beautiful Vancouver, Canada!
Sensei Mr Shoyan, your work is timbermans dream.I would hire you any time build house to anybody.Detailing is stunning of your working methods.Good health and keep videoing. How much weather take part of wood expanding and shrinking.Thank You
Beautiful work as always, screws and plugs in the barge-boards no less! Odd that he nails through the soffit board grooves and not the tongue like I've always done... But fabulous work...
I guess blade has fine and course teeth on opposite faces. Wide blade prevents lateral flex and strong enough that does not need Reinforcement and can go through deep members.
There are these guys I watch on TH-cam. The channel is '''PERKINS BUILDING BROTHERS'''. I thought that with their crew of 6, they were awesome. BUT, between Mr. Shoyan-son and the Perkins boys, Mr Shoyan-son wins. Hands down! If someone that watches them and here, they will agree the carpentry style here is about an artistic build, where-as the aforementioned channel are about profit and views
I had 14 pitch like this it sucked it was panel soffit These USA guy grab a 4x4 for miter saw jack for the wood leg on table top. Saw should be 3.5" high my DeWalt is
Not that everybody does but I measure and cut to the 32nd (.8 mm) for stain grade exterior finish. Portland, Central Or and Wa. Japenese carpentry is on another level from plan through implementation. Art and poetry
This makes me wish I could afford to have Shoyan build me a house.
couldn't agree more

You build a house like most people build furniture. Very precise.
I wish we had this level of skill and commitment from carpenters in Australia.
🥳🥳 im a carpenter myself in norway.. Shoyan you are my carpenter hero.. building houses like a furniture… the best I ever saw

Furniture grade lumber and construction techniques for home 😂construction. Ain't no "rough" in that house carpenter's tool belt!
Even though it will be stained - Mr Shoyan still aranges the finishing boards by color - he's just the king of aiming for perfection

Very nice work. I like how the Japanese pay more attention to detail overall. With intent to do a solid job. 👍

i wish i could put a metal roof on a frame that good.
What hand saw is that at 1:17?
What is the purpose of wide saw like that. Prevent lateral bend (flex).
is this a high-end house or is this normal procedure for average homes? The quality of materials and installation suggests high-end.
That roller for his mitre saw is awesome. Does anyone know where i can buy one????
Those Nokiten looks absolutely fantastic, can't wait to see the whole elevation completed :)
This guy is ridiculously good ~ with his excellence and attention to detail, he puts ALL American carpenters to SHAME.
What's the horn or spike on your hammer for? Thank you.
So impressive!! I’m a carpenter in America, is this level of quality common for Japanese houses, or is this a high end house?
What brand of jeans do you wear? Can you give me a link to purchase online?

what brand of tools do you use?
Hitachi and Makita are what he usually uses from all of the videos that I saw.

For all Americans, when he says "centimeters" or "meters", that's a unit of measure like inches, ft, yards, miles, etc. You are welcome!
