    That bolt and bracket... Genius! Thank you. That was the only real concern I had. Personally, I would also add joist hangers on the rim joist. (Outer joist.) Those not only hold the joists vertically, but they add 'gription' to help keep the rim joist from separating from the ends of the floor joists. Those nails are good for vertical strength. (Shear.) But do noting to keep the rim joist from moving outward horizontally. And yes, it does happen.

    You need joist hangers on the outside rim joist. Also at min. Corner brackets to mount rim joist to posts

  • @MichaelChapmanNatchez
    @MichaelChapmanNatchez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The outside framing member that the floor joists tie into (opposite of the ledger board) is called a RIM JOIST or it can be called a BAND BOARD. Also was good to hear you correct yourself on the plural of joist: "joists" ... and not as you were calling them at first "joist-es." Lol. But all of this is nick-picking nonsense ... call them what you want to, because you are doing a fantastic job. Keep up the good work!!!

  • @TheVineyardFarmhouse
    @TheVineyardFarmhouse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You probably should put Joyce hangers on the Rim joist as well. Those are called concrete pylons... you remind me a lot of myself. I do things a little outside the box, from the way other people do but it usually turns out just as good or better. You’re doing a great job and I enjoy watching you and your families, videos.
    P.S. Put some black seal tape on the tops of your Joyce. It will protect them from water damage.

  • @craigs5212

    Nice job on the garage/rooms. Tip, before you place the decking add some metal Z flashing to cover the ledger board and extend up under the siding. You don't want water running behind the ledger board, it will rot the OSB and back of the ledger despite the house wrap, it just can't dry out. Another touch I saw the other day at my local lumber supplier was a self adhesive water proofing tape you place on top of the deck joists before adding the deck boards to keep the joists from rotting on the top edge. Cut strips of ice&water shield or window sealing tape would do the same.

    • @123Goldhunter11
      @123Goldhunter11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on. I'm redoing a stairs that wasn't flashed properly. Lasted for 30 years but I've had to replace a lot of osb and sister in some studs. And, of course, replace some cedar siding. OMG have you seen the price of cedar siding?

      @@fusi0nn Having no regulations or inspections thus "allowing" sub standard practices doesn't mean they are acceptable and should be undertaken. This is a quite high landing and it is only a matter of time before the nails loosen and the structure fails. Standards and "best practices" are the result of lessons learned from failures which have almost always resulted in injuries and often death. I most fervently hope Marty has installed hangers at the rim joist end of this landing so his family and visitors are spared unacceptable and quite frankly immoral risks for the sake of a few dollars of readily available and easy to install hardware.

  • @ModernMountainLiving

    In my Armchair world of OSHA and building codes we have to have diagonal bracing on porches (posts) OVER 10'. The stain on the deck looks great and I use grating for drains to replace a deck board where the snow falls off the roof so it goes right thru. Plans we don't need no stinking plans.

  • @MichaelNeal

    All your hardware at the house looks fine. Why no joist hangers on the outside band joist??? Oops!
    The big problem which creates most deck collapses is the post to deck connection.the post should have been notched to accommodate your deck joists! A ledger can never be replaced with mechanical connectors. Sorry Martin, you'll need to fix this.

    • @jamesp7623
      @jamesp7623 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can add 2x4 pt to the posts vertically ending under the header so it is supported. You can’t rely on hardware through the header and into the post.

  • @MatHelm
    @MatHelm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Unless you're using some sort of non shrinking (not pine) or old wood, don't space the boards with anything (like nails). They'll shrink more than enough, and with that spacing you'll end up with gaps wide enough for a chair leg to fall through.

    Hello Mr Johnson & Family, Think we would of did the same to Both Sides Bolted it to the wall then you don't have the board running along the back wall.. just think it would one look better and two think it would be stronger.. BUT What you Will Need / Should Add to Roof is SNOW GUARD'S lol( not yelling just wanted it to stand out in comment.) will keep Snow from Falling in to Steps or Someone walking down or up at the time of it falling.. And was cool in video that you did showed different thing's by walking out giving chickens water etc. just them couple of things made the video, a little touch of living on making a homestead.. So we Thank you all for your Time.. And we will be here for the next 1

    It is recommended to use joist hangers on the outside rim joist as well. Not sure of your local building code for freestanding deck pillars, most codes require 6x6 posts. You can use braced 4x4 as long as they don't exceed 10 feet height as 4x4 deck posts are notorious for twisting and racking. Recommend using cross or diagonal bracing on the corner 4x4s. It's better to be safe than sorry.

    Now "I" would have done it so-o-o much different! It would have cost so-o-o much more; there would have been many trips to the ER; there would be a slope in the flooring "toward" the house; there would be several "catawapuses(?)" to win the "Abstract Art Award" in Building AND it will fall down by days end. The board that holds up the floor joist is called "Board that holds up Floor Joists". ;-) Art in Calif.

    Concrete cylinders. Just a suggestion please put joist hangers on the opposite side from the ones on the ledger board. This will guarantee that one day down the road the joist's will stay in place on the house side and the outer edge. It will add extra stability too. I had a long talk with Safety Sally and we agreed it's not that much $$ to do this. LOLOL Wow looks really nice. Question when you move a couch or chair's/furniture in will the steps be wide enough and the door too to bring in furniture? God's blessings to you all. Everything is looking so good.

    you may want to put some cross-bracing on those long posts - it'll be a bit wobbly up there otherwise - looks good though -

    I hate to pull a safety sally on you but the potential for snow falling of the roof on to stairs creates a danger of being killed or hurt to anyone one the stairs. That is why stairs and doors are under roof over hangings. By the way are you going to install snow guards on your metal roof? Also are you going to bolt the ledger board to the wall?

    You may want to put 2 more anchor bolts to secure the landing to the structure

    If your plan is to do much more concrete a concrete hoe is much easier than a shovel.

    Did you know that you can use your speed square as a guide to aid in making a perfectly square saw cut?

    My self have NEVER had good experiences with treated wood. Better use decent regular timbers and dose it with a treatment of choose. Every pressure treated wood I've used ended up twisting and warped. NEVER worked for me. Copper sulfate keeps any critter out of wood. Worms or Rat vermin.

    Those stairs will be really nice once done. It looks like you’re doing a terrific job. All our best to you & your family. Is Sarah going to be home for Thanksgiving? I’m sure she’s doing well in Tennessee & there are lots of folks taking care of her there. Great school & area. God bless.

    Why don't you build the stairs on the inside, instead of outside?
